Carole Montgomery: WAIT, I'm Not Dead, I'm Just Over 50
Huffington Post - over 3 years
I live in midtown Manhattan, right next to the building that will have the $90 million apartment in it. Construction has been going on for almost 4 years now. When I was a young woman in my 20's, I was always nervous passing a group of construction guys on their lunch break because of the cat calls I would receive. Didn't matter if I was dressed up or not, the calls kept a coming. Oh, how it angered me. "Hey, I am not an object, I am a HUMAN BEING!" I would yell to them. I am now a 55-year-old woman and I pass construction guys every day as I leave my apartment. Not a peep, not a look. Zip, nada. What I would give for a cat call NOW! Women my age are invisible. I could walk down the block naked today and the most I could hope for would be "Hey Lady, cover yourself up, your nipples are getting bloody from scraping the sidewalk." And I'd be GRATEFUL, someone noticed me. The first time I read Harry Potter I remember thinking how cool would it be to have an invisibility ...

Linda Flanagan: What I Found in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
The Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue arrived last week in the mail, and there was Kate Upton, smiling distractedly, mouth open. She must have been cold, posing on a boat next to a glacier in Antarctica, and wearing nothing under her (unzipped) white ski jacket but a tiny bikini bottom. Her eyes say "come hither," but she's probably fantasizing about a space heater. Some 18 million women "read" the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, according to research carried out by the magazine. Given that the weekly's circulation is just 3.1 million, 77% of whom are male, hordes of women must pick up this issue on the newsstand or sneak through their partners'. This makes sense to me, for I've been a closet consumer of the swimsuit issue most of my life. Though pitched to men, the annual photo spread of unfathomably lovely women is an insistent reminder to most females of all that they could be, if only they'd put in the effort. Behold these magnificent specimens of creation! (And ...

Caryn Brooks: Blondes Might Have More Fun But Brunettes Have More Crowns
Huffington Post - about 4 years
As Olivia Culpo took her predictable winner's walk down the runway as the first Miss USA to win Miss Universe in 15 years, she was -- as they all are-- smiling, crying and fidgeting to keep her crown in place. But something else was different. The 20-year-old Boston University sophomore is a brown-haired, brown-eyed woman who looks more like Salma Hayek than Gwyneth Paltrow. This could be a symbol of progress. It could be that as a culture we are broadening our image of physical perfection to be more inclusive and representative of society. Many perhaps were expecting a stereotypical American - blond-haired and blue-eyed in the mold of Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Cheryl Tiegs, Kate Hudson, Kirsten Dunst and Amanda Seyfried. But perusing past Miss USA winners, all of them genetically blessed no matter what the color of their hair, an interesting trend emerges. Since 2000, eight Miss USA winners (including Culpo) have been brunettes, four have been blondes and one ...

Myrdith Leon Mccormack: Falling for Vanessa Bell Calloway At ABFF
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Since the age of six, I knew what I wanted to be. Fashion, beauty... you name it. I wanted to be in the midst of it all. I recall pulling pictures from magazines of Beverly Johnson, Iman, Brooke Shields, Cheryl Tiegs, and Lauren Hutton. To know and be able to identify your place in life at an early age is quite rewarding. The challenge is laying out the plan that will get you to your final destination. You must strategize your every move, so that your path is clear. For people of color, it has never been an easy path. From the beginning, our roads have been paved with hardship, difficulty, and for some, ultimately success. So, when I meet a person of color that has been able to jump through the hurdles of life, and to come out with minor bruises, I applaud them. When I met Vanessa Bell Calloway, I wanted to give her a standing ovation. She is an extraordinary actress, dancer, philanthropist, motivator, mentor, wife, and mother. Being an actor is not a mere job you obtain ...

'About Face': Aging Supermodels On 'The Greatest Adventure'
Huffington Post - over 4 years
When Timothy Greenfield-Sanders set out to make a documentary about aging supermodels, he probably didn’t expect to make a film about power. But there it is -- his documentary “About Face: Supermodels Then and Now,” which premieres on HBO July 30, is a portrait of beautiful women who enjoyed enormous acclaim at the height of their careers, and have found a different type of power altogether in aging, or perhaps in spite of it. “I was interested in the subject because I’m 60 and I’m fascinated by how one reinvents oneself as one gets old in a society that’s so youth oriented,” said Greenfield-Sanders, a photographer known for his iconic portraits of the famous and infamous, from presidents to porn stars, who began making documentaries 12 years ago. “How do you stay relevant? How do you combine all the things you learned and do something new and be in demand? When you look at the women in the film, their success was all based on beauty that fades,” he said. Greenfiel ...

Marcia G. Yerman: Dayle Haddon: 'Giving Back Makes Me Feel Young And Beautiful'
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
When I attended and live-blogged the 2012 Women in the World summit, I was surprised to find that Tweets from the handle of @dayleythought belonged to top model of the 1970s and 80s, Dayle Haddon. Ever the curious reporter, I did a quick search to find out what she was up to. I found the story of a personal evolution that is becoming more normative -- as women pioneer new ways to self-define and grow. Haddon was the brunette that broke through the blonde barricades when Cheryl Tiegs reigned as icon of the "All American" look. Hailing from Canada, Haddon's background in ballet led to modeling and acting. One of her top roles included Nick Nolte's girlfriend in North Dallas Forty, a look at the underside of professional football. Becoming a mother in her 20s, Haddon was 38 years old when her husband died unexpectedly. She was left without an economic base or source of income. She went back to the world of fashion and beauty, and was succinctly told that she was "over the h ...

David Cameron Reveals His Celebrity Crush
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
British Prime Minister David Cameron may be head-over-heels in love with his stylish wife, Samantha. But like every teen guy, he used to fancy another woman. Much to our delight, the PM got candid with Carol Vorderman for a recent interview with Tesco Magazine: Carol: So make us laugh, who was your first celebrity crush? David: I’m afraid, like everyone else, I think I had that poster of Cheryl Tiegs on my wall. That white mesh bare-all poster or the shiny pink bikini poster? Either way: amazing. Plus, Cameron's in luck -- seems like Tiegs finally feels the same! Upon hearing the prime minister's revelation, Tiegs told the The Daily Telegraph, "Oh my God! Andretti cruises through to another week on 'Celebrity Apprentice'
The Morning Call - Blogs - almost 5 years
Nazareth native Michael Andretti, son of legendary race car driver Mario Andretti, wasn't exactly in the driver's seat on Sunday night's "Celebrity Apprentice." But as a member a winning team, he coasted safely into another week on the NBC reality show starring Donald "You're Fired" Trump. So far, on the competition that sent home super model Cheryl Tiegs last week, the competing celebrities have been divided into two teams -- men verses women. Trump's challenge on week two: Create a show for Medieval Times, a dinner and entertainment venue in Lynhurst, N.J. The show had to include activities typical of a day when men battled in jousting matches to win the hand of a fair lady. A live audience would pick the winner. Both teams decided on spoofs, hoping to win the hearts of the audience with humor. But it was clear from the planning stages that the men's team would have an upperhand, despite being down one humorous player.  Comedian Adam Carolla was hosting a wedding the day when th ...
