Ted Nugent: From Behind the Six String
Huffington Post - over 1 year
"Ted Nugent is a working hard, playing hard, all-American, ass-kicking, son of a bitch, who exudes and defines the soulfulness of American rhythm and blues and rock 'n' roll -- and a pretty damn good bow hunter too." -- Ted Nugent He may be known as the "Motor City Madman," but when Ted Nugent called me up a few months back as I sat in my hotel room in New Orleans, the way that he spoke reminded me of a book that I once read called, Zen In The Art Of Archery, by Eugen Herrigel. Although the book is one man's quest to understand Zen Buddhism taught through the learning of archery, I found that you could substitute any form of art in place of the word "archery" and it would apply. In the book there is a passage that reads: ... the right frame of mind for the artist is only reached when the preparing and creating, the technical and the artistic, the material and the spiritual, the project and the object, flow together without a break. Although my interviews primarily are guitar- ...

Notes from a River’d Styx
Democrat Herald - over 4 years
Styx (photo by Ash Newell) A lot of news-folks asked me, “Hey, gonna see Styx this weekend?” But they asked as if my answer should have been, “Oh, hell, no,” which would then give us license to lambaste the band as fossilized bloat, glistening arena-heap stomped down to size by karma. (The office can be an unusually cruel venue for entertainment-related badinage.) Instead, I said I wasn’t sure — you never know — but most signs pointed to “Yes.” At my age, I no longer need to justify or apologize for my musical tastes to Hipoisie buttinskies. For one, I’ve always liked Styx; “The Grand Illusion” and “Pieces of Eight” are irrefutable (that’s right: IRREFUTABLE) masterpieces and I’ve owned them without shame in every conceivable format. I’m also a fan of progressive rock and of music in general, which is why I write about it (imagine!). When I interviewed keyboardist Lawrence Gowan last month, I busted my cortex suppressing my inner geek. My God, not only am I speaking to a genuine ...

Mike Ragogna: Driving Towards The Daylight to Noise In My Head: A Conversation with Joe Bonamassa and DarkDriveClinic's "Litmus Heart"
Huffington Post - over 4 years
A Conversation with Joe Bonamassa Mike Ragogna: Joe, how and what are you doing, man? Joe Bonamassa: I'm doing fine. I'm actually here doing my debut on David Letterman, sitting in with the band. It's a real honor. We're in New York and we're just about to wrap up the American tour. Plus, we have a new record coming out. There's lots of news. MR: How is the Letterman experience? JB: It's great. I've done a couple of television shows before. It's one of those things...it's a different world from the world I travel in. I play real loud. You get to blast. This is a little more contained. They end a song in the middle of a song because they have to cut to a commercial. There's no time for the big rock ending. It's fun. MR: You also performed at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame recently. JB: I did. I had a small part in inducting Freddie King. It was myself, the two bearded ones from ZZ Top--Dusty and Billy--and my friend of twenty years, if you can believe or n ...

Aerosmith: Pioneers of rock
The Express Tribune Blogs - almost 5 years
LOS ANGELES:  Veteran rock band Aerosmith — which comprises of guitarist Joe Perry, bassist Tom Hamilton, singer Steven Tyler, drummer Joey Kramer and bassist Brad Whitford — said on Wednesday that they are bringing “a little of 1975 back” with their long-delayed album of new material. The album that is scheduled to release this summer will coincide with the band’s US tour. Aerosmith said they were working on finishing up the album — the first of new material since 2001’s Just Push Play — ahead of the tour, but refused to divulge the title of the album. “The camaraderie’s there, there’s some songs that are new rock, and old rock and middle-of-the-road rock and blues,” 64-year-old frontman Steven Tyler said. The band will kick off their North American ‘Global Warming Tour’ on June 16 in Minneapolis and will be playing in 18 cities from Toronto to Oakland, California and Atlanta, Georgia. “You’re going to get some new songs from the new album and ...

More Details Hide Details While Joe Perry is Aerosmith's better known guitarist and the band's principal songwriter with Steven Tyler, Whitford has made significant contributions to the band's repertoire over the years. This includes co-writing Aerosmith's hit "Last Child" as well as some of Aerosmith's heaviest songs: "Nobody's Fault" and "Round and Round", and playing lead guitar on "Sick as a Dog" and "Back In the Saddle" (on which Perry plays six string bass), "Last Child", and on the ballads "You See Me Crying" and "Home Tonight". When Aerosmith made their comeback in the late 1980s, Whitford continued to co-write tracks such as "Permanent Vacation" and "Voodoo Medicine Man", and plays occasional lead guitar on some more recent tracks. Concerning his lesser role in the band's songwriting process, Whitford has said, "I don't consider myself a terribly prolific writer. I can write music with other people if they're better songwriters than I am. I really can't create a song. It's very difficult to do. That's why the people that can do it are very few and far between. I'm certainly not that type of a guy. More of a guitar player, more of the kind of guy who comes up with enough riffs and ideas to write a song. But to write lyrics and come up with a melody for it, it won't happen."
