100 Jobs in One Year
The Street - almost 4 years
By Claire Gordon A year ago, Dave Herman was just another one of the thousands of struggling actors in New York City, picking up odd jobs to make ends meet. Today, he's a master of productivity, a philosopher of motivation, a self-appointed self-help guru, and full-time brand ambassador. What happened in 2012? Herman had 100 jobs. Millions of Americans would be thankful to find just one job right now, and Herman now knows how it's done. To complete his project -- 100 jobs in one year -- Herman was a night receptionist, an electrician, a script reader, a bartender, a newspaper boy, a dog walker, and a professional laugher. He also handed out a lot of fliers. With the help of a couple of temp agencies, the website TaskRabbit (where people advertise odd jobs), and friends, Herman completed the challenge, 20 minutes before midnight, as a correspondent on "New Year's Eve with Carson Daly." ...

Barrel-Aged Fernet at Whey Bar: Thank You, God
The Portland Mercury - over 4 years
Ox—the Argentine-inspired, rave-reviewed, meat-centric Denton creation that has already made a name for itself from its epic grill—has somehow gotten even better. Their new backyard watering hole, dubbed Whey Bar (I'm still not exactly sure why) opened August 14, boasting the cocktail menu, limited wine by the glass, and bottled beer. A small selection of snacks grace the menu, making the Whey Bar a logical prelude to the coma-inducing dinners served next door. And did I mention barrel-aged Fernet on tap? How this has taken so long to exist in a town where restaurants are in large part supported by people who work in restaurants, I have no idea—Fernet Branca being a common industry shot of choice, this is borderline genius and will probably make owners Greg and Gabby Denton into millionaires by the end of the summer. At $9/shot, it's by no means cheap, but you pretty much forget the value of those green bills in your wallet after a few of them... and this stuff is delicious. It's st ...

Beam & Anchor's Hypo-Bridge Debut
The Portland Mercury - over 4 years
Since when can one of Portland's most beautiful showrooms and workshop collectives be found almost directly under the Fremont Bridge? Since six weeks ago, apparently. The new Beam & Anchor (2710 N Interstate Ave) offers everything from custom furniture to really rad pocket knives to apothecary to artwork... and hosts the workshops of many of the featured artists/artisans directly above the retail space. Driving or walking or riding the yellow line by the limited signage, one might think (at least, I thought) the tiny building housed either a couple of cars or a very small bar, but inside is a palpably creative center for these resident "makers" to work and share with the lucky public that takes the time to investigate. The shop is magically lit through old windows facing N Interstate and the train yards of the Eastside Industrial District, while plants and dark colors warm the space and showcase the almost exclusively earthy colors of Beam & Anchor's wares. I find most simil ...

No Such Thing as Too Many Cupcakes
The Portland Mercury - almost 5 years
Yes, there are an appalling number of cupcake bakeries in town. I would have questioned the sanity of baker Jax, who just opened her first stationary cupcake stand at the Mississippi Marketplace food cart pod last Saturday... but this girl makes damn good cake. The Hungry Heart kiosk was doling out free treats all morning as a grand opening promotion, so I brought a four pack to a friend making a pretty perfect breakfast with lots of strong coffee. Jax changes her menu seasonally and puts out some excellent flavor pairings. My favorite was a chocolate cupcake with cocoa nibs, dolce de leche frosting and a sprinkle of Maldon sea salt on top, and the Horchata special was a close second. It's a feat to play with flavors like those and with so much frosting without registering as overbearingly sugary, but this lady pulls it off. Small cupcakes speaking volumes in assertive flavors—as far as I'm concerned, there's room in Portland for competition like this. Clare G ...
