When Tupac Goes To Church
Huffington Post - about 2 months
The late Tupac Amaru Shakur has experienced a recent resurgence in news coverage this year. On May 2, his mother, Afeni Shakur, died. Among Tupac’s most heralded compositions is his 1995 song “Dear Mama,” now enshrined in the United States Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry among works deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically important… in the United States.” The Library describes Tupac’s song as “a moving and eloquent homage to both the murdered rapper’s own mother and all mothers struggling to maintain a family in the face of addiction, poverty and societal indifference.” This month, Tupac’s massive contributions to music history resulted in his posthumously induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, only the sixth hip hop artist to be so honored. However, Tupac’s most recent foray into the news limelight was most unanticipated. During a Sri Lankan Christmas Carol service co-organized by the Archdiocese of Colombo, Tup ...

A Letter To Tupac Shakur, 20 Years Later
Huffington Post - 6 months
Tuesday, September 13, 2016 Dear Tupac: There is a lot I want to say to you, so much so that I do not know where to begin. There is rarely a day or week that I do not think about your life, and your death, since that fateful day on Friday, September 13, 1996. I have tried, at times, and with great failure, to block you out of my head, to ignore the people who've asked me mad questions about you, about the circumstances of your death. I've been utterly frustrated, even, when it felt, during these past twenty years, like my life, in some ways, and for whatever reasons, is at least partially linked to yours. Maybe I should simply start at the beginning. When I first heard of you, it was when your debut album, "2Pacalypse Now," had just been released. We were still in what we now call the Golden Era of hip-hop, when an incredible and diverse range of rap music was being produced, it felt, every single month, from one new artist or another. At the time, groups like N.W.A and ...

Former Black Panther Uses 'Bonus Years' To Make Art
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Fixers is a series from What's Working that profiles the people behind the most creative solutions to big problems.  Jamal Joseph was just 15 when he joined the Black Panthers, though he fudged that number to 16, reasoning that it was a more plausible age for an activist.  It was the famously incandescent year of 1968. On his first day at a Panthers meeting in New York, he met Afeni Shakur, future mother of Tupac.  He was overfull of nervous energy and promised the room, "I will kill a white dude right now!" A leader reached into bottom drawer of a desk, and Joseph's heart started pounding. He was handed... a stack of books. Joseph thought it was a test. "I thought you'd give me arms!" he cried. The Panther said, "Young brother, I just did." As Joseph remembers it, the man went on, "You just said you wanted to kill some white dudes. Let me ask you this: if the people being exploited and oppressed were white instead of black, if our situation were reversed, would that b ...

British Black Panther Exhibition; Showcasing Brixton's Unsung Historical Legacy
Huffington Post - over 3 years
When speaking of the Black Panther Party, this generally evokes images and stories of the black revolutionary socialist party based in America consisting of likes of Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, Angela Davis, George Jackson, Afeni Shakur and Eldrige Cleaver. Unbeknowst to most, there was a division of the Panthers that was based in Brixton, south west London formed to fight for equality and stand up against the racism during the late 1960's and early 1970's. To celebrate these freedom fighters, seldom celebrated for their contributions to our liberty, an exhibition presenting the legacy of the British Black Panther movement is currently taking place in Brixton at the Photofusion Gallery. The official preview took place last week which features current portraits of Panther members and archive photographs shot by Neil Kenlock, the official photographer of the movement. Curated by Organised Youth, a group of 13-25 year olds, in collaboration with Louder Than Words, who felt mov ...

Popeater - over 3 years
The late Tupac Shakur will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as announced by the Walk of Fame Committee. Tupac will make for the fourth rap star bestowed the honor. He is one of the best selling music artists in the world, and his All Eyez On Me double disc is one of the best selling hip-hop albums of all time. Shakur, known to the world as 2Pac, will be awarded the star for his illustrious recording career. Prior to his tragic murder in 1996, Pac had proven himself an accomplished poet, activist and actor. Ebony A. Utley, Ph.D.: Tupac Shakur, Jesus And Resurrection Power
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Jesus and Tupac had a lot in common. Their dramatic early years began with conception under non-normative circumstances. Mary's mysterious virginal conception could have led her community to accuse her of adultery. Afeni Shakur's decidedly non-virginal conception occurred while she was out on bail. Afeni was accused of planning to bomb New York City public spaces. Neither woman was guilty of the accusations raised against them, but scandal still surrounded their pregnancies. The stress of the accusations was augmented by the fact that Mary was traveling while pregnant, and Afeni was imprisoned while pregnant. Jesus was born into poverty in a manger in Bethlehem. Tupac was born into poverty in New York City. As poor minority babies, their families moved around a lot. Jesus' family fled to avoid the state-sanctioned oppression that was Herod's wrath. Herod wanted to kill Jesus simply because of who he was. Tupac's family moved in and out of shelters to avoid the state-sa ...

Four years since voicing the role of Gloria the Hippo in the sequel to Dreamworks' animated comedy "Madagascar," Jada Pinkett-Smith returns for the series' third installment, titled "Europe's Most Wanted." The film revisits the all-star cast of animated animals -- played by Pinkett-Smith, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and David Schwimmer -- as they attempt to navigate Europe, in the guise of a traveling circus, in an effort to return home to New York City. We recently caught up with the multitalented actress, who opened up on her latest role, producing the remake of "Annie," recording music with daughter Willow, and the idea of the Smith family starring together in a film. In preparing for the voice of Gloria, did you do anything differently [from the previous two films] for "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted"? Well it's kind of like putting on an old pair of slippers, like something you know already [Laughs]. It didn't take a lot of prepping. This is our third go-round, ...

Tupac Coachella Hologram Continues To Spur Debate
MTV News - almost 5 years
MTV News staff argue for and against the 'Pac-O-Gram on Wednesday's 'RapFix Live.' By MTV News Staff, with reporting by Sway Calloway Tupac's hologram at Coachella Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Not everyone is a 'Pac-O-Gram fan. When late rap legend Tupac Shakur was resurrected Sunday night on the Coachella stage as a hologram, music lovers everywhere took notice. Most applauded the effort, but there were those who felt uneasy watching a reimagined Tupac prance across the stage. MTV News senior writer James Montgomery was quite skeptical of the whole display. "Who wouldn't want to see Tupac or anyone on a tour? But just for me there were some things about it that kind of bothered me," he said when he appeared on Wednesday's "It didn't seem really right to me." From the beginning of the performance, Montgomery was rubbed the wrong way. "What the f--- is up, Coachella?" the optically enhanced Tupac image screamed before "Hail Mary" played from the stage speakers. ...

Could Tupac's 'hologram' go on tour?
KXLY - almost 5 years
The virtual version of Tupac Shakur might soon take the show on the road. According to the Wall Street Journal, the technology that made a 2-D illusion of the late rapper appear to perform at Coachella over the weekend created so much chatter that Coachella headliners Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg are reportedly planning to talk over the logistics of a tour. (And as it's a 2-D image and not 3-D, it's technically not a hologram, although it's been widely referred to as such.) One idea, the paper cites, is to do a smaller tour with just Dre, Snoop and virtual Pac, with another thought being to go big and include other hip-hop stars like Eminem, 50 Cent and Wiz Khalifa, who also performed during Dre and Snoop's Coachella set on Sunday. However, a rep for Dr. Dre tells CNN that any talk about a potential tour is "premature." Digital Domain Media Group created Pac's eerily accurate virtual image, and the company's chief creative officer explained to the WSJ that Pac's "performance" wa ...
