Ryan Reynolds Drops Big Project
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Today in news about movies you forgot even existed: Ryan Reynolds has dropped plans to star in a remake of "Highlander." Reynolds was first attached to the film back in June of 2012. This is just the latest blow to the "Highlander" remake: back in November of 2012, director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo left the "Highlander" remake after spending a year developing the project. According to Deadline.com, the split had to do with the fact that Fresnadillo had a different approach in mind for "Highlander" 2.0 than Summit Entertainment, the studio backing the film. As TheWrap noted in its exclusive report about Reynolds' departure, that "Highlander" has a clean slate is "beneficial for the project, as a new director will be able to cast a new leading man rather than inherit a previous filmmaker's decision." "Highlander" was first released in 1986 with Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert as stars. The film focused on immortal swordsman who could only be killed via decapitation. ...

Everyone Else Might Star In 'Expendables 3'
Huffington Post - over 4 years
"The Expendables 2" doesn't come out until Aug. 17, but that hasn't prevented producer Avi Lerner from speculating about "The Expendables 3." In a new interview with Total Film, Lerner says that anyone who doesn't appear in "The Expendables 2" will likely be sought for the next entry in the franchise. “We’ve approached Clint Eastwood to be one of the guys, we’ve got a character in mind for him," Lerner said. "We’re talking to Harrison Ford. [And we want] Wesley Snipes when he comes back from prison. I’ll give you one more name, we’ve got Nicolas Cage to play [one of the characters]." If that sounds familiar, it's because you remember that Cage was rumored to be involved in "The Expendables 2." Moviehole.net reported Cage's involvement, along with Christopher Lambert, Taylor Lautner and Christian Slater. Unfortunately, none of those actors actually wound up appearing. “I haven’t really pursued that,” Cage said last year when presented with the "Expendables" rumors. “I ...

Photos: Victorian Fashions in British Costume Drama
BBC Blogs- America - over 4 years
BBC America’s forthcoming show Copper (premiering Sunday, August 19 at 10/9c) examines life in NYC set in the 1860s. The majority of the costumes – 600 dresses, frock coats and union suits – were custom built versus relying on picked over rental shops. The folks over at Gothamist have put together a flip book of some cool looks from the show in Fabulous Fashions of 19th Century NYC Revisited in Copper.  We’re going to follow their lead and take a look at 19th Century Great Britain, chronicled in Victorian era films and mini-series! Scott Mendelson: Review: The Dark Knight Rises (2012) Continues the Curse of Comic Book Threequels
Huffington Post - over 4 years
The Dark Knight Rises 2012 165 minutes Rated PG-13 First and foremost, I cannot decide at the moment if The Dark Knight Rises (trailer) is a 'better film' than Spider-Man 3, Batman Forever, and/or X-Men: The Last Stand.  The fact that I have to outright state as much should tell you what a comparative disappointment this film is.  Overall, its many storytelling flaws bring the picture down, offering only engaging acting, entertaining character interaction, and the kind of empty-headed (but oft impressive) action spectacle associated with more conventional blockbusters. It is a hodgepodge of several classic Batman stories squished into one chaotic narrative that ends up resembling a mash-up of Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Rocky III. There are moments of emotional engagement in the first third and the final moments pack an appropriate wallop.  But the film frankly drags for much of its middle 90 minutes on its way to a surprisingly unremarkable climax.  Save f ...

Geoff Cox’s guide to new DVDs: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and more
The Bucks Herald - over 4 years
WHEN I booked into THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (12: Twentieth Century Fox) at my local multiplex in February, I didn’t expect any surprises. This manipulative charmer does exactly what it says on the posters and TV ads. It may be slightly predictable, yet this poignant tale never strays from satisfying, feel-good magic. Seven English pensioners looking for a fresh start are drawn to an advert for an hotel in the Indian city of Jaipur and plan to spend their retirement there. Lured by the promise of cheap luxury at the establishment of the title, the hotel, run by ever-optimistic manager Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel), turns out to be a dump. Sonny’s enthusiasm wins them over and the pensioners’ shared experiences and their own adventures in the city has a transformative effect. Muriel (Maggie Smith) won’t eat anything that she can’t pronounce, but her xenophobia mellows, while Douglas (Bill Nighy), henpecked by wife Jean (Penelope Wilton), finds himself and Evelyn (Judi Dench) is fac ...

Marvel’s Greatest Hits & Misses
On The Box - almost 5 years
Avengers Assemble is out this week and it’s a triumph – the best Marvel film so far. In fact Marvel have done a pretty good job in brining their comic book properties to the big screen. Not always, it’s easier to remember hte triumphs than the failures. But with that in mind, let’s take at look at some of Marvel’s other successes… and failures…   Heroes Iron Man (2008) We need an actor who can portray self-righteous arrogance while still being likable and not unbearable….hmmm…tough call.  Oh wait, no it’s not.  Step forward Robert Downey Jr. perfectly cast as everyone’s favourite billionaire playboy philanthropist.   Boasting an excellent AC/DC soundtrack, and some seriously sexy gadgetry, Iron Man was sleek, funny and most importantly fun. Thor (2011) April 2011 saw the arrival of the hammer-wielding, blond-barnetted son of Asgard, Thor.  With its campy aesthetic and huge sets (not to mention Thor’s preposterous haircut and bulging biceps), this could easily ha ...

Let's Name Every Easter-Themed Movie You Could Possibly Watch This Sunday
Movie Line - almost 5 years
There's a movie for every special occasion/holiday, but when it comes to Easter you've got a lot of very, very different viewing options. Why go the traditional bunnies and kiddies route (a la Hop) or take a more pious tack (Passion of the Christ, anyone?) when there are so many other, less predictable ways to celebrate? I'll start with a few to whet your whistle as you dip into the chocolate basket this Sunday... Easter Parade (1948) Fred Astaire + Judy Garland + hats make Easter about winning that special guy/gal's heart and not about, you know, Jesus. -- Critters 2: The Main Course (1988) Those aren't Easter Eggs -- they're Critter eggs! Hunt carefully. -- Mallrats (1995) "You know what?? THERE IS NO EASTER BUNNY!" Thanks a lot, Kevin Smith. -- Resurrection (1999) "All the victims were 33 years old -- the same age as Christ when he died." This forgotten gem stars Christopher Lambert -- who also co-wrote the script! MAKE YOUR EASTER SUNDAY A HORROR ...
