Geoffrey R. Stone: The Second Amendment
Huffington Post - about 4 years
The following statement, which UCLA law professor Adam Winkler and I crafted, was signed by more than fifty of the nation's most distinguished constitutional law professors. The statement refutes unfounded claims that the Second Amendment precludes Congress from enacting legislation to reduce gun violence in the United States. Although these scholars hold widely divergent views on constitutional interpretation, and often fiercely disagree on a broad range of constitutional issues, they all agree on this question. The statement was submitted today to Congress in anticipation of the beginning of hearings on the proposed legislation. Statement of Professors of Constitutional Law: The Second Amendment and the Constitutionality of the Proposed Gun Violence Prevention Legislation Several proposed reforms to the nation's gun laws, including universal background checks and restrictions on high-capacity ammunition magazines and assault weapons, are now pending before Congress. Ask Sacto 911 crime Q&A: Have defendants been sentenced in 2010 Mack Road shooting?
The Sacramento Bee - over 4 years
Bee reporters answer questions about area crime news, trends and other issues. QUESTION: Did Darrel Miller and Torrey Adams ever get sentenced for the murder they committed on Mack Road? Submitted by: Papajoe, Sacramento ANSWER: Separate juries in June convicted Darrell Miller and Torrey Levarr Adams of second-degree murder in the Dec. 20, 2010 drive-by shooting death of 20-year-old Antonne Nelms. The Nelms shooting on Mack Road occurred six days after the highly publicized shootout at Fly Cuts and Styles barbershop on Stockton Boulevard in which a young mother was killed as she shielded her 2-year-old son. Miller was one of five men in the barbershop who were wounded that day. According to a story in The Bee, Miller was just out of the hospital when he, Adams, and a third man, Tyvone G. Allen, were traveling on Mack Road about 3 p.m. and Miller spotted someone who had injured him in a fight a year earlier. Adams, who was driving, stopped the car and bac ...

UCLA Comes Away Big Winner On MLB Signing Deadline Day
Bruins Nation - over 4 years
The MLB Draft signing deadline was at 2 p.m. PT on Friday and as the clock ticked down, all eyes were on Lucas Giolito. The right-hander was a possible number one overall pick before he injured his elbow in the spring, but still went in the first round to the Nationals. With a fastball that reached 100 mph, he was considered one of the top arms in the draft. He was also considered one of the toughest signs, asking for more than recommended for his slot and making it clear that he would be happy to honor his commitment to UCLA. When the clock struck 2 p.m. there was still no word of Giolito signing. Had the flamethrower really passed on the nearly $3 million the Nationals had to offer and instead chosen to go to UCLA? A few minutes later, the answer came in -- no. Giolito had signed with Washington for $2.925 million and would be heading to the pros, not Westwood. Understandably, many Bruins were heartbroken. After nabbing Gerrit Cole four years ago, the Bruins had pretty ...

MLB Draft Open Thread: Current And Future Bruins To Be Picked High
Bruins Nation - over 4 years
While the UCLA baseball team may have their focus on the postseason and next weekend's Super Regionals as they try to make it to Omaha for the College World Series, there is also something else going on -- the MLB Draft. Beginning today and continuing through Wednesday, the pro clubs will select high school and college kids and as one of the premier programs in the country, UCLA will have a lot of their guys involved. The biggest Bruin involved is a commit who UCLA is just hoping makes it to campus, but it is a little bit complicated. Lucas Giolito, a big right-hander who has touched 100 mph, was expected to be a top three overall pick and possibly the number one pick in the draft, but he injured his elbow and only made three starts this spring. That caused his stock to drop, but also complicating things are his money demands. With his demanding a lot of money, some teams could be scared off and pass on drafting him. He might still go in the top 10 and most still have him i ...

LATimes - almost 5 years
UCLA-bound Jame Kaprielian struck out 10 and threw the first no-hitter in the eight-year school history of Irvine Beckman in an 8-0 victory over Irvine Woodbridge. JSerra pulled out a 7-4, 10-inning victory over Servite. The Lions scored three runs in the top of the 10, keyed by a two-run single by Casey Worden. Darrell Miller Jr. had three hits for Servite. In the Pacific League, Crescenta Valley defeated Glendale, 16-0. Cole Currie struck out 10 in five innings. Can Silva had a double and single. Burbank defeated Muir, 12-1. John White had three hits. Baseball: Darrell Miller Jr. to sign with UCLA
LATimes - over 5 years
Catcher Darrell Miller Jr. of Anaheim Servite is set to sign with UCLA when he returns home from school on Wednesday, his father, Darrell Sr., said. The big question is whether UCLA will finally be able to keep a catcher from the pros. In 2009, they lost top prep standout Max Stassi for $1.5 million to the Athletics. This past August, they lost Austin Hedges of JSerra for $2.5 million to the Padres. Miller batted .545 for Servite and is also expected to receive attention from the pro ranks. -- Eric Sondheimer
