'Heat Days' Becoming Almost As Common As Snow Days
Huffington Post - over 3 years
CHICAGO -- When city students arrived for the first day of school under the blazing temperatures of a Midwest heat wave, staff greeted them with some unusual school supplies: water bottles, fans and wet towels to drape around their necks. What they couldn't always offer was air conditioning. "It's kind of hard to focus because everyone was sweating," said Deniyah Jones, a 12-year-old 7th-grader at Nash Elementary School on Chicago's West Side, which has just a few window units for the entire fortress-like brick and stone building. This year's late August heat exposed a tug-of-war in school districts that are under pressure to start school earlier than ever but are unable to pay to equip aging buildings with air conditioning. Parents who worry hot classrooms are a disadvantage for their kids are issuing an ultimatum: Make classes cooler or start the year later. "Thinking about air conditioning – we can't even afford new textbooks," said Bement Community Unit ...

Barbara Moore Vincent - activist - dies
San Francisco Chronicle - over 4 years
Barbara Moore Vincent - activist - dies A memorial service will be held Nov. 2 for Barbara Moore Vincent, a former Richmond city planner and environmental activist who helped start the regional advocacy group Save the Bay. Ms. Vincent, whose tireless work for public access is credited with helping save miles of shoreline from being overrun by industry, died of natural causes Sept. 24 in her childhood home in Richmond. In 1948, Ms. Vincent and several friends started the Richmond chapter of the League of Women Voters, a group that urged industry executives to relinquish land for parks and open space. The couple set out to change that, pushing through initiatives to preserve open space, open up public access, build trails and protect the ecology of the bay. Ms. Vincent, who earned a law degree from Hastings College of the Law when she was 50, was also involved in the creation of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission.

Gregory S. Parks: Black "Greek" Hazing Tied to Leadership Behavior
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Spurred by the senseless hazing death of Robert Champion at Florida A&M University in November 2011, U.S. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-FL, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority member) proposed legislation, on May 31, 2012, to end hazing on college campuses. During a press conference at the National Press Club, she and college-based organization leaders launched their national publicity campaign aimed at black Greek-letter organizations (BGLOs), themed "Let's not beat the life out of a beautiful legacy." Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity -- supported by other black fraternities and sororities as well as Reverend Al Sharpton's (Phi Beta Sigma member) National Action Network -- plans to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to supplement free media spots, with ESPN agreeing to broadcast public service announcements on its radio network in major markets. Even more, fraternities and sororities plan to hold sensitivity sessions around the country on September 6, 2012 to try and end violent ...

Huffington Post - almost 5 years
Andrew McCool, a teacher at South Lake High School in Seattle, Wash., is under investigation after allegedly choking and slapping a student on Wednesday, KOMO News reports. Student Iridian Sanchez told the station the incident occurred when McCool unsuccessfully attempted to get the students to pay attention to the class. "The teacher told him like four times be quiet," Sanchez, told KOMO News. "And the kids were laughing at him, making jokes at him." Seattle Police Det. Renee Witt told the station that when the students refused to quiet down, McCool yelled profanities then grabbed one student by the throat and slapped him. The Seattle Times reports the student went to the nurse's office and, after police were called, was taken to the hospital. "This type of action is inexcusable, and I want you to know that we take the safety and security of our students very seriously," South Lake Principal Barbara Moore said in response to the incident, according to the Sea ...
