Edi Gathegi From The Blacklist Returns to Flash-Freeze Your Blood Again in Crackle's StartUp
Huffington Post - 6 months
In person, Edi Gathegi seems easy-going and charming. That wouldn't describe him in NBC's The Blacklist, where he played Cabal enforcer Matias Solomon last season, and starting Tuesday it won't describe him in StartUp, a Crackle web series in which he plays Haitian-American gang boss Ronald Dacey. Something in Gathegi's manner, or maybe mostly in his eyes, enables him to turn colder than the polar ice caps. He morphs into a very bad guy - not just one of the most menacing on television these days, but one of the most distinctive. Gathegi's fine with that. "I love playing villains," he says. "They're the most fun. When I read for these parts, I think maybe I do a better job than if it's for something lightweight." He adds, though, that not all villains are created equal. Matias Solomon on The Blacklist (above) is a ruthless cog in the criminal machine known as The Cabal, and accordingly, he shows no sign of human connections. "What's interesting about Mr ...

A Merry Chrismukkah to All: Embracing Interfaith Families
Huffington Post - about 1 year
My great-grandparents were Jewish, my grandparents were/are Jewish, my parents are Jewish, and I am proudly Jewish. I had my Bat Mitzvah, I went to graduate school to work in the Jewish community and I now work for Hillel, the center for Jewish life on college campuses. I've even had heated debates over which Fiddler on the Roof leading man would make a better mate, Motel or Perchik (my vote always lies with the latter), and yet I have a hidden secret--I grew up celebrating Christmas. And not just in the listening to Christmas music and watching Elf way (both of which I still do, without shame). Instead, every Christmas morning, my sisters and I piled in the minivan in our pajamas and my parents drove us to my grandparents' house. Inside we indulged in gingerbread, candy canes and many other Christmas delicacies. We had stockings with our names on them hanging from the fireplace and we even opened presents from Santa. As a young Jewish girl I remember questioning why it was that I k ...

The Festival of Lights in the Spotlight
Huffington Post - about 1 year
As someone who hates shopping, I boldly decided to initially tackle my holiday list at Bed, Bath & Beyond. In search of an aisle I could actually have room to walk in, what immediately caught my attention were the three large displays dressed in blue featuring a wide array of Hanukkah-themed merchandising. In addition to doll and book "The Mensch on a Bench," which was featured on ABC's "Shark Tank" a few seasons ago (and I am now the proud owner of), the products included gelt-filled dreidels; candles, napkins and tablecloths; menorahs; sizable decorations (including a white bear wearing a yarmulke); a tree topper; stockings and gingerbread kits. There were even Hanukkah-themed products for our four-legged friends. While maybe not the appropriate reaction, all I could think of was the slogan, "We've Come a Long Way, Baby." And I am not referring to the old Virginia Slims cigarette brand. Since when is Hanukkah so relevant? As a young child growing up in Flushing, Queens, ...

'The Mindy Project' vs. 'New Girl': Who Wins?
Huffington Post - about 3 years
Have you been watching the third season of "New Girl"? I have. I've been a loyal fan since it debuted in 2011. There was just something so endearing about Zooey Deschanel and her portrayal of Jessica Day (though I get why some would be annoyed by how absolutely precious she can be). I, however, simply thought she was a clumsy breath of fresh air. Fast-forward to now and I have been sorely disappointed, almost from Episode 1 of Season 3. I'm not sure why. Is it because Jess and Nick (Jake Johnson) are a couple? Nope. I love them together and the "I love you"/finger guns exchange on Sunday's post-Super Bowl episode only added to that. Is it because Coach is around but Damon Wayans Jr. is only considered a "Special Guest Star" and not a regular cast member? Maybe. Is it because there has been more Winston (Lamorne Morris) and not enough Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Schmidt and Cece (Hannah Simone)? Kinda-sorta. I'm always cool with more Winston, but I do miss the Schmidt/Cece romance a ...

Kristen Bell Talks About Her Onscreen Pregnant 'Threesomes'
Huffington Post - about 3 years
Is Kristen Bell getting wild and crazy? Not as much as you might think. During an appearance on "Conan," Bell discussed the sex scenes she shot with her onscreen boyfriend Adam Brody for their Showtime series "House of Lies." Bell was seven months pregnant with her daughter Lincoln during the filming, and she said that the bump, which was later edited out of the shots, often got in the way. "[He] affectionately refers to our sex scenes as our threesomes because my belly was just on top," Bell laughed. "And now I can forever look at my daughter and say, 'Oh, you were present for that!'" She discussed her often-sexual acting career on "Chelsea Lately" a few weeks earlier, telling Handler that she doesn't plan to hide her work from her daughter. "My guess is if she is like the other five billion people on the planet, she's going to grow up and enjoy sex," she said. "I'm not going to be shocked by that ... She has, newsflash, a vagina, and she's going to figure that out one day, ...

'Baggage Claim,' review: predictable comedy
San Francisco Chronicle - over 3 years
'Baggage Claim,' review: predictable comedy [...] Montana has some catching up to do in writer-director David E. Talbert's "Baggage Claim," a romantic comedy so light and brainless you almost expect it to float away. Based in the Washington, D.C., area, Montana happens to live across the hall from her best friend in high school, William, a handsome hunk who seems to have the perfect relationship with live-in girlfriend Taylor (a spunky Christina Milian). Montana enlists the help of her best friends, fellow flight attendants Gail (Jill Scott) and the stereotypically gay Sam (Adam Brody).
