Five Coastal Rhode Island Luminaries That Are Not Taylor Swift
Huffington Post - 5 months
When Taylor Swift purchased her oceanfront home in Watch Hill, she drew a lot of attention to the south coast of Rhode Island, leading to a bump-up in tourism: a Swift Effect if you will. But her mansion on the hill is just one of the singer's many homes, and Swift is very rarely in residence. Besides, there were other people and places of note in Watch Hill, Westerly and South Kingston long before Swift arrived, and these notables - an iconic Victorian-age resort, a celebrity chef, a celebrated mixologist, and a rock-star oyster farmer - are infinitely more accessible. Come to Coastal Rhode Island and you might see Taylor Swift, but you'll definitely have a memorable time interacting with the following stars: (And for much more on these and other things to do here and in the Northeast, consult the Getaway Mavens). 1. Ocean House Resort, Watch Hill. She's got beauty, smarts, and on top of that is really, really nice: you know, the girl you want to hate but can't. ...

How Pizza Changed My Life: An Ode to Cheese
Huffington Post - about 1 year
It was just National Cheese Lover's Day, and I couldn't be happier. For a few years, cheese was something I could only dream of inhaling. I was your typical well-fed Jewish girl, partial to Chinese food and non-alcoholic Shirley Temples. Nowhere in my teenage view could I ever had anticipated a coma right before my senior prom, and months later, being awoken by doctors who solemnly shook their heads and shrugged as they said, "You can't eat or drink right now. And we don't know when... or if... you'll ever be able to again." When surgeons miraculously reconstructed my digestive system, food was a thrilling discovery. A lot of people ask what the first thing I ate was. Believe it or not, I brought a little frozen waffle with me to the doctors. A mini one. For some reason, I REALLY wanted to have a frozen waffle. So I had a bite, and then I realized I had to start with baby food. Oh well. Nothing is as glamorous as it seems. Have you ever had something in your life that you've re ...

Thanksgiving Roasting With Our Favorite Celebrity Chefs
Huffington Post - over 1 year
The healing properties of cooking cannot be denied. Following a set of instructions and busying your hands is like hitting the reset button on your brain. With Thanksgiving coming up, odds are, you're going to be in the kitchen in one way or another. Whether it's slicing radishes for a side salad, or being head chef calling all the turkey shots, let this holiday be the one where you pop on The Big Chill soundtrack, mash the crap out of some potatoes and bliss the hell out. Combining my two favorite things (being encouraged to overeat in America's honor and divorce), I've taken the liberty of rounding up some great Thanksgiving recipes from my favorite divorced chefs. via GIPHY Alton Brown is divorced. Did you know that? Me neither! Maybe his ex-wife couldn't stand hearing about yeast budding for one more minute, and hit the bricks. We'll never know. But what we do know is appetizers are a key component of Thanksgiving. They keep the hanger away and the pre-dinner whining t ...

Kerry Alaric Cheeseboro Reveals the True Heart and Soul of New York City Food
Huffington Post - over 1 year
"Food! Photos! People! Love! Eating with our eyes, mouths, hearts, minds, and souls..." Kerry Alaric Cheeseboro The irony is not lost on me that one of America's most cherished foods is embedded in his surname -- which, incidentally, affords his persona an added measure of flavor! As 2015 draws to a close, many of us who have resided in or around New York City for more than a generation are quick to righteously bemoan the gentrification, homogenization, over-commercialization, and consequent purification of our beloved five boroughs, which has accelerated rather significantly in the 21st Century as economic inequality soars and technology becomes increasingly pervasive and distracting. The residual effects stretch nationwide -- what happens in New York City happens to America -- from your bank account to your dinner table. However we New Yorkers are also quick to cherish the "cracks" in our for-better-or-for-worse metropolis, because, as Leonard Cohen -- the Canadian trouba ...

Giada De Laurentiis Reveals She's Dating Someone New
Huffington Post - over 1 year
You're not likely to find celeb chef Giada De Laurentiis on a dating site any time soon. The newly divorced Food Network star told she has no need for dating apps. “I don’t do any of that,” the 44-year-old said. “And I would say that, it’s OK -- that maybe I don’t need to date so much because maybe I already have someone I like and I don’t have to.” De Laurentiis, who finalized her divorce from Todd Thompson after 11 years of marriage in September, may not have revealed who the mystery man is, but there's one person we can probably rule out: fellow Food Network star Bobby Flay.  Though the two have been romantically linked in the past (they both divorced around the same time -- Flay finalized his split from "Law & Order: SVU " star Stephanie March in July), De Laurentiis put the rumors to rest on Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live" Thursday night.  "We do get together on [reality show] 'Food Network Star'" she told host Andy Cohen. "We're very good friends. W ...

Brunch With Emily Blunt at the Hamptons International Film Festival
Huffington Post - over 1 year
The Maidstone in East Hampton was party central for the Hamptons International Film Festival, both scheduled and spontaneous. Caterer Janet O'Brien, supplying the Guild Hall green room with goodies of cheeses and figs, spoke about partying late into the night at the Maidstone, sipping the Bedell wines. On Sunday morning, the dining room was locus of a HIFF institution: brunch celebrating "The Variety 10 to Watch," a program for young actors, mentored by Emily Blunt, herself a "rising star" from a previous version of the same program. Now of course, Blunt has risen: (see The Devil Wears Prada, and the recent action thriller Sicario). Bel Powley (noted for The Diary of a Teenage Girl and her latest A Royal Night Out) and Christopher Abbott (HBO's Girls and James White) are among this year's most looked at actors. In previous years, Dane DeHaan, Alicia Vikander, and Adam Driver occupied that spot, and look how they turned out. Milling about the Maidstone prior to brunch was Liev Schrei ...
