Design, art are in genes of owner of Anyon Atelier
San Francisco Chronicle - about 3 years
There's no doubt that Lindsay Brier, founder of Anyon Interior Design and the newly opened adjacent retail space Anyon Atelier, was bound for a career as a decorator. Brier, a mother of two who studied architecture and art at Dartmouth College, initially opened her design firm Anyon (her middle name and a family name) in 2007 following a stint in event planning and experience working in-house with Jackson Square art and antiques firm Foster-Gwin. Stocked with one-of-a-kind vintage items - hand-printed pillows, design books and artwork and photography by designers in New York, Los Angeles and beyond - the store is thoughtfully designed with a fresh, clean-lined California vibe with a blend of new and antique pieces. Alpaca throws made from the fibers of family-farm-raised Suri alpacas by New York's Alicia Adams Inc. (from $325); ceramic serving bowls (from $120) and soy wax candles in ceramic tumblers ($36-$42) by Alex Marshall Studios of Corning (Tehama County); first-edition rectan ...

Plebgate damaged trust in police, says head of policing body
Guardian (UK) - over 3 years
IPCC should have investigated Andrew Mitchell scandal sooner, says College of Policing chief, as MPs recall two officers The police watchdog should have looked into all aspects of the Andrew Mitchell Plebgate scandal from the start rather than allowing forces to investigate themeselves, the head of the College of Policing has said, as two officers are hauled back in front of MPs. Alex Marshall, who is responsible for a new police code of ethics, welcomed the news that there would be a full investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, but said it should have happened earlier. He spoke as Keith Vaz, the chairman of the home affairs select committee, accused several officers of misleading parliament over their account of a meeting with Mitchell at the height of the furore. Mitchell stepped down as Conservative chief whip last year after he was alleged to have called officers "fucking plebs" at the gates of Downing Street. He has always claimed to have been "stitche ...

Mary Manning Cleveland: It Takes Government to Create Markets: Alex Marshall's The Surprising Design of Market Economies
Huffington Post - over 3 years
When the U.S. Army blasted into Baghdad in 2003, expelling Saddam's Baathist regime, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld expected "free markets" to pop up all over. Instead, he got looting, murder, and chaos. So much for the neocon myth that markets are "natural," requiring only the absence of "government interference." In The Surprising Design of Market Economies, urban journalist Alex Marshall shows how in fact it always takes government -- even bad government -- to create and maintain markets. The idealized "free market" we meet in Ec. 1, with its large numbers of well-informed competing buyers and sellers -- that kind of market would not exist without intensive government support and regulation. I provided an example in my post on Public Meat Markets in Old New York. From the earliest times, government -- at first perhaps just the local warlord -- has at least provided a safe physical space for trade. Before 2000 BC, Chinese, Egyptian, and Babylonian governments not ...

Borders win first match in Hamilton Trophy series
Berwick Advertiser - almost 5 years
The Hamilton Trophy series reached the third week with no success for the Borders so far. On Saturday, May 26 they faced East Lothian at Tranent knowing they faced a very difficult task having rarely beaten East Lothian before. In the last couple of years however results had been good against them and therefore a good result was not impossible. The green proved to be quite quick and rather tricky with bowls played on the wrong line being severely punished. It was the Borders team which settled quickly and with five ends completed they were 10 shots ahead with three rinks up and three rinks down. East Lothian came back to demolish the lead but the Borders pulled away again and after ten ends they still led by five shots. The match continued in the same way but the Borders were mostly keeping ahead albeit with just a slender lead. Even at eighteen ends the difference was just six shots and the result might go either way, however, the Borders kept focused and in the end they gained a ...

Changes to police air support a step closer
The News - almost 5 years
COST-CUTTING plans to change police air support services could be brought forward, according to Hampshire’s top policeman. Chief Constable Alex Marshall, who is leading proposals for a National Police Air Service, said the project could be rolled out in the south east from October instead of July next year. Mr Marshall said: ‘It will be phased in from this autumn through to early 2014 when the last force is joining. ‘At the moment 97 per cent of the population of England and Wales are within 20 minutes coverage of air support. ‘Under my proposed model 98 per cent of the population will be within 20 minutes at a 20 per cent annual reduction in costs.’ The move – backed by Hampshire Police Authority – would save the force an extra £165,000 by April 2013. Hampshire is currently served by helicopters at RAF Odiham near Hook and Shoreham in West Sussex following a merger of air support with Surrey and Sussex in October 2010 to save cash. Under the National Police Air Service one he ...
