After long sentence, US judge calls herself 'Hulk'
San Francisco Chronicle - almost 4 years
After long sentence, US judge calls herself 'Hulk' DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A first-year federal judge in Iowa sent an email comparing herself to the comic book superhero the Hulk after giving a defendant a longer prison sentence than prosecutors sought, warning that attorneys "won't like me when I'm angry," according to newly unsealed court records. A defense attorney argues the email is part of a pattern in which U.S. District Judge Stephanie Rose, the nation's youngest federal judge at 40, is improperly acting as "prosecutor-in-chief" by pushing prosecutors to enhance sentences and detain defendants in some cases rather than bargain away those options in plea deals. In a case involving former drug dealer Bryan Holm, Rose last year ordered him detained after he pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, over the objections of prosecutors and the defense. Transcripts show Rose called a Boone police officer to the witness stand, questioned the o ...

SUV in fatal crash that left 6 teens dead was stolen, owner says
Fox News - about 4 years
Investigators on Monday tried to piece together what eight teenagers crammed into a stolen sport utility vehicle were up to before the vehicle flipped over into a pond, killing six of them. Authorities gave few details on where the group of friends had been and why they were out around daybreak Sunday, speeding down a two-lane road. On Monday, the SUV's owner met with police and filed a stolen-car report; police said none of the teens was related to the owner or had asked to use the vehicle. Whether all the teens knew the SUV was stolen wasn't clear. Neither was their whereabouts before the crash. While the father of one of the dead said the teenagers were coming home from a sleepover at a friend's house, the mother of another boy killed said that her son and his best friend had lied about staying over at each other's homes that evening. She said she thinks they went to a party. "If only he had listened," said Lisa Williamson, mother of 14-year-old Brandon Murray. "I told h ...

Police investigate Ohio crash that killed 6 teens
Fox News - about 4 years
Investigators spent Monday trying to piece together why eight teenagers were crammed into a speeding SUV without the owner's permission when it flipped over into a pond, killing six of them. Authorities gave no details on where the group of friends had been and why they were out around daybreak Sunday. But the father of one of the dead said they were coming home from a sleepover at a friend's house. No one in the group had asked to take the vehicle, and its owner was not related to any of the teens, said State Highway Patrol Lt. Brian Holt. It was registered to someone from Youngstown, about 20 miles away. "That's all we know right now," Holt said. State police said the SUV hit a guardrail on a two-lane road in an industrial section of town and landed upside down in about 5 feet of water, filling up in a matter of minutes, Holt said. Five boys and a young woman, ages 14 to 19, were killed. Two boys smashed a rea ...

Maureen Ryan: 'Cougar Town' Returns, But On TBS: Will Fans Enjoy The Same Buzz?
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Being a TV fan involves a certain amount of heartbreak. In my mind, recent gone-too-soon shows like "Terriers" and "Better Off Ted" are off gallivanting at an upstate farm, and I'll thank you for not trying to convince me otherwise. But it'd be churlish not to admit that we're living in an era of heartening developments that have altered the fates of many TV programs. Shows don't have to die (er, I mean, be sent to that idyllic farm) -- they can just wander off to find more welcoming homes. Sure, in the past there were the occasional network switcheroos ("Stargate SG-1," "JAG" and "Buffy," among other shows, aired on more than one channel), but they were pretty rare exceptions to the rule, which generally held that the network that aired a program got to decide what ultimately happened to it. That God-like power is diminishing, thank goodness. These days, with hundreds of networks and online platforms competing for eyeballs, it's easy to see why programs as varied ...

The Best Cyber Monday Tips For The Savvy Online Shopper
Huffington Post - over 4 years
By Beth Pinsker Gladstone NEW YORK, Nov 23 (Reuters) - In a one-day blitz of shopping, consumers are expected to empty their wallets of more than $1 billion on Cyber Monday, the online shopping spree on Nov. 26, according to spending projections from research firm, ComScore. The day follows closely on the heels of Black Friday on Nov. 23, which kicks off the holiday shopping season at stores, and is often the busiest shopping day for retailers. Come Monday, not every web-browsing window shopper will hit the "buy" button, and 65 percent of shopping carts are typically abandoned by online shoppers, says the Baynard Institute in Copenhagen. These consumers may be motivated by a belief, often correct, that there's a better deal out there. Cyber Monday 2012 may offer the best deals on technology products this year, says Brian Hoyt, senior writer for RetailMeNot.com, a coupon code site. That's because merchants have held back their best deals for the Bla ...

High school coder gets $3M for his gradebook software, 10 years later
Venture Beat - almost 5 years
Classroom management software company Engrade has closed a $3 million funding round. Company founder Bri Holt developed an online gradebook in 2003, while he was still a high school student. While I was chasing boys and trying to pass algebra, Holt was developing software that would eventually lead to a business. He now serves as the chief technology expert for Engrade. What started as a simple gradebook has morphed into a full featured software suite with teacher-specific tools, such as seating charts, discipline tracking, and alerts for at-risk students. There are also parent-teacher communication tools, such as email reports and mass text messaging. School administrators can use Engrade to view teachers and their students’ progress in grades and classroom performance. At an even higher level, school boards are able to manage data from multiple schools and students with Engrade, keeping track of grade point averages, disciplinary problems, and test scores. Engrade has built up ...
