Samsung's marketing splurge doesn't always bring bang-for-buck
Yahoo News - about 3 years
By Miyoung Kim SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co is expected to spend around $14 billion - more than Iceland's GDP - on advertising and marketing this year, but it doesn't always get value for money. And Samsung, which has a market value of $227 billion, has made no secret of keeping up its aggressive marketing and promotion splurge as it seeks to make its brand as aspirational as Apple Inc's. But the money it's spending doesn't always bring the desired result. "Is this a singing competition or an extended Samsung advert?" asked Twitter user Ryan Browne. Earlier this year, Samsung's New York launch of its latest top-of-the-range Galaxy smartphone came under fire for being sexist, portraying giggling women chatting about jewelry and nail polish while the men discussed the new phone, and the company's new fridge and washing machine launch in South Africa drew similar complaints as it featured swim-suit dancers.

Casting Roundup: Leonardo Dicaprio Becomes President, Kelsey Grammer Becomes Expendable
Bleeding Cool - over 3 years
Leonardo Dicaprio still dreams of Oscar, Aaron Eckhart gives exorcism a shot and Kelsey Grammer is the latest Expendable in today’s roundup. • Remember how loose canon, crazy-eyed Nicolas Cage was courted for The Expendables 3? Well, he passed and we get Frasier Crane instead. Kelsey Grammer is taking the role once earmarked for Cage, that of an ally of the aging action stars crew consisting of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Terry Crews, Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Wesley Snipes. The source claims Grammer has a new tough guy image thanks to his series Boss and an upcoming villain role in Transformers: Age of Extinction, but personally I will never get this out of my head. [Deadline] • Hot on the heels of another success at the box office, horror power player Blumhouse has lined up their next project, Incarnate, set to star Aaron Eckhart. Eckhart will play an unconventional exorcist who can tap into the subconsc ...

'The Good Wife' Returns With Major Shift
Huffington Post - over 4 years
When "The Good Wife" returns this fall, it won't be the jolly-go-lucky Lockhart/Gardner we've seen in the past -- it'll be far from it. "[Season 4] picks up at a very dramatic moment for all the characters," series star Christine Baranski, who plays Diane Lockhart, says in the Entertainment Tonight video below. "The firm is definitely in crisis." Enter Nathan Lane. Lane will play a trustee for the creditors who comes in and makes cuts to Lockhart/Gardner. Lane's character will be incredibly powerful -- nobody is safe from his axe. Baranski said Lane's character fires an entire department early in Season 4 of "The Good Wife." Goodbye, mergers and acquisitions. "There's a big, big seismic shift at the beginning of this season," Baranski says. Season 4 opens with Diane in bankruptcy court, something Baranski said is "devastating" for her character to deal with. In addition to Lane, "The Good Wife" will welcome new faces in Season 4 played by Kristin Chenoweth, Maura ...

Retama Park sold to investment group
KSAT - almost 5 years
Plans are already in the works to make some significant changes at Retama Park Racetrack, according to the president and CEO of Pinnacle Entertainment. “We’re here for the long-term,” said Anthony Sanfilippo during an informal news conference at the track on Thursday. Sanfilippo said, “This is not a short-term investment. It’s an investment to help this facility grow and prosper and for us to be a part of this community." Under the terms of the sale, Pinnacle Entertainment will pay $22.8 million to acquire a 75.5 percent stake in the track. Bryan Brown, CEO of Retama Entertainment, said the time for the sale was right. “Our business has been very, very good. It is an opportunity to capitalize on that and make this facility better. It is something we felt we had to do today," said Brown. He said the facility will initially undergo what he called some "sprucing up."  Long-term, he said, he envisions expansion to include restaurants, theatres and gaming operations. ...

Canada’s big banks flee nonprime market amid signs of housing downturn
Financial Post - almost 5 years
Home Capital Group Inc. said it’s capturing mortgage business from Canadian lenders including Toronto-Dominion Bank and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce that are retreating from the $200 billion nonprime market amid signs of a housing downturn. “The big banks are sort of juggling around their mortgage strategy and as part of that, they’re tightening up in certain areas,” Home Capital President Martin Reid said in an interview. “We’re seeing some of the fallout.” Canada’s banks have been exercising more caution on higher- risk mortgages after Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney warned that record household debt remains the biggest domestic risk to the economy. Carney this week signalled the potential for interest rate increases that would cool off a housing market that has seen prices almost triple in some Canadian cities over the past decade.   Related Why Toronto’s overheated housing market is unsustainable Mortgage wars backfire Know the ropes of renegotiating your ...

Former Black Eyed Peas business manager files for bankruptcy
LATimes - almost 5 years
A music industry business manager who has acknowledged failing to file income-tax returns for the Black Eyed Peas and other clients has filed for bankruptcy. In a petition Sunday seeking Chapter 7 protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles, a lawyer for Sean Larkin estimated his debts at between $500,000 and $1 million. The Peas stopped working with Larkin, 41, after learning he had not filed state and federal returns for years. He is being sued by the group’s guitarist and another client, a television executive, for breach of contract. The lawsuits accuse Larkin of hiding letters from the IRS and state tax authorities demanding payment of back taxes. In a deposition this year in the executive’s case, Larkin admitted that he hadn’t filed the returns and testified that he was “overwhelmed by work flow” after the Peas hit it big. Larkin’s 5% cut of the Peas' income -- a stream of revenue from touring, merchandise, music sales and endorsement deals -- should have made ...
