The Portland Mercury - over 3 years
Surprising no one, Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing is a ton of fun. by Alison Hallett "CROISSANTS. MOSTLY CROISSANTS. And eggs benedict." Actor Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly) is describing the spread at Joss Whedon's legendary "Shakespeare brunches," semi-regular LA affairs where Whedon convenes his friends—actors and non-actors, writers and directors—to eat and drink and read aloud their way through Shakespeare's plays. "We would simply sip mimosas and have a lot of laughs," Fillion recounted in a phone interview. "And Joss kept saying, 'I'm going to film one of these,' and like an idiot I thought he meant film us reading it. But that is not what he meant." What Whedon meant was the new movie Much Ado About Nothing, a black-and-white, self-produced affair filmed over 12 days in Whedon's own home. "This was Joss' two-week vacation," Fillion said of the tight filming schedule. "He was filming The Avengers and he had to g ...

Jill Knapp: Charisma Carpenter Talks The Lying Game, Charity Work and Surviving Evil
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Charisma Carpenter is very busy these days, and I had the opportunity to sit down with the actress on her recent trip to NYC. Best known for playing Cordelia Chase on Buffy The Vampire Slayer (the role she tells me was her favorite to play!), Charisma talked openly about her charity involvement, past and present projects, and what's next for her. Fans will be happy to hear that she still keeps in touch with a few friends from her Buffy/ Angel days, including actress Julie Benz, Alyson Hannigan and her husband Alexis Denisof (both on CBS' How I Met Your Mother). More recently, Carpenter has gained more fans and recognition for playing Rebecca Sewell on ABC Family's The Lying Game. Although there is still no word on whether or not show will be renewed for another season, the fans (myself included) remain hopeful. I think what I enjoy the most is... from an actress' point of view... the challenge of keeping her grounded and not becoming over-the-top, diabolical, or mak ...

Alyson Hannigan Gets Restraining Order Against Man Who Allegedly Threatened To Kill Her
Huffington Post - about 4 years
LOS ANGELES — A judge Wednesday granted Alyson Hannigan a temporary restraining order from a man who she claims has repeatedly threatened her and her family in online postings. The order requires John Hobbs, 43, to stay away from the "How I Met Your Mother" actress and her family, and it orders him to stop posting messages about her online. Hannigan states in her petition that in the past two months, Hobbs, a New Hampshire resident, has "posted a barrage of threatening messages directed at me and my family on various websites." The actress wrote that she has never met Hobbs, but his messages have suggested he will rape her and take her to the "after-life." Hobbs recently was released from a mental hospital, according to the court filings. "I am in severe fear for my safety and the safety of my family," she wrote. Police in Hobbs' hometown of Nashua, N.H., contacted him and he acknowledged wanting to meet Hannigan, 38, and visit her in California. "Hobb ...

Joss Whedon's 'Much Ado' Gets June 2013 Release Date
MTV News - about 4 years
by Hannah Soo Park If you’re expecting Josh Whedon’s next project to be a spectacle like "The Avengers" or "The Cabin in the Woods,” you might be a little surprised to learn that the writer-director’s upcoming movie is actually a seemingly subdued modern-day take on Shakespeare’s comedy “Much Ado About Nothing.” And now, the indie Shakespeare adaptation has an official release date. Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions announced that the film, which premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, will land in theaters on June 7, 2013. It may have a script derived from Shakespeare’s original text, but don’t expect stuffy period costumes—this interpretation features a contemporary spin on the classic tale (it is Whedon, after all). With his wife in the producer’s chair, the writer-director shot the film at his Santa Monica home during his free time off from filming "The Avengers." And get this: the cast includes a handful of Whedon-alums, including Amy Acker, Alex ...

Joss Whedon's Passion Project: A Shakespeare Adaptation
Huffington Post - over 4 years
TORONTO — Joss Whedon figures if Shakespeare were alive today, he might be writing superhero stories. Only better ones than Whedon and his colleagues are doing. Whedon, the writer-director behind this summer's superhero sensation "The Avengers," has unveiled a passion project at the Toronto International Film Festival – his adaptation of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." Considering the fantastic worlds of ghosts, sorcerers and witches of Shakespeare's works, Whedon said the playwright might feel right at home working in a superhero realm such as the Marvel Comics universe of "The Avengers." "Yeah, I think he very well might. He'd be doing it better than the rest of us. But he was not afraid of the big themes and the bigger-than-life characters," Whedon said in an interview at Toronto, where his "Much Ado" premiered over the weekend. "And his stuff was full of pop-culture references. I'm not comparing myself to him, but I am saying, yeah, I think he would ...

Festival co-director Cameron Bailey said "Looper" works on "both the action level and the ideas level," making it an ideal choice for festival audiences wanting something smart and entertaining.
