Elton John Gives Piano Eulogy For David Bowie
Huffington Post - about 1 year
The Marquis of the Wiltern Theater for Elton John's Special Event Elton John performed a rare appearance at the Wiltern Theater last Thursday, in a one night special event to promote his new album "Wonderful Crazy Night". The intricately designed interior of the landmark theater, one of the art deco masterpieces of Las Angeles, made for an unusually intimate space to see a performer who is the third most successful artist in the history of the American charts, second only to Elvis Presley and the Beatles, and who has no problem filling much larger stadiums. "I would be lying if I said this wasn't a nerve wracking night," John said halfway through the evening. "Singing new songs is terrifying, and thank you for your patience!" The new album will be released in a few weeks and he was singing to the choir as the insiders and fans who paid $200 a ticket to see him started cheering from the first chord of "Funeral For A Friend", an old favorite he often starts his concerts with. ...

The Inquisitor - almost 2 years
It’s safe to say that more people will boycott Dolce & Gabbana this week. Just days after the Italian designing duo shared their thoughts about same-sex marriage and children conceived via IVF, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are now creating controversy for their new ad campaign. Kelly Cutrone, fashion publicist and judge on America’s Next Top Model, slammed Dolce & Gabbana on Twitter for an ad that glamorizes gang rape. Cutrone says that she believes the new ad depicts a woman about to be gang raped, according to E! Online. As you can see, the ad shows a woman pinned to the floor by a shirtless man as three other men hover around her. You can check out the controversial ad by clicking here. “I guess simulating gang bangs are fine – but IVF and same sex marriage are not – life according to @dolcegabbana,” Cutrone tweeted. The Untold Story of the Beatles' Gay Manager
Huffington Post - about 3 years
In the early 1960s, Beatles manager Brian Epstein made two bold and visionary statements about the future. He's famous for the first one: "The Beatles are going to be bigger than Elvis!" (At the time, the Fab Four were a middle-of-the-road Liverpool band rejected by every record company in the business.) Epstein's second visionary statement has been largely overlooked, but it was in fact bolder, more inspiring, and not only dangerous but borderline seditious. During a media appearance, after dashing lovestruck fans' hopes by revealing that the Beatles would one day be married, Brian added, "And someday, I might be married too!" No one paid much attention to that sentence. The media recorded it, thinking it a lighthearted joke, but it was hardly a laughing matter. What the public didn't know was that Brian Epstein was gay. And in 1960s England, forget about being allowed to marry; gay men and lesbians weren't allowed to openly walk the streets! It was literally a felony to be attracte ...

David Furnish: To Those Who Stood Against AIDS Apathy: Thank You
The Huffington Post - over 3 years
I remember seeing the first TV reports about a mysterious new disease called "AIDS" when I was a closeted young man in Canada. They started with images of gaunt, almost skeletal gay men losing hope as fast as they lost weight, which were followed by clips of fundamentalist preachers gloating that everything they said had been vindicated. Here, they announced, was God's judgment on perversion. They were not alone. Even the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, was privately saying he suspected they were right. As I watched this witch hunt, I backed deeper into the closet, and deeper into despair. Indeed, I ran to the very back of the closet and tried to nail it shut. The illness was gleefully labeled "the gay plague," and victims were treated like lepers, denied even the basics of compassionate care. Back then, everybody knew how the story of AIDS was going to play out. It was going to rage through gay people and prostitutes and injecting drug addicts across the ...

Jim David: God Save the Gracious Queen!
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the reigning constitutional monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of the Commonwealth realms; Supreme Governor of the Church of England; head of the Commonwealth of Nations; mother of Charles, Prince of Wales; grandmother of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Prince Harry of Wales; former mother-in-law of Diana, Princess of Wales; daughter of King George VI; great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria; and heir to Queen Elizabeth I, King Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots and God knows who else, has given her "royal assent" that puts marriage equality into law in England and Wales. The. Queen. Of. England. Has. Just. Approved. Marriage. Equality. Once more, ladies and gentlemen: The Queen of England has just approved marriage equality. I'd say this qualifies as one of the biggest, if not the biggest, in a series of very big deals. It was a big deal when the Netherlands became the first country to legalize marri ...

David Furnish: We Must Act Now To Achieve An AIDS-Free Generation
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Today, Dec. 1, 2012, we mark the 24th annual World AIDS Day since it was first observed in 1988. World AIDS Day has always been an occasion for renewing our urgency in the fight against AIDS, and this year is no different. In fact, this year new data are forcing us to confront a disturbing and sobering challenge: Although the rate of new HIV infections has leveled off in most demographics in America, there is one group in which it is still rising: young people. According to new data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every month approximately 1,000 more young people ages 13 to 24 become HIV-positive. Meanwhile, 60 percent of HIV-positive young people don't know they've contracted the virus, yet only 13 percent of high school students have been tested. This crisis of awareness is leaving our young people, and young black men in particular, unacceptably vulnerable. We have to act. If we are to achieve an AIDS-free generation, we must immediat ...
