This 72-Year-Old Model Owned The Runway At London Fashion Week
Huffington Post - 2 days
Amidst the many models walking at London Fashion Week, one in particular stood out. Jan de Villeneuve, a 72-year-old model born in Ohio, ruled the runway during her walks for Simone Rocha and Osman.  “Life doesn’t end when you start getting a pension,” de Villeneuve told The Telegraph. “Older women love fashion too. I’ve always thought it would be nice if people of all ages, shapes and sizes were included because that’s more relevant to day-to-day life.”  De Villeneuve, who first began modeling in the ‘60s, told the outlet that she took some time off to raise her daughters before returning to the profession in 1988.  “I was quite conflicted as a young model about making money from how you look. I’d gone to university and had a good degree so thought, ‘Should I be doing this?’” she told The Telegraph. “I railed against it when I was younger but now I don’t think about it because now I look like an older lady. It was lovely this weekend to see there was interest in women of my ...

Judge orders bottled water delivered in Flint, Mich., in water crisis
Yahoo News - 4 months
(This version of the Nov. 10 story, corrects the name to Natural Resources Defense Council in paragraph 3) By David Bailey (Reuters) - A federal judge on Thursday ordered state and city officials to deliver bottled water directly to qualified residents in Flint, Michigan, where a water contamination crisis has made unfiltered tap water unsafe to drink since April 2014. Officials must deliver four cases of bottled water a week immediately unless they can prove a water filter is installed and properly maintained at a home or if residents opt out of a filter or deliveries, U.S. District Judge David Lawson said. The ruling came in a lawsuit filed by residents and advocacy groups Concerned Pastors for Social Action, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan.

Univision Delete Gawker Posts Amid Legal Pressure
Huffington Post - 6 months
Sept 10  - Univision Communications Inc said on Saturday it has deleted postings subject to active litigation against Gawker Media Group Inc to create a “clean slate” for the online publishing company acquired for $135 million in a bankruptcy auction last month. Gawker Media sought bankruptcy in June after facing a $140 million court judgment following an invasion of privacy lawsuit from former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, over the publication of excerpts from a sex tape. “Following our acquisition of assets from Gawker Media, we have decided to take down select articles that are the subject of pending litigation against the prior owners,” Univision said in a statement. “At this time of transition, the decision was based on a desire to have a clean slate as we look to support and grow the editorial missions of the acquired brands,” it said. A bankruptcy judge approved Univision’s winning bid in August following a bankruptcy auction a ...

Protests over shootings block roads in U.S. cities, arrests made
Yahoo News - 8 months
By Bryn Stole and David Bailey BATON ROUGE, La./MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - Protests against the shootings of two black men by police officers shut down main arteries in a number of U.S. cities on Saturday, leading to numerous arrests, scuffles and injuries in confrontations between police and demonstrators. Undeterred by heightened concerns about safety at protests after a lone gunman killed five police officers in Dallas Thursday night, organizers went ahead with marches in the biggest metropolis, New York City, and Washington D.C., the nation's capital, among other cities. It was the third straight day of widespread protests after the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling, 37, by police in Baton Rouge on Tuesday and the death of Philando Castile, 32, on Wednesday night in a St. Paul, Minnesota suburb, cities which both saw heated protests on Saturday.

Minnesota governor decries 'racism' after police shoot black man
Yahoo News - 8 months
ST. PAUL, Minn. (Reuters) - Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton said that he did not believe the black man shot dead by police on Wednesday during a routine traffic stop would have been treated that way if he had been white. "Would this have happened if the driver and the passengers were white? I don't think it would have," Dayton told reporters on Thursday. "This kind of racism exists and it's incumbent on all of us to vow and ensure that it doesn't continue to happen." (Reporting by David Bailey; Writing by Scott Malone; editing by Grant McCool)

Flint, Michigan's Poisoned Water Is Under Federal Investigation Following Disastrous Cost-Cutting Attempt
Huffington Post - about 1 year
(Reuters) - Federal officials are investigating the lead contamination of drinking water in Flint, Michigan, after the financially beleaguered city switched sources to save money, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney in Detroit said on Tuesday. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder apologized in late December for the state's mishandling of lead contamination of Flint's water supply and accepted the resignation of the state official whose department is responsible for overseeing water quality. The U.S. Attorney's Office is working closely with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to address the concerns of Flint residents and investigate the contamination of Flint's water supply, said Gina Balaya, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney. Balaya would not say whether the office was looking at possible criminal or civil violations and said the U.S. Attorney normally would not even confirm the existence of an investigation. "In light of the situation and the concerns of Flint resident ...

Black Lives Matter holds 'Black Xmas' protests in Minnesota, California
Yahoo News - about 1 year
By David Bailey BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (Reuters) - Black Lives Matter held demonstrations in Minnesota and California on Wednesday to protest police killings of unarmed blacks, dubbing the day "Black Xmas" to show it could affect the economy on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. "Black communities across the United States are taking brave actions to impede the flow of goods and commerce with peaceful protests to call for an immediate overhaul of the justice system," Black Lives Matter said in a statement on Facebook. "Instead of buying gifts to fuel this system, Black Xmas is a day of action." The loosely organized movement grew out of protests over police killings of black men in Ferguson, Missouri, New York and other cities.

Artist Sheena Rose Seeks To Challenge People (And Boundaries) With Her Work
Huffington Post - over 1 year
"When I was about 6 years old I started drawing comic books. When I look back on it now I see that these comic books were about the everyday -- but I did not know that then. There were no superheroes in my comic books, which is interesting as I think back about it, but I guess the comic books that I was reading, like Archie and Garfield, were not filled with superheroes either. Why was I drawing comics? Because drawing comics allowed me to be in my own world. As a child I was really quiet and comics became a creative outlet for me. I found drawing to be freeing, and my mother told me that even as a young child I would cry really badly if I had an image in my head and could not get that image out of my head. Drawing allowed me to get all those images out of my head." And more than two decades later, Sheena Rose is still doing what she did as a child; she is still trying to "get all those images" out of her head. Today drawing is an integral part of her artistic practice, though these ...
