12.9.15 #SongBlogIV (my song of the day): "White Iverson (Remix)" by Post Malone ft. French Montana and Slim Jimmy In a year where there were rap feuds (Meek Mill and Drake) and controversy, a few rappers were able to get a breakout hit. Post Malone was no different. Called "the most random success" by the Fader magazine, Post Malone's first single is a great one. This remix featuring French Montana and Slim Jimmy (Rae Sremmurd) is even better. SEE: http://www.thefader.com/2015/05/14/everything-you-need-to-know-about-post-malone One thing that is important to note however, is that Post Malone is this breakout rapper from Dallas this year (and in a while, quite honestly). But there are a couple more Dallas rappers you should check out. Here are 4 Dallas rappers you may have not heard of and/or you should revisit: 1. The D.O.C: It's Funky He's worked with heavyweights - Dr. Dre, N.W.A. You might have also seen him portrayed on this year's Straight Outta Compton. ...

Track List for Taylor Swift's New Album Leaked
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Now that another Taylor Swift boyfriend has bit the dust, we expected a new album of Swift-fueled girl-power breakup anthems to be on the way. This is what the prophecies have stated to hold true now and for eternity. But, man, nobody thought Swift would put it together so quickly. Swift apparently wrote a brand-new, still-untitled album specifically about former flame Calvin Harris, who was caught entering a massage parlor notorious for dishing out happy endings, and the track listing has already leaked. Take a look below: 1. "Guess What, Normal Guy? You've Got a Chance With Me Now" 2. "Rub and Tug My Heart" 3. "This Song is Specifically About Calvin's Small Penis" 4. "You Won't Believe How Many Pinterest Boards I'm Making About You Right Now" 5. "Gonna Enter a Big-Time Slutty Phase" 6. "I Will Spend My Fortune Destroying You" 7. "Thanks for the Inspiration" 8. "Definitely Don't Want You Back (Please Come Back) (No, No, Definitely Don't Want You Back)" ...

Hip-Hop and Religion With Bun B and Professor Pinn
Huffington Post - almost 2 years
Photo Credit: Roberta Magrini Hip Hop and religion are not two things that seem to have much of a connection to each other to the average person. Professor Anthony Pinn of Rice University has based 20+ years on it though. When he started teaching at Rice University he wanted to have an artist he admired in the classroom to join him. One of his PhD students was able to reach out to the legendary Houston rapper, Bun B to get him as a guest lecturer. Things went so well that they started teaching the class together. Since 2011, the unlikely duo has been teaching the most popular class at Rice University on this exact subject. In fact, the class has been so successful that they are now translating into a free online course. It will be available later this month for anyone to take because of the demand they could not fulfill within the classroom. Recently I had a chance to sit down with both of them to talk a bit about their experience together. Professor Anthony Pinn received his P ...

Erik Nielson: Where Would Hip Hop Be Without Colleges and Universities?
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
In an interview with Fuse last year, Kendrick Lamar--who just took the top spot in MTV's annual "Hottest MCs in the Game" list--revealed that his greatest regret in life was that he never attended college when he was younger. "Now all these years have passed, and I done got deep into a career, a music career," he said. "It's gonna be hard to find time unless I really put my focus into it." It might seem strange that a rapper at the top of his game would place such importance on going to college, especially coming from a genre that prizes street knowledge over formal education. And yet a glance just a bit further down the "Hottest MCs" list reveals that the ivory tower has been a stop along the path to stardom for some of today's biggest names, including Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, and Kanye West. In fact, this has been true throughout most of hip hop's 40 year history. While traditional narratives tend to present early hip hop solely as the product of marginalized urban you ...

Beyonce Shows Her Houston Roots
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Just weeks after Beyonce debuted "Bow Down / I Been On," a remix has dropped. Led by Houston rapper Bun B, the "I Been On" remix premiered on Houston's KBXX's 97.9 on Friday -- take a listen above. The gritty track also features verses from Scarface, Lil KeKe, Slim Thug, Willie D, and Z-Ro. With lines such as "This is Texas, Texas," verses in the remix celebrate the Houston roots of Beyonce and the rappers featured on the track. Bun B tweeted at his fellow collaborators on Friday night, nodding to Houston in the tweet. Beyonce's original "Bow Down" single has already caused its own fair share of controversy. The track was slammed by Keyshia Cole, who questioned Beyonce's stance on female empowerment by saying, "First 'women need to stick together' now bitches better bow." The song also caught heat from conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh who interpreted the lyrics to "Bow Down" as Beyonce saying she was bowing down to her husband, Jay-Z. "Bow Down / I Been ...

Phil Ramone and Danielle Evin: Dog Ears Music: Volume 256
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Dog Ears Music: Volume 256 Rubén González (Buena Vista Social Club)Pioneering Afro-Cuban jazz pianist Rubén González was born in central Cuba just after World War I. The master's original trajectory was set for a career in medicine, but by the '40s he dove deep into Havana's music scene. After lining up with Mongo Santamaría, Arsenio Rodriguez and the Orquestra de los Hermanos, Luis "Lili" Martínez, and Percuchín, González enjoyed an eventual three-decade run with the father of the cha-cha-cha, Enrique Jorrin. When Jorrin died in 1987, González retired from the ivories. It wasn't until band leader/producer Juan de Marcos González tapped him to join his two projects, the Afro-Cuban All Stars and the Buena Vista Social Club, that González achieved global renown. The maestro went on to release a handful-plus of solo gems before his passing in 2003. Revisit Rubén González with "Pueblo Nuevo," from the 1997 Buena Vista Social Club collection. MTV News - over 4 years
“We picked rap because we know rappers,” Bun says, of choosing rappers for the coloring book.By Maurice Bobb Countless rappers claim that they love the kids, but Southern rap legend Bun B is taking things one step further: he’s creating a coloring book for children. “We picked rap because we know rappers,” Bun told RapFix, on why the coloring book features rappers instead of animals on a farm, or make believe characters. "Shea Serrano had a great idea. I tried not to mess it up. I think we got something special here.” The UGK representer recently started a new Tumblr, Bun B's Jumbo Coloring And Rap Activity Tumblr, ahead of the upcoming coloring book for children, Bun B's Jumbo Coloring And Rap Activity Book. Swishahouse Archived At Rice University: Slim Thug, Paul Wall Proud To Make History
MTV News - over 4 years
By Maurice Bobb Hip-hop was officially put on notice by Houston recording label Swishahouse back in 2005, when its biggest triumvirate, Mike Jones, Paul Wall and Slim Thug, exploded onto the Billboard charts with the seminal hit, “Still Tippin’,” which was originally released on the imprint’s compilation album, The Day Hell Broke Loose 2. Now Swishahouse, one of the pioneers of H-Town’s signature "chopped and screwed" sound, is the first hip-hop label to have its materials archived by Rice University's Center for Engaged Research and Collaborative Learning (CERCL), part of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research. The memorabilia, which includes music from the early days of Swishahouse, vintage pictures and posters, will chronicle the origin and achievements of the label for past, present and future scholarly hip-hop aficionados. “We are delighted to be able to initiate this effort with the materials brought to us by Swishahouse," Anthony Pinn, the Professor of Humanities and Relig ...

New Video: The Tontons, 'Golden'
MTV News - over 4 years
The Tontons go from the great outdoors to the green screen in their new video for "Golden." The Tontons may hail from Houston, but in their new video for "Golden," Asli Omar looks like she just caught the first flight home from New York Fashion Week. In fact, the indie frontwoman's "Drive"-worthy tiger-print shirt and a patterned skirt could make even Ryan (Hey, girl) Gosling blush! Rawr! No pressure, boys. Watch The Tontons' "Golden" video after the jump. The video finds Omar singing and dancing like everyone's watching as her bandmates set up behind her, which gives the group plenty of time to get all their knob-twists juuuust right. While the band doesn’t move much, the backdrop matches Omar’s motion, heading from the forest to an underground lair thanks to a green screen and some old-school special effects -- wait...we think we recognize those rocks from a "Star Trek" episode. While we've compared the indie act to Metric, the group's energetic rock has a home in plenty ...

CD reviews we couldn’t fit into the paper — from Two Door Cinema Club, LeCrae
Roanoke.com - over 4 years
TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB “Beacon” (Glassnote) Two Door Cinema Club blasted onto the airwaves in 2010 with its debut “Tourist History.” The group’s wistful and perfectly constructed ditties about youth and love lodged them firmly in the indie set and spread optimism through the hearts of losers and geeks with a positive love song, “Something Good Can Work.” With its second album “Beacon,” the Northern Ireland trio keeps that flame alive. The band continues its shoe-gazing style but with added twists. There’s an electro spin on some of the tracks, showing the boys are capable of concocting more than guitar riffs, and they’ve gained more swagger since the release of their debut. Precision is key with Two Door Cinema Club songs and they never miss a beat throughout “Beacon.” First single “Sleep Alone” pulsates with a steady drumbeat and is melancholic and full of yearning as Alex Trimble sings, “Hold me close/I’ve never been this far from home.” And “Handshake” is interestingly punct ...
