Artist Offers Bizarre Defense For His 'Racist' Chair Sculpture
Huffington Post - about 3 years
“He’s certainly not racist, and used to have a black boyfriend.” Such was the outdated defense of Norwegian provocteur Bjarne Melgaard, whose polyvinyl sculpture of a contorted black woman under a chair has sparked a firestorm of criticism this week. Perch well-known art patron Dasha Zhukova on the sculpture, and it becomes the center of one of the most infamous portraits of the art world, and a heated debate over what's abhorrent, what's art and what's both. The photograph, pictured above, appeared online this Monday on the Russian fashion website Buro 24/7. Almost immediately, the hashtag #racistchair was born on Twitter. Catching up with the #racistchair Twitterstorm. Russian Art Collecting Couple Buy Big
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Billionaire Roman Abramovich and his partner Dasha Zhukova -- otherwise known as the world's "it" art collecting couple -- have turned heads with their latest art investment. The two recently purchased a collection of over 40 works by Russia's priciest living artist, Ilya Kabakov, a group of paintings and installations ranging from $30 million to $60 million. The artworks, produced by Kabakov before he left Moscow for New York in 1987, were previously owned by U.S. collector John L. Stewart, who spent two years acquiring the massive estate. “It’s one of the largest Kabakov collections in the world,” said Emilia Kabakov, Ilya's wife and fellow artist, to Bloomberg. “It’s also the most outstanding in terms of quality and art-historical significance.” 'Broken Mirror, 1966' by Ilya Kabakov at the opening of the exhibition 'Russian Art from Private Collections: Borovikovsky to Kabakov' at the ABA Gallery May 10, 2012 in New York. ARTINFO: "Dreams of a Life," the Tragic True Story of an Improbably Forgotten Woman
Huffington Post - over 4 years
On January 25, 2006, the body of Joyce Vincent was found on the sofa in her housing project studio flat, which backed on to a busy shopping center in Wood Green, North London. The television was on and there were unopened Christmas presents on the floor beside her. She had been dead since December 2003 and the body was so badly decomposed that her identity could only be ascertained by comparing her dental records with a holiday photograph in which she was smiling. Zawe Ashton as Joyce Vincent in "Dreams of a Life." / Courtesy dreamsofalife.com A beautiful, popular, and once gregarious Londoner of Caribbean and Indian descent, Vincent had been 38 when she died. She had seemingly been forgotten about - by her friends, by her father and four sisters (with whom she apparently had no contact), and by the authorities whose job it was to collect her rent. The filmmaker Carol Morley discovered the Vincent case when she chanced upon a report of the grisly discovery in The Sun ...

Festival executives affected by the global financial crisis are delirious with numerous fashion houses acting as major underwriters and allow them to brand and control the press coverage on the red carpets, sometimes overshadowing the very films the festival is presenting.
