Chevonne Harris: Dear Black Romcoms, Where'd You Go?
Huffington Post - about 4 years
In the midst of planning for a midweek movie night, I had an epiphany. As a self-proclaimed movie buff whose wardrobe contains pieces mentally marked "cinema attire, " and whose movie must-haves include the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the lesser-known Disney classic Polly, I couldn't help but offer a sigh of lament and irritation to the movie Gods upon taking inventory of my latest viewing options -- a former slave turned bounty hunter, dwarves on a 166 minute mission to slay a dragon, and the marital woes of a 40-something white couple. And just as I was resigning myself to a night of DVR'd television, it hit me; I miss black romantic comedies. Not just any romantic comedy that boasts a handful of black actors, but real black movies with real black casts, highlighting real black love and made for real black people. Classics like Love and Basketball, The Best Man, Brown Sugar, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, and the holy grail of black romcoms, Love Jones. The days of ...

Myrdith Leon Mccormack: The Family Guy- Boris Kodjoe Supports ABFF And Gold Peak Tea
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Boris Kodjoe--to the eye of the beholder, 6'4", tall, dark and strikingly handsome--is not just your average good (better than good) looking Black man. If you do your research, Boris Frederic Cecil Tay-Natey Ofuatey-Kodjoe, is an Austrian-born, German and Ghanaian actor/model living in America. And you know how we Americans roll, you're either Black or White. So we'll take him. His better known credits are the Showtime series Soul Food, and feature films The Gospel, Brown Sugar, and Resident Evil: Afterlife. He also starred in the NBC action/drama Undercovers (What ever happened to that show?). Actress Nicole Ari Parker, his wife of seven years, is equally as stunning. They personally remind me of two other power couples, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, and Michelle and Barack Obama. The chemistry that you see on the screen is a real connection between the two. There's not enough acting in the world to make anyone believe that they wouldn't walk through fire for each other. They ...

Tanya Young Williams: Red Carpet Treatment for Martin Family As Celebrities, Activists and Supporters Pack Prestigious L.A. Church
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
Los Angeles plays host to entertainment's biggest award shows; President Obama stops by the city to raise millions of dollars at celebrity homes; the rich, the famous and the want-to-be famous understand that L.A. is the place to be if you want to be seen. Therefore, it makes perfect sense that the handlers of the biggest story to capture the country's attention in 2012 would choose Los Angeles as the backdrop for their big announcement. The Trayvon Martin family formally launched the Justice for Trayvon Martin Foundation on the stage of one of the nation's most prestigious churches -- The West Angeles Church of God in Christ. The night also marked the two month anniversary of the tragic killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin's death, at the hands of 28-year-old, self-appointed, community watchman George Zimmerman. For the first time, the advisors of Tracy Martin and Sabrina Fulton, the parents of Trayvon Martin, outlined the purpose for the newly established foundation ...
