The Pitti Uomo 91 Diaries: Stefano Ricci, Concept Korea, and Photos from the Fashion Front Lines
Huffington Post - about 1 month
As soon as I met British war photographer Guy Martin, my view of fashion here at Pitti Uomo changed. There is something incredibly powerful, a spark alive in those who report from the front lines, and combined with the natural kindness photographers possess, Martin immediately dissolved all my natural defenses. Not to mention that when I started to see the menswear fashion arena through his eyes, I realized that it too is a war zone of sorts, a battle for who can make the world more stylish, and conquer the most fashionista hearts. More on Martin a bit later, but first things first. Starting from the kickoff show of the day for me, the Concept Korea event. Concept Korea: Bmuet(te) and Ordinary People, and kimchi wings. As soon as the Bmuet(te) men, and women, started to walk down the worn-out cobblestones runway of the Dogana in Florence, I felt like Neo had found his Darcy-like counterpart, in a next installment of the Matrix set in Victorian England. I loved the black t ...

The Dubai Film Festival Diaries: A Classy End To A Life-Changing Event
Huffington Post - 2 months
OK, I'll just preface this by saying that were the majority of film reviews written by women, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story would never have been made. I'm probably a Star Trek girl through and through because I like a little reflection to go along with my entertainment. Not a whole lot of references to things I know nothing about nor want to particularly find out. But more on the film that closed this year's Dubai International Film Festival later in the blog. The reason that DIFF exists and just celebrated its glorious thirteenth edition is primarily to showcase and support the ever-growing Arab cinema industry. Yet we all know that a festival without international stars, great world premieres and exclusive parties would not be on anyone's radar for very long. And this year, DIFF brought to Dubai Hollywood royalty like Andie MacDowell and Samuel L. Jackson, HBO's Westworld stars Jeffrey Wright and Luke Hemsworth, filmmaker extraordinaire Asif Kapadia, world-class composer Gabriel Y ...

Susan Sarandon On Why She's 'Looking Forward To Being Older'
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Susan Sarandon says she was told her career would die out about three decades ago. But today -- at 69 -- she's got plenty of work lined up as well as a new role as a brand ambassador for skincare giant L'Oreal.  "I was told my career would be all over at 40," Sarandon told Vogue. "So I have been very lucky to have worked all these years."   Today, Sarandon joins other post-50 beauties, including Diane Keaton and Andie MacDowell, as a L'Oreal spokesmodel. The actress, who turns 70 later this year, said she was "surprised" and "flattered" to be asked to join L'Oreal's campaign. Though the company offers a number of anti-aging products, Sarandon says she's welcoming aging with open arms.  "I look forward to being older," she said in a statement. "When what you look like becomes less and less an issue, and what you are is the point." Recently, RYOT and The Huffington Post teamed up to present "The Crossing," an immersive reporting series hosted by Sarandon chronicling ...

Women Dating After 50: Are We In A No-Man's Land?
Huffington Post - almost 2 years
I received this email on my site from a reader asking for advice about women dating in their 50s: I am approaching 50, and just over one year separated from my husband. As I look forward and begin to think about the possibility of future relationships, I can see that dating over 50 might be difficult. What I notice is that I don't seem to hear many happy stories about people (like me) who were married 20 to 25 years, got divorced, and then found happiness/marriage, etc again. It seems to me that a 50ish woman is somewhere in no-man's land for a future relationship. I may be generalizing but do you see the same thing? As I also approach 50, I agree with her no-man's land comment in many ways. Fifty isn't really young, but it's not old either. I have had some issues while shopping for clothes in recent years, because all the clothing out there either seems too young or too old for me. I feel like some young people treat me older, which seems odd. I meet people in their 50s, who ...

Snowbound in the Big Apple? Try a Bite of Your Favorite Warren Beatty Flicks
Huffington Post - about 2 years
Snowbound in the Big Apple? Try a bite of your favorite Warren Beatty flicks. Get out your DVD collection or surf Netflix. Here are mine. Agree or disagree. What are yours? Reds (1981). An epic three-hour drama with intermissions. Music by Stephen Sondheim. Shows why communism/socialism never caught on in the USA. As someone who majored in Political Science and minored in Drama at Dartmouth and Vassar, it's not only the politics of the film but the drama that intrigues. It has the most romantic close-up of a kiss/embrace ever between Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton. That embrace graces the movie poster, but it is even better on screen. Beatty won the Academy Award for Best Director. A surprise Henry Miller cameo appearance, the author most known for his once banned book, Tropic of Cancer , discusses artistic freedom as himself, a witness. Splendor in the Grass (1961). Directed by Elia Kazan. A film for parents, grandparents, teens. Beatty makes his film debut opposite ...

7 Romantic Films Men Love
Huffington Post - about 3 years
Want to watch a movie with your man on Valentine's Day? "But men don't like romance movies," say many women. Think again. They just have to be the right kind. Common threads of a romantic movie a man will watch: The screenplay is written by men, the film is told from the man's perspective and the male lead behaves like a man would in real life and the ending of the film is redemptive. The male lead learns a valuable lesson from the experience. We men relate to these characters and stories. Here are seven. CASABLANCA: Plot: Rick (Humphrey Bogart), an owner of a trendy, upscale bar during World War II, turns cynical after being burned by his first love, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman). While sneaking heroes and patriots out of occupied territories, his love for Ilsa takes a new form. Why men like it: Choosing your comrades, your country and the survival of the entire world instead of the girl who left you... that's a man's man. A hero. Man Moment #1: When Ilsa pulls out that pistol. Why th ...
