Hollywood just caught some major movie pirates through Facebook, report reveals
Yahoo News - about 1 year
Several of the U.K.’s biggest movie pirates recently received jail sentences totaling 17 years (split among five malefactors). A sprawling investigation by a Hollywood-endorsed anti-piracy group, the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), led to the prosecutions brought against the five men. Now, thanks to investigation papers obtained by TorrentFreak, it has been revealed that the investigators found the men rather easily, via their social media accounts. The five culprits were responsible for managing a number of interconnected illegal file-sharing groups that together released more than 2,500 films online. The groups, named ‘RemixHD,’ ‘26K,’ ‘UNiQUE,’ ‘DTRG,’ and ‘HOPE/RESISTANCE’, had uploaded a variety of major films online, including Argo , The Avengers , and Skyfall , read a FACT statement. “The outreach of their criminality was vast. On just one website where the group shared their films there had been millions of downloads,” added the anti-piracy group. Related: Mad Max: F ...

Ryan Cleary, 21, will be free imminently despite being caught with images of children as young as six months, court hears A convicted computer hacker with the LulzSec collective is due to be released imminently despite being found with indecent images featuring infants as young as six months, a court has heard. Police officers found 172 images on two computers belonging to Ryan Cleary, 21, when they raided the home he shared with his mother in 2011 over his "hacktivist" actions. Cleary, known online as ViraL, was jailed for two years and eight months in May for his role in attacks by the LulzSec group on a range of organisations including the CIA and the Serious Organised Crime Agency. Their attacks placed the personal details of hundreds of thousands of people unencrypted on the internet, potentially at the mercy of organised crime. Judge Deborah Taylor on Wednesday sentenced Cleary, of Wickford, Essex, to serve community orders for making and producing indecent images of childr ...

LOOK: Incredible Total Eclipse Time Lapse
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Photographer Ben Cooper got an amazing time-lapse shot of this week's total solar eclipse from the Australian outback. More than 50,000 people gathered in northern Australia to watch the eclipse, and images of the eclipse were even taken from space. User "JohnPoe" posted the time-lapse photo to Reddit, where some wondered why there was light visible during a total eclipse. Some speculated that the "background" photo was taken before the totality of the eclipse. During a total eclipse, the moon casts a shadow cone over the path of the eclipse, but peripheral areas and the sun's corona remain illuminated.

Kate Schrauth: Mentoring the Next Generation Towards STEM Careers
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Did you have a special chemistry teacher who helped light a spark (and I don't mean a Bunsen burner) that led to a career in science? Or a baseball coach who said your knack for calculating batting averages could be an asset in math class? If so, you're one of the lucky few who was encouraged at an early age in one the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Teenagers are often insecure about their math and science skills or discouraged by peer pressure from pursuing STEM fields; especially women and minorities. National Science Foundation data shows that the science and engineering workforce is largely white and male; Blacks and Hispanics are only 7 percent of the workforce. There's a shortage of qualified U.S. applicants to fill STEM jobs, and significant under-representation of minorities and candidates from low-income and rural backgrounds. Many students never make it into the STEM pipeline at all, because of inadequate preparation and supp ...

Summer’s almost here, and with it—a new book by Chevy Chase native Jennifer Miller. The Year of the Gadfly is “a fun, literary prep school novel, with a mystery driven forward by a high school journalist whose only friend is the ghost of Edward R. Murrow,” Miller explained. The journalist, young Iris Dupont, is a teen-age reporter who communes with Murrow’s ghost. A second main character, Jonah Kaplan, is a failed microbiologist-turned biology teacher who is haunted by the ghosts of his past. “Each embarks on a private investigation to uncover a secret society in their remote New England town,” Miller explained on her website. "As Iris and Jonah's paths start to intersect, they are drawn into the darker corners of their town, their school, and their own minds.” For a fun preview of The Year of the Gadfly, watch Miller’s trailer, in which journalists and writers such as Andrea Mitchell, Sam Donaldson, Marvin Kalb (also of Chevy Chase), Christiane Amanpour and Gary Shteyng ...
