21 Times We Thought Something 'Is The New' Something Else
Huffington Post - over 3 years
"Orange Is the New Black" is the new thing to watch. The Netflix series chronicling the daily highs and lows of life as an incarcerated woman has charmed critics with its well-balanced servings of humor, heartbreak and above all, humanity. But if the phrase "is the new" sounds familiar to you, that's because, of course, it is. "[BLANK] is the new black" originated in the fashion world, and nascent uses came in the early '80s in the Los Angeles Times. (A late-'70s version, from the New York Times: "Colors are the new neutrals.") The entertainment world loves "is the new," too. You could even say that "Orange is the New Black" is the new "is the new." Take a look at some other examples below, and let us know if you think "Orange is the New Black" is the best "is the new" in the comments. 1. "Brown Is the New Green: George Lopez and the American Dream," a 2007 look into how Latinos like George Lopez are shaping Latin-American identity. 2."Different is the New Norm ...

Bicester Rugby Club round-up
Advertiser & Review - over 4 years
Bicester 1st XV secured their first win of the season as they edged out Aylesbury Athletic 43-40 in an entertaining match. While weak tackling let in Alyesbury for five of their six tries, some strong scrummaging by the Bicester forwards produced four second half tries, ensuring that the visitors returned home with victory. It was Aylesbury who took the lead when their fly-half sprinted from inside his own half, past several defenders to the posts for a converted score. Bicester’s Dave Aslett quickly levelled the scores as he went over on the left with Dan Spence converting. Chris Nixon then put the visitors ahead as he raced through before the home side regained the lead with two quick tries. On the stroke of half time Bicester reduced the arrears to 19-17 as Aslett was released for his second try. Early in the second half George Howson went over for the hosts while Michael Harris was next to cross with Spencer again kicking the extras to give his side a 31-19 advantage. Howev ...

Twitter Lawyer Announces Appeal in Tweet, Argues Users Have Standing to Challenge Subpoenas
ABA Journal - over 4 years
Twitter is supporting Occupy Wall Street protester Malcolm Harris in an appeal that argues he has standing to challenge subpoenas issued by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. Twitter legal counsel Ben Lee announced the appeal in a tweet, IDG News Service reports. “Twitter users own their tweets,” he wrote in another tweet. “They have a right to fight invalid government requests, and we continue to stand with them in that fight.” Judge Matthew Sciarrino Jr. had ruled June 30 that Twitter had to turn over Harris’ user information and tweets. Harris, who has been charged with disorderly conduct, had admitted…

Tweet Free or Die: In Defense of Occupy Protester, Twitter Fights the Man
All Things D- Liz Gannes - almost 5 years
Taking a bold stance on the privacy rights of its users, Twitter on Tuesday filed a motion to quash a New York State court ruling that would require the company to hand over information on one of its users, Malcolm Harris, in connection with an ongoing investigation. “As we said in our brief, ‘Twitter’s Terms of Service make absolutely clear that its users own their content,’” Twitter legal counsel Ben Lee said in a statement provided to AllThingsD. “Our filing with the court reaffirms our steadfast commitment to defending those rights for our users.” Twitter’s filing comes after Harris’s initial motion to quash was struck down in court. The court found that Harris lacked the legal standing to challenge the request for Twitter information on his own behalf. Harris, a senior editor at online publication The New Inquiry, was arrested in conjunction with a massive Occupy Wall Street protest last October that blocked the Brooklyn Bridge. He was one of more than 700 people arrested. ...

Twitter sides with Occupy protester in NY court battle over tweet history
Guardian (UK) - almost 5 years
Prosecutor is trying to subpoena three months of tweets, but service argues content belongs to users, not the company Twitter has moved to quash a court order issued by the New York district attorney which would require it to hand over the tweets of a writer and Occupy Wall Street protester arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge last October. In a motion filed in the criminal court in New York on Monday Twitter argued that it should not be forced to give the prosecutor three months worth of tweets by Malcolm Harris, who was arrested on the bridge along with 700 other activists. Harris had issued his own motion in a bid to quash the subpoena in February, contending that there was "no justification" for New York prosecutors to seek "such a broad swath of electronic data". The motion was rejected by Judge Matthew A Sciarrino Jr on 20 April, in an order ruling that Harris did not have the legal standing to challenge the subpoena because Twitter owned the rights to his tweets. Twitter filed ...
