Fun, Flirty Reads for Valentine's Day
Huffington Post - about 3 years
It's that time again when the whole world is obsessed with love.  These romantic reads will get you in the mood for romance and/or will be an excellent accompaniment to a box of chocolates and a bottle of wine. They might also give you some (naughty) ideas of how to celebrate Valentine's Day. While a few of these titles are pure escapist fantasy, there are few stories of real-life romance, too.   R is for Rebel by Megan Mulry Abigail Heyworth, rebel heiress, has spent the past ten years in a relationship (with a woman!) and traveling the world doing good. Eliot Cranbrooke is a warm, funny and sophisticated American businessman. As they keep meeting through family and friends from Paris to middle America, their relationship gets oh-so intimate and oh-so complicated. This is a sexy, flirty, humorous, emotional and epic contemporary romance. Oh, and the lingerie...don't get Eliot and I started on that!         At Any Price by Brenna Aubrey Mia Strong is a young med student ...

Modesto man convicted in arson deaths can pursue appeal
LATimes - almost 5 years
A Modesto man sentenced to life in prison for setting a house fire that killed his three tenants has provided enough evidence of his innocence to pursue federal appeals, a U.S. magistrate ruled Thursday. Federal Magistrate Michael J. Seng, who examined the evidence against George Souliotes during a four-day hearing in Fresno in January, concluded that no reasonable juror would have found the Greek immigrant guilty of arson given the state of the evidence now. Fire scientists have discredited evidence that was used to convict Souliotes, and the state has conceded that it no longer can prove the deadly 1997 blaze was deliberately set. "This court lacks confidence" in the guilty verdict, Seng wrote. A federal judge must review and uphold Seng’s conclusion before Souliotes, 71, can challenge his conviction on other grounds, including incompetent legal representation. Michelle Jones, 31, and her children -- Daniel Jones Jr., 8, and Amanda, 3 -- perished in the fire. RELATED: A ...

LATimes - almost 5 years
Time magazine's ninth annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world hits newsstands Thursday. Among them are some fashion trendsetters, including Sarah Burton, who took over as creative director at Alexander McQueen and gowned Kate Middleton for the British royal wedding last year; that same Kate Middleton, now the duchess of Cambridge; her sister Pippa; Rihanna; and Sarah Blakely, the billionaire founder of Spanx. The writers are pretty interesting too: Sarah Jessica Parker on Burton, Katie Couric on Blakely, Stella McCartney on Rihanna. Jones put an advertisement in the local Brisbane music paper, Time Off, looking for a suitable singer. Darren Hayes responded to the ad and became their singer. Hayes got tired of performing other people's songs and he was ready to quit Red Edge, whereas Jones wanted to create his own music. Both decided to leave the band, and began to pursue a career together, marking the beginning of Savage Garden. The other half of the pair, Darren Hayes, wrote the lyrics and melodies, performed all of the vocals, while Jones mostly provided instrumental backing.
