From One Bully to Another: An Open Letter to Rebecca Sedwick's Bullies
Huffington Post - over 3 years
For the past week, the two of you have been heavy on my mind and the subject of my conversations with my two young daughters, who are nine and seven years old. They know how much I believe in the goodness of all people, and that I do not feel there is such a thing as a bad person, just bad choices. I can't help but wonder if all of this has sunken in yet and if you understand the magnitude of your choices over the last year of your life. Whether you're ready for this scrutiny or not, whether your parents deny your involvement or not, one thing is certain: The world is watching and waiting for you to pay a price for the loss of an innocent life. That is the society in which we live. Someone needs to be held accountable. And, if you've done the things that you are being charged with doing, make no mistake, no matter what you're reasoning was for doing it, it was wrong. Wouldn't you feel the same way if Rebecca was your sister or best friend? You're about to feel what Rebecca felt ea ...

Amy Weber: Are the Bus Bullies Monsters?
The Huffington Post - USA - over 4 years
If you haven't viewed the disturbing video of bus monitor Karen Klein being mercilessly bullied by a group of middle schoolers, be prepared to be affected. I wanted to immediately jump through my computer screen to shield this woman from the malicious attacks and embrace her in a loving hug. Needless to say, I was very upset. Not just because I watched this sweet, innocent grandmother become the target of hatred, cruelty and prejudice, but because the kids behind the bullying would now become targets themselves, monsters in the eyes of many. It is human nature to want to protect the victim and persecute the perpetrator, especially when abuse is witnessed firsthand: "Punish the punisher and give them a taste of their own medicine. Send them away. Make them pay." In the short number of days since the Karen Klein story broke, several of the 13-year-old boys involved have received death threats, thousands of calls and threatening text messages, and are under police pro ...

Lesbian Birmingham Filmmaker to Create Anti-Bullying Film
Birmingham Patch - almost 5 years
Bullying. It's a hot topic, it's seemingly everywhere, and it's the focus of award-winning Birmingham filmmaker and lesbian mom Amy Weber's upcoming film, The Bully Chronicles. "In light of the past events with Mayor Daniels, as well as for kids across this country struggling each and every day, I have decided to move forward with a project that is very personal to me – The Bully Chronicles, a movement toward change in the form of a narrative feature film shot in an unscripted documentary style," Weber wrote in an email to Patch. In December, Weber and her wife Tina stood up with their two young daughters to publicly comment on Daniels' Facebook post at a Troy City Council meeting just days after the mayor's anti-gay Facebook status surfaced (see the attached YouTube video). Weber, who was named 2011 Michigan Filmmaker of the Year for her film Annabelle and Bear, is creator and producer of The Bully Chronicles, which tells the story of teenage bullying from the bully's ...

Celebrating and promoting volunteerism across the region, 500 people packed the Rye Town Hilton's ballroom this morning for The Volunteer Center of United Way's 32nd annual Volunteer Spirit Awards Breakfast. Seven people and one organization were honored for their work: Jake Gallin, Peter McCartt, Cynthia Odell, Pat Rosafort, Nicole Sheindlin and Lou Thomason; and the Neighbors Link High School ESL Volunteer Tutors Group. Volunteer Center Executive Director Alisa Keston told the audience that New York is "dead last" among the United States in volunteering—a state of affairs a task force plans to remedy with a goal of enlisting 1 million volunteers for community service in New York by 2014. The Volunteer Center, which now matches volunteers to opportunities in Putnam and Westchester counties, will expand to cover the mid-Hudson Valley—starting this year by adding Rockland County.  Among audience members the focus was on youthful volunteers.
