Proposal To Ban People From Buying Guns During Divorce Gets Pushback
Huffington Post - about 1 year
WASHINGTON -- The Georgia lawmaker behind a controversial new bill to ban people going through divorce proceedings in the state from buying guns has responded to pushback by adding language to more narrowly target people with a history of domestic abuse.  The original measure would have made it a misdemeanor for anyone involved in a divorce proceeding to purchase a gun, unless he or she had permission from the judge overseeing the case. The bill wouldn't affect the possession of any guns the couple may have owned previously. State Sen. Michael Rhett (D-Marietta), who introduced the bill earlier this month, told The Huffington Post on Wednesday that because of "some pushback and the need for bipartisan support," he has decided to include language adding that a person going through a divorce proceeding would be banned from purchasing a gun if a protective order is taken out against him or her, or if there is a history of domestic violence. He did not immediately respond to a requ ...

The Impact of the Eddie Adams Workshop - 20 Years Later
Chicago Times - over 3 years
If the workshop staff didn't receive a mug shot from a student, their face was replaced with that of a preschooler...(clip courtesy of Robert Seale)      "Twenty years, GAH! Has it been that long?"  That was the general response after I sent out emails to students who attended the Eddie Adams Workshop with me exactly 20 years ago. I hear ya!     Some time ago In my basement I found a student list from Barnstorm VI and realized this would be a good time to find out what kind of impact the Eddie Adams Workshop had on its students, both professionally and personally. The next workshop, the 26th workshop, begins on October 11th. To their credit, the volunteers and staff pull off what I believe one of the most amazing workshops, every year.   It took some time to research and track down emails for students. I had everyone's name and hometown, but that was about it. I ended up looking at the Whois information on certain websites, and sleuthing through social media. I wasn't ...

ARTINFO: 20 Art Destinations Within Hours of the City
Huffington Post - over 3 years
The dog days of summer have arrived in New York City, which means one thing: It's time to get out. To help with this end, our staff has put together our own idiosyncratic list of day trip destinations for the art lover. Some are obvious, some more obscure. All of them you can do in a day, and though we've calculated the driving distance (all times are calculated from Manhattan, and minus traffic), we of course recommend taking public transportation when you can, for the most aesthetically pleasing experience. Enjoy! Illustration by ARTINFO 1. Mana Contemporary Jersey City, New Jersey 24 minutes by car Just across the river from Manhattan, Mana Contemporary is a sprawling -- and still growing -- 1.8 million-square-foot art center. Summer highlights in the converted warehouse include the largest exhibition in the United States of works by Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki and a video installation of works by Palestinian women living in Israel. As part of its miss ...

New Providence Business and PTA Leaders Meet
Berkeley Heights Patch - almost 5 years
Leaders from New Providence PTA organizations and local business owners met on April 18 to discuss how they can partner together to help the community. Businesses have long been supporters of school events, fundraisers, and programs, and students and their families are patrons of local businesses, so strengthening the relationship between the two groups makes sense.  “We wanted to make it easier for school groups to get support for their events,” said Michelle Brugger, President of the New Providence Business Association and owner of Martial Arts for Life.  “By establishing personal relationships with each other, it makes it easier for them to call us when they have an event or program that needs support.  Rather than going from store to store, they can make one call, and we can marshal our resources to help them.  At the same time, we can contact them when we have programs or events in town that benefit students and their families.” The two organizations agreed to sh ...
