Huffington Post - over 1 year
The mere thought of a bowl haircut may bring up painful memories of at-home haircuts gone wrong. But this classic cut has evolved greatly since the days when actual cookware was used to achieve its bowl-like shape.  Fashion risk takers Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and Agyness Deyn have all put their own spin on the bowl cut, rocking bold hair colors and piece-y layers that are styled to show off their closely shaved napes. Marked by its heavy fringe, which typically falls just above the ears, this short hairstyle is a great way to show off your beautiful facial features and experiment with makeup looks.   Don't just take our word for it. Scroll through the images below to see why we're in support of a bowl cut comeback. Zoe Yates: Dr. Martens Fashionable Expansion
Huffington Post - over 3 years
In the early 1900's Benjamin Griggs and Septimus Jones set up a boot making partnership in Northamptonshire creating boots for factory workers and the military, but Dr. Martens as we know it today wasn't formed until much later. In the 1960's the then Chairmen of the company Bill Griggs licensed the famous air cushioned sole from a German inventor and the famous Dr. Marten 1460 boot was born. The now iconic boot was initially sold to factory workers and the military but was quickly adopted by early multi-cultural, ska-loving skinheads in the 1960's. The Who's Pete Townshend also famously wore the Dr. Martens boot live on stage. The boot continued to be popular throughout generations, 1970's punk, the 1980's scooter boys and my generation, the 1990's grunge style. Although the 90's were the years I was in my teens, I have to be honest, and say that grunge wasn't really a trend I followed personally but it was hugely popular with my friends and people of my age. In the ...

Paula Mangin: Miley Cyrus Copped My Look, But the Joke's on Her
Huffington Post - over 3 years
This is the newly renovated Miley Cyrus. As most of you may not know, as much as I loathe both she and her dad's music, I secretly love her recent punked-out style, even if it's all a marketing ploy. Miley's transformation into Agyness Deyn, (British fashion model and Dr. Marten's collaborator/muse). started with her trip to the Dr. Marten's Philadelphia store followed by a stop at the salon to chop, bleach and spike her hair. Even kids on the Dr. Marten's site were cringing at her co-opting a look with very authentic roots. Anyway, yesterday Jslow sent me the link to the above Miley photo courtesy of dlisted's semi-regular segment "What in the hell kind of GD outfit is this" which features a celebrity sporting something horrific followed by Michael K's hilariously off-color commentary. Ladies, if you do not know of this treasured place for dirt, bookmark it immediately. It might just be the funniest, best written blog in the world. The problem with this particul ...

Zoe Yates: Does Fashion Need Real Fur?
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
I grew up in the 90s surrounded by shell suits and jeans with Flintstones characters printed on the legs. I remember I had my favourite blue shell suit trousers with Adidas printed down the leg so large it went from my hip down to my feet. They were truly awful but, at the time, I loved them and wore them almost every day. As a 90s teenager that was easily influenced, I recall an anti-fur campaign entitled 'I would rather be naked than wear fur'. It featured a number of high profile models including Naomi Campbell. Upon researching the campaign further I vowed that I would never wear fur. Some of my girlfriends went a step further, refusing to wear leather shoes, use cosmetics that may contain animal products, or eat animal products of any kind. They lived on lentils and wore plastic alternative shoes to school. I can't remember now but, thinking back, they must have had some pretty sweaty feet! To this day I don't wear fur. Although I don't have anything against people w ...

Are Combat Boots Cool And Feminine, Or Just Downright Ugly?
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Recently we've spotted trendsetters like Miley Cyrus and Rumer Willis out and about wearing combat boots. The appearance of Doc Martens, which we haven't seen since the days of Courtney Love, Nirvana and all things '90s, has us wondering if grunge is on its way back. Grunge, a subgenre of alternative music marked by bands like Pearl Jam, had its heyday in Seattle in the 1990s and Marc Jacobs brought the trend to the fashionable set with his legendary 1992 collection for Perry Ellis which featured models like Naomi Campbell wearing thermals and skullcaps. Now we're seeing stylish gals like Jessica Alba wearing the stomp-worthy shoes and model Agyness Deyn has designed a pair of boots for Dr. Martens, while designers like Dries Van Noten marched flannels down their spring 2013 runways. So is it time to pull out our plaids and black nail polish and pluck out our eyebrows? Maybe we don't need to go that far. Perhaps these boot-scooting beauties are just seeking comfort and wea ...

The One Item Alexa Chung Spent All Her Money On
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Alexa Chung has been the fashion industry's "It" girl for some time now. If she's not garnering attention for her perfectly tousled locks, it's for her stylish collaborations or her unique fashion sense. Over the years Chung has become a style icon in her own right and garned the attention of everyone from Vogue to Madewell and now, French clothing brand Maje. We caught up with the discerning fashionista at the Maje event she was hosting (the Brit stunner was the muse to the brand for the F/W 2012 collection) and she had plenty to say on her original sense of style and her recent work with Maje founder & creative director Judith Milgrom. Alexa Chung and Maje seem like an inevitable match -- both have that innate effortlessly cool vibe. We talked to Chung as she sat curled up in a suite at the Hotel Americano where she explained that she was already a fan of the brand when Milgrom approached her. When asked why she decided to do the campaign her answer was straight-forw ...

Cat Power Wants To Cover Jay-Z
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Chan Marshall, the singer-songwriter who performs and records under the name Cat Power, feels your pain. I'm not sure she wants to, but she can't help it. Whether you're a crying fan who wants nothing more than a one-on-one with her after the show or a hungry kid whose parents can't put food on the table, your suffering is sending agonizing quivers up and down Marshall's ultra-sensitive antennae. That much became clear during my hour-plus conversation with Marshall, whose excellent new album, "Sun" (Matador Records), is out today. I planned to talk to her about our mutual musical obsession -- Bob Dylan -- and her recent breakup with the actor Giovanni Ribisi. (He ended their relationship in March and married the model Agyness Deyn two months later.) But Marshall, who was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1972 and had a childhood marked by poverty and serial relocations, steered the conversation again and again to the suffering of others: Katrina victims, teenage girls who are raped ...

Who Do We Care So Much About Miley's Hair?
Huffington Post - over 4 years
As the entire Twitternet has seen by now, Miley Cyrus got a haircut last night. The star happily chopped off her platinum blonde long bob into an edgy pixie cut reminiscent of model Agyness Deyn's. "Never felt more me in my whole life," she tweeted. So why did the news cause such a stir, leading "OMG Miley" to trend worldwide? Even on a night chock full of entertainment news -- the 2012 Olympics came to a close, the Spice Girls reunited on stage for a bombshell performance, and Jennifer Aniston said yes to Justin Theroux's proposal -- Miley's hair took center stage on Twitter. Reactions to her new platinum pixie were emotionally charged, to say the least. A few loyal fans loved the new look, but many of her young followers had only rude things to say. Negative and hurtful comments streamed in one after another, and eventually, Cyrus herself responded. "If you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all. My hair is attached to my head no one else's and ...

The Brit List: Five Great British Fashion Designers
BBC Blogs- America - over 4 years
Alexander McQueen show, Autumn Winter 2012, London Fashion Week (Rex Features via AP Images) London is widely regarded as one of the fashion capitals of the world, and with good reason. The UK has produced some of the world’s most influential designers and fashion trends. In honor of our Summer of London look at the UK’s best up-and-coming fashion figures, here are five enduring icons whose extraordinary contributions have helped change the face of British fashion. Mary Quant Welsh designer Mary Quant epitomized ’60s Mod fashion and revolutionized the industry by being one of the first to tap into the lucrative youth market. Younger consumers were yearning to break free from the stuffy, traditional looks of the ’40s and ’50s and seeking clothes that were cool, modern, and cutting edge. Quant’s mini-skirts and hot pants shocked older generations while her shift dresses and use of synthetic fabrics redefined British fashion. Vivienne Westwood This punk-rocker turned ...

Giovanni Ribisi Marries Agyness Deyn
Crown City News - over 4 years
Update:  Well, I knew at the time I was talking to Giovanni Ribisi in line at the Los Angeles County Registrar’s Office that it was a big deal that he was getting married there, on that day, but had no idea what a tidal wave that story would cause.   Practically every news outlet in the world ran the story, sending so many people to our website that it crashed for much of the day.  But now, the website’s back!  We’ve gotten some interesting responses about the story, including this blog entry from a fashion modren writer who is very conflicted about my writing style.  Then People.com said the story first appeared on Huffington Post, but Huffington Post clearly credits Crown City News for breaking the story, so maybe they just didn’t make it to that part of the story.  Updates are happening with the story now with confirmation from Deyn’s family and Ribisi’s reps that my ears did not deceive me that day.   Just hope the couple was able to enjoy some time together on some sort of hon ...
