Jane Austen: Brown Butter Bread Pudding Tarts
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Originally posted on Paper & Salt: Even when you love to cook, there are those times when it would be nice to have just a little help: when you promised to make something for the office potluck but forgot to go shopping; when that dinner party you're hosting sneaks up on you; when your in-laws you dearly want to impress are in town and all you have in the pantry are the three jars of peanut butter you bought before Hurricane Sandy. Wouldn't it be easier to live in Jane Austen's world, where you could hand off such tasks to a very capable cook? Remember poor Mr. Collins in Pride and Prejudice, who, when asking which of the Bennets had prepared the meal, "was set right by Mrs. Bennet, who assured him with some asperity... that her daughters had nothing to do in the kitchen." Like Elizabeth Bennet, Austen wouldn't be caught dead with a roasting pan--but she did know her way around one. After all, she wrote her novels in the middle of the drawing room, constantly interrupted b ...

Rice rattles into finals
Birdlington Free Pass - over 3 years
Hot favourite Steve Rice qualified for The YDP Pro-am Grand Finals, which will take place at the Huntington WMC in York this autumn. Twenty-five locals attended the qualifying event, which was held at The Greyhound, and they all had aspirations of making the grand finals. The finals will feature eight top BDO Professionials. Rice didn’t drop a single leg all night, as he cruised to victory once again. His performances included two 21-dart legs, one 19-dart leg and a 14-dart leg. He also attacked the trebles, hitting several maximum scores of 180 and a174. Rice, known as The Rattler hammered poor Andy Senior in their quarter final battle, and he went on to defeat Stuart Inglis 2-0 in the semi finals, after Inglis had hit two bullseyes to win the off. Darren Boyd (Bridlington) also kept a clean sheet en route to the final, beating Chris Brooker in the last eight, and Howard Berridge in the semi finals. In the earlier round, Inglis fired in a 15-dart leg and pulled out a ...

Leeds United v Cardiff City: Criminal error ends in smash-and-grab
Yorkshire Evening Post - about 4 years
When the final reckoning arrives this season, the comparison between the league positions of Cardiff City and Leeds United will be seen in terms of money spent. In some respects, rightly so. But Cardiff’s victory at Elland Road on Saturday deserved a different context. The decisive goal came from a striker who cost £650,000 last month – more than Leeds invested in their clutch of January signings – but the Welsh club were not guilty of buying their win. It was sold to them by an error which showed Sam Byram to be human. The 19-year-old has been Leeds’s find of the season, their player of the year by any rational judgement, but his rash clearance leading to Cardiff’s 64th-minute winner introduced him to the sharp end of the learning curve. Craig Bellamy teed the loose ball up for Fraizer Campbell who, on his debut and with his first touch, settled the game in a flash. Taken clinically, the chance was as much as Cardiff created. Either side of it they left Leeds to dictate proceedings ...

Leeds United earn draw at Bolton
Batley & Birstall News - over 4 years
GOALS either side of half-time earned Leeds United a valuable point away at Bolton Wanderers. Neil Warnock’s men were trailing to an early Kevin Davies header before Sam Byram equalised just before half-time and Luciano Becchio netted a penalty five minutes into the second half after Byram had been brought down according to referee Phil Dowd. But United’s hopes of a second away win in three days were dashed 11 minutes from time when former England international Davies was on target with another header. Leeds made one change to the team that had won 3-2 at Bristol City on Saturday, Adam Drury returning at left-back. As a result Lee Peltier was moved to his favoured right-back position with Byram preferred to Aidan White on the right flank. It was Bolton that made most of the running in the first half and went ahead on 14 minutes when Davies, always dangerous in the air, headed home from a corner. It could have been two soon after as keeper Paddy Kenny saved well to deny Keith Andr ...

Wyatt Troia: Justice for George Zimmerman
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
"Justice for Trayvon" is the rallying cry for those demanding George Zimmerman's immediate arrest in the shooting of Trayvon Martin. Yet forgotten in the rush to punish Zimmerman are the components of true justice: a presumption of innocence, dispassionate evaluation of the evidence, due process and color-blindness. Justice means justice for all, and that means both Martin and Zimmerman. New evidence continues to complicate a case that the media initially portrayed as clear-cut, turning many Americans against Zimmerman. Let's survey the snags, not to discredit Martin's family's account but to illustrate just how little we know with certainty about Martin's death. Did Zimmerman racially profile Martin in judging him "suspicious"? Here the distinction between racial profiling and holistic profiling is relevant. Zimmerman's friend Frank Taaffe said young black males had committed a string of recent robberies in the diverse neighborhood. Let's assume that is true. If Martin ...
