Woodlawn: Can Jesus Fix Race Relations?
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Woodlawn tells the true story of race, rivalry and religion within the confines of Birmingham Alabama's Woodlawn High School, the last school in Birmingham to integrate. The story follows wonder kid athlete "Touchdown" Tony Nathan (portrayed by talented newcomer Caleb Castille), as his gridiron skills breathe new life into the wildly unsuccessful Woodlawn football team. Solid performances by Nicholas Bishop, Jon Voight, Sean Astin, C. Thomas Howell and Sherri Shepherd (in a refreshing dramatic role), as well as powerful action shots from the gritty football field, give Woodlawn the Hollywood action movie feel that makes you forget it's a Christian movie. Oh, but Jesus does make an appearance, in a most fascinating way. As Birmingham stood divided and torn by race and rival football teams, an unlikely evangelist stepped in to spread the message of one God and one love. The film is directed by brothers Andrew and Jon Erwin. I recently sat down with Andrew Erwin to ...

Tales of The Hitcher -- The Long Version
Huffington Post - over 3 years
It's odd the way the mind works, making random connections. The other day, I was flipping past the Hallmark Channel. That made me think of a Hallmark Hall of Fame production from 15 years ago that I only caught the end of and had been very impressed by. It was called The Love Letter and starred Campbell Scott and Jennifer Jason Leigh. (Based on a short story that, from what little of the plot I saw, made it seem along the lines of the later feature film, The Lake House, with a mystical love affair over many years through the exchange of letters.) I went on Netflix to rent it - but it was only available to save, not watch. Either it's not available on DVD yet, or Netflix hasn't gotten around to ordering it yet. Whoever's responsible, I hope they fix this. But I digress. But then, this whole long tale is pretty much going to be a long digression. So, I guess it fits. Anyway, all of this, from flipping past the Hallmark Channel to The Love Letter to Jennifer Jason Leigh got me to ...

Huffington Post - over 4 years
"Red Dawn" will arrive in theaters on Nov. 21 with a thick coat of dust and a bunch of before-they-were-famous performances from its star actors. The remake first went into production in 2008 and started filming in 2009, long before Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson helped lead "Thor," "Marvel's The Avengers" and "The Hunger Games" to box-office glory. Like the original film, the "Red Dawn" trailer focuses on the Wolverines, a ragtag group of teens and 20-somethings who wind up being America's last hope when North Korea decides to take over half the country. (Just go with this: In the original film it was the Soviet Union; in the first "Red Dawn" cut, it was China.) Guns, explosions, heroics and campfires follow, with Hemsworth's Jed Eckert leading the way and taking care of his little brother, played by Josh Peck. (Adrianne Palicki, Isabel Lucas, Hutcherson and Tom Cruise's son, Connor, all come along for the ride as well.) It should be noted that the original "Red Dawn" -- which ...
