What It Means To Be An Artist In The Time Of Trump
Huffington Post - 3 months
Being an artist today means something very different than it did just two weeks ago. As the nation collectively struggles to come to terms with what a Donald Trump presidency means, we call upon artists as activists, optimists, truth-tellers and revolutionaries, to resist the normalization of hate and prejudice, to stand up for the communities that have been marginalized, and advocate for an America that serves all of its citizens.  Shortly after the election, we reached out to artists whose work we admire, asking their opinion on the role of an artist over the coming four years. Our questions were simple: What is your mission as an artist today and what is your advice to others in the field? The answers we received are full of the emotions many of us have been grappling with over the past week. Feelings of pain, anger, sadness, fear ― but also of hope, unity, compassion, motivation and strength. We have compiled the responses and artwork of 21 artists, ready and willing to acc ...

Sean O'Pry, World's Top-Earning Male Model, Makes WAY Less Than Female Models
Huffington Post - over 3 years
You may not know Sean O'Pry's name, but you've certainly seen his face. The good-looking guy has starred in campaigns for Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana and Ralph Lauren, and today, Forbes named him the world's top-earning male model. Yet O'Pry's bounty seems paltry when compared to his female competitors' share. Gisele Bündchen, who has nabbed the top female slot for seven years straight, earned $42 million in the 12-month period Forbes assessed, while O'Pry made a mere $1.2 million in the same time frame. Forbes speculates this disparity arose from women's dominance in the modeling world. Indeed, male models' experiences within the industry are discussed with far less frequency than their female competitors. Modeling, it seems, is the one field where the "glass ceiling" experience women face is flipped, and men struggle to be taken seriously. As former model Aaron Johnson told HuffPost blogger Jill Di Donato, "Anytime I would try to talk about my ideas or ambitions... I was tr ...

Kick-Ass 2 – first look review
Guardian (UK) - over 3 years
Hit Girl and Kick-Ass are back, Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman are not. Henry Barnes wonders if they took the laughs with them With hindsight Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass was a rare treat: a graphically violent, hysterically rude superhero film. The action comedy – about a dorky teen who re-models himself as the titular crime-fighter – tackled the blockbusting phoniness of most comic book adaptations head on. There was gore, there was death, there were swearwords. There was a starring role for a Chloë Grace Moretz's Hit Girl, an 11-year old assassin with a taste for blood and a knack for profanity. Honour and justice were bustled into the background. The pomposity of the classic superhero story was given a beating. Put bluntly, Hit Girl would have no problem squaring up to the Wolverine, the Man of Steel and the Avengers and calling them the c-word. Kick Ass 2 – handed to writer/director Jeff Wadlow by Vaughn and co-writer Jane Goldman – is significantly less confident and less braz ...

Liz Insogna: Hello Nasty
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Nasty by definition indicates something unpleasant, nauseating, repugnant to the mind, and/or morally bad. Nasty can also indicate something physically or mentally damaging or harmful. Nasty in reference or in association with art may be something else entirely. It may represent the element in your life that aims to incorporate a more difficult aspect of (experience, perspective, feeling) rather than repress it, open up and question rather than close up and shut down, sweep under the rug and stuff back down the throat. Nasty wants to have a conversation and it wants it now. It's the confrontation you don't want to have and the provocation you wished didn't get under your skin. It's the touch you can't take back. It's the dirty little secret your analyst has been uncovering for years. Sooner or later you're going to have to face it. Perhaps today's the day. Yet. To take nasty at face value is to be insensitive to other parts of experience it highlights in the process ...

Directing '50 Shades'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
LONDON — British visual artist and filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson has been signed to direct the movie version of erotic best-seller "Fifty Shades of Grey," producers have announced. Taylor-Johnson, whose only previous feature was the 2009 John Lennon biopic "Nowhere Boy," promised she would "honor the power" of the book, which has sold millions of copies and spawned countless imitators. The announcement was made Wednesday by Universal Pictures and Focus Features. Producer Michael De Luca said Taylor-Johnson's "unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director" for the story of the S&M-tinged romance between a young student and an enigmatic billionaire. "Fifty Shades" author E.L. James tweeted that she was "delighted and thrilled" by the choice. The 46-year-old director, previously known as Sam Taylor-Wood, is one of Britain's best-known visual artists. Her works include a ...

Aaron Johnson Is Your Latest Potential 'Godzilla' Leading Man
MTV News - about 4 years
By Hannah Soo Park After experiencing a bit of pre-production chaos (to say the least), "Godzilla" is dusting itself off and moving on…to its next potential leading man. Now that Joseph Gordon-Levitt definitely isn't going to play the lead role in Gareth Edwards' reboot, Legendary Pictures is looking to Aaron Johnson as its choice frontrunner for the job. Before Johnson and Gordon-Levitt, the studio also considered Henry Cavill, Scoot McNairy and Caleb Landry Jones. But it seems that Johnson is treading carefully—the "Kick-Ass" and "Savages" star is reportedly waiting to read Frank Darabont's re-written, polished script before signing his name on anything. Plot details are barely existent, but Warner Bros. and Legendary are supposedly planning to put a grittier spin on the classic Toho original. And aside from the whole giant-lizard-versus-buildings thing, it's been said that the film will feature more than one monster and a mysterious human soldier character, who we can ...

Huffington Post - over 4 years
Oliver Stone's Savages became available on DVD today with a Blu-ray combo pack that also includes UltraViolet, DVD and Digital copy. The film, based on Don Winslow's novel, is about two best friends (played by Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson) whose marijuana business attracts the attention of a Mexican Baja Cartel. When the boys refuse to work with the cartel, the girl they love -- played by Blake Lively -- is captured by the Mexican drug lords, which forces the two friends to play ball. Salma Hayek, John Travolta and Benicio Del Toro also star. The night before the presidential election, Stone and Del Toro sat down for an intimate dinner at the Four Season's Culina restaurant in Beverly Hills to talk about the film's DVD release, which also includes an unrated edition, a deleted scenes section and five-part 'Making Of' that is chock full of behind-the-scenes footage and cast interviews. The conversation veered all over the place. Both filmmaker and actor said they ...

Hit-Girl Has 'Completely Progressed' Since 'Kick-Ass,' Chloe Moretz Says
MTV News - over 4 years
Mindy McCready has come a long way since we last checked in on her. The pint-sized crime-fighter known as Hit-Girl is not quite as pint-sized anymore, for one thing; she's 16 years old now, a far cry from where she was when "Kick-Ass" first hit theaters in 2010. "It's a bit surreal," actress Chloe Moretz told MTV News at New York Comic Con about getting back into the "Kick-Ass" swing of things for the film's upcoming sequel. "It's like this weird time warp that happened. I went from being 15 to being, like, 13 again practically." One of the key questions for Hit-Girl this go around, according to Moretz, is how she should go about balancing her needs as a vigilante with her needs as a normal kid. "The character has completely progressed," she said. "She's now 15 or 16, figuring out who she is. Is Hit-Girl the mask? Is Mindy McCready the mask? That's the cool tug of war between the two minds." One thing that's not so cool for Moretz is that she won't be spending much sc ...

'Kick-Ass 2' Set Picture Teases A Gun-Filled Funeral
MTV News - over 4 years
Time to get out your nice black clothes, because we're going to be headed to a funeral in "Kick-Ass 2." Director Jeff Wadlow tweeted a picture from the set of the film that showed an open casket filled with guns. "What do you keep in your coffin?" he asked along with the image. Fans of the comic should recognize what scene this picture promises, but we won't give away what it entails for those of you who want to go in to "Kick-Ass 2" fresh. Without spoiling too much, just know that the funeral scene gets dark and violent, and is one of the most important scenes from the "Kick-Ass 2" comic. It's a major turning point for Kick-Ass as a character, and it also shows how unhinged The Motherf---er is as a villain. We caught up with Christopher Mintz-Plasse at Comic-Con and talked to him about the many violent scenes his character has. He said that all the brutality means the film will likely earn a very high MPAA rating. "If I'm playing my character, you know, [violence has] got ...

'Kick-Ass' Set Photos Show More Of Red Mist's Convenience Store Stick-Up
MTV News - over 4 years
With the rate at which "Kick-Ass 2" set photos are being leaked, we'll likely have seen the whole movie by the time it wraps production! Considering how long we've waited for this movie, though, we really aren't complaining. The latest images come from ComicBookMovie.com and introduce us to Lindy Booth's character, modestly named "Night B--ch." The image in question shows Booth at the same convenience store where we saw Christopher Mintz-Plasse go "shopping" the other day. As a few cast members can be seen in some of the behind-the-scenes images hanging out with fans, there's no guarantee that Night B--ch is actually involved in this scene. A cute photo shows Mintz-Plasse (in full costumed get-up) looking at a woman's iPad with an expression of happiness on his face. Booth can be seen looking on in the background. After all the build-up to the reveal of Olga Kurkulina as Mother Russia, we've seen quite a bit of her since. An image snapped at the convenience store shows her a ...

Could 'Anna Karenina' Win Keira Knightley An Oscar?
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Director Joe Wright and actress Keira Knightley have a successful working relationship, but will their third collaboration, "Anna Karenina," finally result in Oscar gold? The famed Russian tragedy follows Anna (Keira Knightley) as she falls in love with a cavalry soldier (Aaron Johnson), which is a problem since she's already married to a man 20 years her senior (Jude Law). "Anna Karenina" has been turned into a feature film countless times before, but this version is a bit different, as Wright ("Atonement") explains in the beginning of the clip. Wright aims to create a “fluid linearity” throughout the film, where actors can physically move from scene to scene. The film predominantly takes place in a dilapidated theater. "You can walk from one house, under the stage, straight off to the horse training ground and go through a door, and there's a Russian landscape," Wright explains in the clip. The six-minute film sequence begins with Anna entering a beautiful ballro ...

So Is The 'Kick-Ass' Sequel Happening Or Not?
Popeater - over 4 years
SAN DIEGO — Christopher Mintz-Plasse is spreading the word at Comic-Con that a sequel to "Kick-Ass" appears to be on the way. The co-star of the 2010 action comedy told a crowd at the San Diego fan convention Friday that "Kick-Ass 2" looks as though "it's going to happen." Mintz-Plasse says shooting might begin in September. The actor dropped the news during a panel to promote "ParaNorman," an animated horror comedy featuring the voices of Mintz-Plasse, Kodi Smith-McPhee and Anna Kendrick that opens in August. "The word's out," Mintz-Plasse said. "You heard it from me first, and I'm going to get my butt kicked." At the end of "Kick-Ass," Mintz-Plasse's wealthy young comic-book devotee was left on the verge of entering the super-villain business against the film's star, Aaron Johnson, who plays another youth gaining fame as a superhero.
