The search brought Dante (and two other children) to “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2005, where he got a lesson in joke-telling from Leno. Dante’s joke of choice, he admits 11 years later, was a silly joke that his mom had found in a book. What do you ...

It Isn't Just About Chappelle
Huffington Post - over 3 years
This isn't just about Chappelle. It was bordering on an argument now. I felt my muscles getting tight as I tried to keep myself from yelling out in frustration. We were stomping across the parking lot to our cars, much earlier than expected after Dave Chappelle decided to leave the stage at the Comcast theater. I went with my friend and a couple but the conversation we were having was as though we had left two different theaters. Was I crazy? Was I the only one who had seen the way the night escalated? My friend and I were one of the few Black people at the Chappelle show in Hartford and it was quickly becoming clear to me, that was an important fact. The couple that attended with us, Ray and Hannah, were White. "He's a comedian, what did he expect?" Ray asked, over emphasizing his words the way he did when he was trying not to slur. "Respect." I damn near snarled... I pointed out that there was a larger racial context, that a crowd of majority White patrons yelling at a single ...

Mike Dunn: It Wasn't a 'Meltdown': Here's What Really Happened at Dave Chappelle's Show in Hartford
Huffington Post - over 3 years
It's been described as a meltdown, but it really wasn't. A meltdown is usually considered an event where someone goes unhinged, becomes emotionally unstable and makes crazy decisions. At no point during Dave Chappelle's August 29 show at the Oddball Festival in Hartford, CT was he ever anything other than in measured control of his actions. I was part of the audience at the show. Dave Chappelle was, of course, the closer for the night. Although the show was billed as a festival, Chappelle was clearly the headliner. As a result, much of the crowd showed up midway through, missing good performers like Al Madrigal and Kristen Schaal (one of the first acts of bad decision making of the night on the part of the crowd ). Later on, the crowd sat patiently through the other large act of the night, the Flight of the Conchords, but it was clear that they were waiting for Dave. He literally needs no introduction. During a brief intermission following the Flight of the Conchords, th ...

'In Living Color' receives TV Land honor
KXLY - almost 5 years
"In the early days, TV was in black and white," Whoopi Goldberg said as she presented the Groundbreaking Award to the cast of "In Living Color" at the TV Land Awards earlier this month. "But let's be honest," she went on. "It was really more white than black. But in 1990, a new show changed the face of television, not to mention comedy." Created by actor/writer Keenen Ivory Wayans, the sketch comedy series "In Living Color" ran on Fox from 1990-1994, and "brought a new multiculturalism to the primetime variety genre, which basically means there was nothing like it on television anywhere," continued Goldberg. "With a bold, comedic edge, hip-hop energy and streetwise sensibility, it not only shattered stereotypes, it shattered everybody's idea of what sketch comedy was and could be, and more importantly, what it was supposed to look like," she said. "It was the ultimate water-cooler show because when you see old white men sitting around talking about 'two snaps up,' it mean ...
