Casting Roundup: Leonardo Dicaprio Becomes President, Kelsey Grammer Becomes Expendable
Bleeding Cool - over 3 years
Leonardo Dicaprio still dreams of Oscar, Aaron Eckhart gives exorcism a shot and Kelsey Grammer is the latest Expendable in today’s roundup. • Remember how loose canon, crazy-eyed Nicolas Cage was courted for The Expendables 3? Well, he passed and we get Frasier Crane instead. Kelsey Grammer is taking the role once earmarked for Cage, that of an ally of the aging action stars crew consisting of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Terry Crews, Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Wesley Snipes. The source claims Grammer has a new tough guy image thanks to his series Boss and an upcoming villain role in Transformers: Age of Extinction, but personally I will never get this out of my head. [Deadline] • Hot on the heels of another success at the box office, horror power player Blumhouse has lined up their next project, Incarnate, set to star Aaron Eckhart. Eckhart will play an unconventional exorcist who can tap into the subconsc ...

Peter Foster: Occupy Elysium
Financial Post - over 3 years
FP Comment at the Movies Elysium is a psychological mystery. That’s not the movie’s classification; it is essentially a sci-fi shoot-em-up. The mystery is why anybody could imagine that this piece of agitprop, which features all the economic sophistication of the Occupy movement, and looks at times like a 110-minute ad for Obamacare, represents profound social commentary. Its director, the South African-born, Vancouver-based Neill Blomkamp, rose to stardom with the weird and wonderful District 9. Mr. Blomkamp declared that, for his second big feature, he wanted to separate himself from Hollywood thinking, “because there is some sort of strange fishbowl effect of cross-pollinating ideas coming out of L.A. that’s a bit tiresome.” So, backed by more than $100-million from Sony Pictures, he came up with a film based on environmental apocalypse and bashing the rich, complete with an evil corporation. Now there’s going out on an artistic limb! It’s 2154. Earth is wracked by pollution ...

Jonathan Kim: ReThink Review: Elysium - The 1% in Orbit
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Neill Blomkamp's latest sociopolitical sci-fi masterpiece, Elysium, is being called dystopian for portraying a world in the year 2154 where the ultra wealthy have abandoned an earth wracked by poverty, disease, crime, and pollution to live in the ultimate gated community aboard an orbiting space station. But if you read the news -- which is full of stories about impending environmental catastrophe, the widening gap between the rich and the poor, and a republican party obsessed with lionizing the wealthy and making those in need suffer -- Elysium seems more predictive than pessimistic. After all, the 1 percent already live in a world so different from ours -- where they can flaunt the law, enjoy the best in medical care, and be untouched by the planet's problems, concerns, and priorities -- that they might as well be on another planet. However, making on observation like that appears to be too much for the small minds of many, like republicans who have been quick to denounc ...

55 years later, 'On the Road' is finally a movie
Blue Ridge Now - almost 5 years
CANNES, France (AP) — Fifty-five years after its publication, Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" is finally burning on the big screen. Everyone from Marlon Brando to Jean-Luc Godard to Brad Pitt has circled the classic 1957 novel over the last six decades, but Walter Salles' adaptation is the first to actually get made. The wait isn't for lack of desire: Kerouac passionately wanted to see his book made a film, even writing Brando a letter promising that he could turn the book's lyrical road trips into a "movie-type structure." "On the Road" premiered Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival, far away from the American roads crisscrossed by Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, the characters modeled on Kerouac and Neal Cassady, respectively. "Unless you revive it by rereading it, re-imagining it, performing it, it's a dead thing," said Viggo Mortensen, who plays the William S. Burroughs character in the film. "You have to reread it to make it live again." The pun is inevitable: It has been a ...

Yesterday it was Kirsten Dunst’s turn, today it’s Sam Riley’s. Confused? Don’t be. We’re talking about the continued roll-out of “character” posters for the film On The Road, the forthcoming big screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s classic novel of the same name. First up was a poster for Viggo Mortensen who plays Old Bull Lee, aka William Burroughs. Then came posters for Elisabeth Moss, Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge and Alice Braga.
