Dwight Brown: Flight
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Grass. Booze. Cocaine. Veteran pilot Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) hits the drug-abuse trifecta. And that's just hours before he straps himself into the cockpit of a 50-ton jet, with 96 passengers and six flight crew members aboard. On the plane's ascent from the Orlando, Fla. airport, he battles treacherous weather with blinding storm clouds and hurricane-like winds; his co-pilot gets so scared he nearly wets his pants. Fasten your seatbelts. Washington often plays anger in his films (Training Day, Hurricane). It's almost like being perturbed is his pet emotion and he finds roles to suit his disposition, or he gravitates to perpetually pissed-off characters. Either way, when you fathom a Denzel Washington movie, you are likely to envision an angry persona. It is refreshing, almost novel, to watch him play a role that is far more nuanced and emotionally and psychologically multifaceted. As the plane levels off, past the bad weather, Whip snoozes and the co-pilot (B ...

What's The Word On 'Flight'?
Huffington Post - over 4 years
If "Flight" weren't so exceptionally crafted and acted, this tale of self-destruction and eventual redemption might feel like the sort of feel-good fare you'd see on the Lifetime Movie Network, or even a 12-step-program promotion. Instead, director Robert Zemeckis' first live-action film since 2000's "Cast Away" is by turns thrilling, engrossing and even darkly funny, anchored by a tremendous performance from Denzel Washington. This is one of those Washington roles, like his Oscar-winning work in "Training Day," in which he exudes a potent mix of damage and bravado, control and danger, but he's so incredibly charismatic even as he does bad deeds that you can't help but root for him. Here, Zemeckis and screenwriter John Gatins have given him a deeply flawed character and placed him in a complicated situation, and allowed him to put the best of what he can do on display. Washington stars as Whip Whitaker, a veteran airline pilot and serious alcoholic. When we first ...

True Blood “Let’s Boot and Rally” Teaser
Boom Tron - over 4 years
You probably caught the latest episode, the fourth of the season 5, of True Blood last night on the HBO so it’s time to forget about the old stuff (though if you want to linger on Eric and Pam for a little while longer, I guess that’s allowable). Below is a brief tv teaser for next week’s ”Let’s Boot and Rally”. Looks like more looking for Russell, with Sookie and Alcide added to the mix, Tara getting some vamp advice, a hostage situation, bad dreams, demon magic and Jesus. In other words, a typical day in Bon Temps, and throw in Vampire Authority ultimatums for fun. “Let’s Boot and Rally” airs Sunday, July 8 at 9 P.M. ET on HBO. True Blood “Let’s Boot and Rally” Episode Summary (5.05) - With time running short, Bill and Eric enlist Sookie to probe for clues on Russell’s hiding place. Unable to deal with the demon magic inside him, Lafayette calls out to Jesus’ spirit for help. Kyle Gallner Joins ‘Beautiful Creatures’; Abigail Spencer Co-Starring In ‘Kilimanjaro’
The Film Stage - almost 5 years
Richard LaGravenese ought to be shooting Beautiful Creatures right now, but one or two roles still need to be filled before casting is complete. After all, Variety reports that Kyle Gallner (Red State, A Nightmare on Elm Street) will join the young adult fantasy love story what-have-you, therefore putting him in the company of Alden Ehrenreich, Emmy Rossum, Emma Thompson, Viola Davis, Jeremy Irons, and a few others. Amidst the story of two lovers who “uncover dark secrets about their families, their history and their town,” Gallner will be playing Larkin, younger brother of Rossum‘s character, Lena, who puts a spell on him. And now I have that soul song stuck in my head. The film will hit on February 1st, 2013. Secondly, THR has learned that Brian Geraghty won’t be going it alone on Walter Strafford‘s Kilimanjaro. Abigail Spencer (Mad Men) has been confirmed to join the independent drama, which revolves around a man who, after a break-up, finds himself compelled to climb Mt. Kili ...

MOVIE REVIEW | 'SEVEN DAYS IN UTOPIA'; Robert Duvall Is Back in the Saddle, Playing a Mentor to a Young Golfer
NYTimes - over 5 years
Face it: the image of a golfer sinking a putt conveys little of the visceral thrill of a batter slamming a home run or a boxer scoring a knockout punch. To pretend otherwise is to risk being accused of sports hubris, an attitude that the humorless, mystically fortified golfing movie ''Seven Days in Utopia'' embraces unashamedly. A stultifying
