called for donation to police protective fund is this a scam??????? He said he was a policeman.

I was called and given this number as a contact number for the Police Protective Fund. They said that the IRS granted the Police Protective Fund 501 C 3 status. Is this a legitimate fund? The gentleman who called said that he was a member of the police department and they no longer used a telemarketer to collect the funds so that 100% went to the members of the families of the injured policemen.
