A Star Wars Fan Flies to Paris to See 'The Force Awakens' Before the Rest of America
Huffington Post - about 1 year
When news broke that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would open two days early in Paris, an executive at a French cinema chain had a wild idea. Why not offer impatient Jedis from around the world a chance to see the movie first? “As we are located in the Charles De Gaulle airport area, we are the closest cinema from the U.S. to show the movie,” Yohann Stoll of EuropaCorp Cinemas told me. He called his friends at Air France and an alliance was born. If visitors booked certain flights to Paris arriving on the morning of December 16, shuttle buses would take them directly from the airport to the theater for a special private screening. Naturally, the invite read: “Join the French side!” Which is how yesterday I found myself on Air France flight 65 bound from Los Angeles to Paris wearing a Darth Vader T-shirt. When I first heard about Air France’s promotion, I had the same thought you’re probably having right now: Who would fly halfway across the world to see a movie two days early? But ...

Exclusive: David Tom Previews His Return - After 12 Years - to The Young and the Restless
Seattle Pi - about 3 years
There's hell to pay on CBS's The Young and the Restless! Grieving dad Billy Abbott (Billy Miller) doesn't for sure know the identity of the hit-and-run driver who killed his little girl but his suspicions continue to mount next week when he learns that Adam Newman (Michael Muhney) - the creep who committed the crime - is making plans to leave the country. Look familiar? Tom played Billy from 1999 to 2002 and took home an Emmy of his own. TV Guide Magazine spoke with Tom - also known as Paul Cramer on One Life to Live and Chip Diller on Veronica Mars - about his unexpected return to Genoa City. TV Guide Magazine: Is it weird being back? There's certainly no closure, but there's a change in the depth of his anger. Should the audience give Billy a free pass for his grief sex with Kelly [Cynthia Watros]? [...] yes!

Shell Review
The Film Pilgrim - over 4 years
Release Date (UK)– TBC Certificate (UK) – TBC Runtime – 90 mins Country – UK Director – Scott Graham Starring – Chloe Pirrie, Joseph Mawle, Iain de Caestecker, Kate Dickie Shell is the debut feature film from writer/director Scott Graham, and is set in the Scottish Highlands. Named after its seventeen year-old protagonist (Pirrie), Shell is a study of a life in isolation, far from the hustle and bustle of what many consider ‘modern living.’ Although the alienation of technology and modernity is still a hotly debated topic, this film comes at the problems of loneliness and entrapment from the opposite end of the spectrum. Shell lives and works in a petrol station garage with her dad, Pete (Mawle), and only has the chance to interact with other people when they stop for fuel, or need roadside assistance. She has a few regular customers who stop by once, or maybe twice a week; but for the majority of her time, Shell is alone in the cold, shack of a garage. While she minds to the ...

Voter Registration System Going Online
Belmont Patch - over 4 years
Registering to vote is catching up to the 21st century with new software that creates an online registration system making its way to county election offices statewide. The software to set up a link on election homepages was sent to county offices Friday, and online access is expected to be available by early September, in time for the Oct. 22 registration deadline for the Nov. 6 presidential election, State Sen. Leland Yee's (D-San Mateo/San Francisco) chief of staff, Adam Keigwin, said. The online registration system was put into place following passage of Yee's bill last fall. The law now mandates that the state recognize online registration as a legal method of registering to vote. The status quo required constituents fill out a paper form - which will still be available - but drew ire from many voters and election offices, Keigwin said. The online system, which will be coordinated through the California Secretary of State's office, expects to offer less paper prin ...

First-Time Voters: ID Requirements in San Mateo County
Burlingame Patch - over 4 years
Changes to voter ID law that affected California occurred in 2002, when the federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) was passed to require voters to provide one of several specific forms of ID, and in 2006, when state law was changed to conform to HAVA.  David Tom, San Mateo County election manager, predicts no changes in voter ID law for California in the near future. Tom says the identification of voters in San Mateo County is "a very smooth process." San Mateo County voters may register at any time, but to be eligible to vote in an upcoming election, your Voter Registration Form must be postmarked no later than 15 days before that election. You can obtain a registration form at any library, city or county office, DMV, or post office. If you are not a first-time voter in San Mateo County, you will not be required to show identification at the polls. First-Time Voter Requirements in CA: If you registered by mail, or you did not provide one of the required types of i ...

POLL: Does Your Vote Count?
Burlingame Patch - over 4 years
Did you spend time researching all the local ballot measures for the June 5 Presidential Primary Election? Do you know who won the county supervisor race, whether the school parcel tax passed or do you even care? We hear time and time again that every vote matters. San Mateo County Elections Manager David Tom affirmed that every vote counts when interviewed by Patch Editor Joan Dentler on Tuesday. "Everyone residing in the county will have their ballot counted," he said. "In California the rumor that we don't count every vote is false," Tom said. "That's why it doesn't happen overnight and it takes 28 days to certify the results. Voters in San Mateo County have to have their voices heard." Elections results updates for San Mateo County continue through June 13. Tom acknowledged that turnout is not where he wants it to be. "Turnout is low, but there have been a lot of changes in California since the voters passed Proposition 14 in 2010," Tom said referring to ...

Elections Manager: 'We Count Every Vote'
Belmont Patch - over 4 years
Even though voter turnout was low in Tuesday's Presidential Primary Election, every vote, whether cast in an electronic voting booth, paper ballot, mail-in, or provisional ballot will be counted, according to San Mateo County Elections Manager David Tom. "In California the rumor that we don't count every vote is false," said Tom. "That's why it doesn't happen overnight and it takes 28 days to certify the results. Voters in San Mateo County have to have their voices heard." Tom was referring to the long-standing rumor that unless a race is closely contested, vote-by-mail, or absentee ballots are not counted. "Everyone residing in the county will have their ballot counted," he said. He explained that California has a central ballot count--all ballots are returned to the county's election office to be counted. San Mateo County Election Office on Tower Road is where the official count will take place on Tuesday night. "Which is why it takes a bit of time to get the counts in. You ...
