The Women Of 'SNL' Share Show Secrets
Huffington Post - about 2 years
To celebrate the 40th anniversay of "Saturday Night Live," Glamour magazine hosted a reunion with 17 of the most memorable female cast members to talk about everything from their first nervewracking auditions to playing their most recognizable characters. Yes, those tryouts do sound terrifying: Kristen Wiig: "Auditioning for SNL is the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life. It was terrifying." Cheri Oteri: "I got food poisoning the night before my audition. But even with no sleep, I could’ve danced with two broken legs. It’s that adrenaline." On writing parts for women, by women: Tina Fey: "It’s understood that everyone comes in and has to write for themselves. That’s the difference between getting handed the part of the stewardess and getting to play what you think is funny. You’re not going to stay up all night to give yourself one wife line." Rachel Dratch: "When I came up in comedy, you had to gender-neutralize yourself for good roles. If you thought of yourself ...

Why I Love the 'F' Word: How Having a Daughter Changed My Language and My Life
Huffington Post - about 3 years
I used to never use the "F" word. This was back in the 1990s, when I cared more about respecting social norms. I was a new-ish lawyer working at a big law firm, and I wanted to fit in. It wasn't like lady lawyers were unheard of, but they certainly weren't running the show. It was clear that the women who made it the farthest were the ones who acted in a way that prevented their gender from getting noticed too much in either direction -- something that male lawyers never had to worry about, incidentally. Using the "F" word would have drawn attention in the wrong way. My career wasn't the only thing that would have suffered. Back then, if you asked any man if he'd be interested in dating a woman who wasn't afraid to throw around the "F" word, he would have shot back with not just no, but f*ck, no. A lady lawyer who wasn't afraid to use the "F" word was hard-pressed to hold onto anything. Avoiding the "F" word wasn't a conscious decision on my part. Rather, I accepted the game that ...

A Real Housewife Gets Real Funny in Off-Broadway's "NEWSical the Musical"
Huffington Post - about 3 years
It's very rare to see an Off-Broadway show in New York have special guest stars but on Monday night, I was one of the privileged few invited to the opening night of Real Housewives of Atlanta star and Grammy Award Winner Kandi Burruss' two week run in NEWSical the Musical and boy, was I glad I got the invite. NEWSical, written by Rick Crom, is the long-running Off-Broadway musical comedy that lampoons everyone in the news from Miley Cyrus to The Pope in 90 minutes of hilarious skits and songs that update as quickly as the news changes. It's a news magazine of sorts (think more along the lines of The Daily Show than 60 Minutes) that's ever changing and always hilarious. In 2012, the show began to introduce celebrity guest stars. Since then blogger Perez Hilton, SNL alum Cheri Oteri, Emmy Award Winner Jackee Harry, Broadway's original Annie Andrea McArdle and Latoya Jackson have all jumped in on the fun for short term runs -- but the results haven't been as hilarious as Monday night whe ...

'SNL' Scorecard: Lady Gaga Dials It Down (Mostly)
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Lady Gaga had been the musical guest on “SNL” twice before last night, the last being back in May of 2011. On that last appearance, she showed up in a couple of sketches during that Justin Timberlake-hosted show and really overdid her performance. As in “the more I overact and ham it up, the funnier I will be.” Thankfully, it appears that someone explained to her that wasn’t necessary, because she, comparatively, really dialed it back for last night's episode -- which resulted in the most consistent show of the season so far. Sketch of the Night “4th Grade Talent Show” (John Milhiser, Lady Gaga, Aidy Bryant) First, it’s nice to see John Milhiser break through, finally, and it’s great that it’s with something that isn’t a just a disposable cultural reference. Watching the parents at their daughter’s dance recital act out what the daughter was supposed to be doing onstage is such a great idea that I can’t believe this hasn’t already aired on “SNL.” It feels like something that Will Fer ...

31 'Celebrities' Who Are Only Famous To People Who Live In New York
Huffington Post - over 3 years
1. Dr. Zizmor Who he is: the sphinx-like dermatologist who has fixed faces that have launched a thousand C trains. His shitty clip-art, photoshopped ads haven’t changed in the 12 years I’ve lived here. His trademark: his “Thank you, Dr. Z!!!!” tagline. 2. Robin Byrd Who she is: A former porn actress who has hosted a late-night cable access show that’s been running since 1977 featuring local strippers. It’s only on in Manhattan public access, and has been in reruns since 1998. Her national fame moment: Cheri Oteri impersonated her on a Saturday Night Live sketch parody of the show.

22 'SNL' Cast Members Recall The Audition That Impressed Lorne Michaels — Or Didn't
Business Insider - over 3 years
Lorne Michaels has seen thousands of comedians perform during his nearly 38 years as "Saturday Night Live" creator and executive producer. But only a lucky few make it from the stage of local comedy clubs to the coveted "SNL" cast member gig. The New York Times' Dave Itzkoff interviewed 22 past and present cast members who discussed the show's famously nerve-wracking audition process. The main point of anxiety? Lorne Michaels doesn't laugh during auditions. Jimmy Fallon: In makeup, they go, “Hey, Jimmy, some advice: Lorne Michaels doesn’t laugh when you audition. So don’t let that throw you.” Then the audio guy, he goes, “Hey, little advice — Lorne doesn’t like to laugh.” I’m like, “O.K.” Then Marci [Klein, a longtime “SNL” producer] comes out: “Jimmy, they’re ready for you. But hey, a little advice for you. If Lorne doesn’t laugh, be cool.” I’m like, what is this guy’s problem? He’s doing a comedy show. Why does he not like to laugh? Andy Samberg: The only person I for su ...

Mike Ryan: Why You Should Stop Saying 'SNL' Is In Trouble
Huffington Post - over 3 years
It's hard not to assume that the overwhelming majority of people who write stories about "Saturday Night Live" either don't watch "SNL" on a regular basis or don't have a clue how the show works. Or both. That's really the only explanation I can find for the proliferation of headlines this week referencing a "crisis" that requires a "miracle" to solve, "upheavals," another "crisis," and an "exodus" that the show may not "survive." All this because three members of a 14-person cast decided to leave the show. On the scale of "SNL" crises over the past 38 seasons, this one strikes me as decidedly underweight. Yes: Bill Hader, Fred Armisen and Jason Sudeikis are longstanding veterans of the show and will be missed. (And, no, I'm not forgetting that Seth Meyers is leaving the show in December, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.) The only sure bet any "SNL" cast member can make is that one day, he or she will no longer be on "SNL." This is not a "crisis"; this is ju ...

Kate McKinnon's Favorite 'SNL' Women
Huffington Post - over 3 years
"SNL" hotshot Kate McKinnon chatted with NBC's Janine Brady over drinks at 30 Rock, and revealed that not only is the famed sketch show her dream job, but cited the funny women on the show in the past that inspired her. McKinnon, best known for her impressions of Ellen DeGeneres and Ann Romney on "SNL," said, "When I started watching, it was '96-'97, and it was the Cheri Oteri, Ana Gasteyer, Molly Shannon era." "I'd do anything with them. I would clean their houses," she joked. Check out the interview above to see McKinnon talk about her pre-"SNL" career aspirations and her audition for the show.

Beth Lapides: Hand-to-Hand: Comedy and Combat
Huffington Post - about 4 years
The Pentagon just announced it's lifting the ban on woman going to the front lines and engaging in hand-to-hand combat. I know this is something that's supposedly good for women, and something that women in the military want, but it's something I have such mixed feeling about. Oddly, one of those feelings is gratitude. Because it reminds me why, after 25 years, I'm still so committed to hosting and producing UnCabaret. The news sent me back to when, years ago, the issue of allowing women on the front lines first came up. I was just beginning comedy career and was performing in what, at the time, was a fashion-forward choice: men's suits. Partly, I loved the suits for the pockets. Partly, I loved them for the power they bestowed. Partly, I enjoyed the focus on my work which the ease of a uniform provided -- much like combat gear. And then, the issue of women being allowed to fight on the front lines came up. And I started to wonder: Is this where the women's movement has ...

Paula Froelich: The Daily 'Fox & Friends' Roundup: I Watch So You Don't Have To!
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Fox & Friends Roundup Wed., Sept 19, 2012 Ah, another morning with Steve Doocy, Gretchen Carlson and Brian Kilmeade. As a freelancer, I'm prone to sleeping late. But when I realized I had slept away the entire morning of summer, I got concerned -- and realized I needed a reason to get up. My fix? Fox & Friends. While most people wondered why I decided to live-tweet the hysterical, yapping morning show of the right from the conventions through the election, to me it made perfect sense. I love a good comedy -- and that show is like watching a daily installment of a Christopher Hayden Guest mocumentary. You've got Steve Doocy -- affectionately referred to by chirons on screen as "The Dooce" -- Seriously. Either someone over at Fox News really doesn't like the guy, or maybe... they just don't know that "The Dooce" is a homophonic synonym for a bowel movement. During the DNC, there was a clip of The Dooce flitting around the grounds of the NASCAR museum on a segue wi ...
