Jon Stewart Delivers Angry, Eloquent Rant On GOP's Income Inequality Problem
Huffington Post - about 3 years
Jon Stewart spent much of Thursday's "Daily Show" on a topic he's clearly passionate over: Income inequality. Or, more specifically, the Republican party and conservative media's trend of going out of their way to demonize citizens in poverty and defend the rich. "The left thinks it's unfair because of systemic disadvantages for the less affluent, and the right thinks it's unfair because those advantages aren't systemic enough," he said. Over the next eight minutes, he played dozens of clips of conservative media personalities -- Bill O'Reilly, Steve Doocy, Eric Bolling, Charles Krauthammer -- who blast the poor by reflecting the Randian view that it's easier to "suck on the teat of the state" than to work for a living. He also took aim at Republican policies that uphold the same view, such as the recently proposed bill that would extend unemployment benefits, but only at the expense of health care. "It's like an O. Henry story!" he joked. He imagined an unemployed man telling h ...

Dean Cain Gets A Surprise On 'Hit The Floor'
Huffington Post Sports - almost 4 years
VH1’s latest scripted series, “Hit The Floor,” follows the trials and tribulations of a group of dancers called the Los Angeles Devil Girls, who are basically a fictional version of the Lakers Girls. The premiere showed Ahsha (Taylour Paige) -- the daughter of an original Devil Girl -- audition and make the squad. Ahsha’s mom Sloane, played by Kimberly Elise, vowed never to return to the arena after leaving the squad, but came back to congratulate her daughter -- and surprise former Devils player/current coach Pete Davenport (Dean Cain). Sloane asked Pete to look out for her daughter in the competitive world she was now a part of, and Pete pointed out that the dancers weren't his responsibility, to which Sloane replied, “Ahsha is your responsibility. She’s your daughter.” Dun-dun-dun! There's more drama to come on the series -- the show’s creator, James LaRosa, described it as “So You Think You Can Dance” meets "Black Swan" -- telling The Hollywood Reporter that the ...

Kevin McDonough: Television's Endless War Opens a Brand New Front
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
We are now at war with everyone. Everywhere. All the time. Battling without cease over every conceivable subject. And that's just on television. Over the past several years, "Wars" and rumors of war have erupted in the strangest places. A reality series about the banality of the DMV becomes "Parking Wars." Scrounge artists bidding on abandoned lockers wage "Storage Wars." Interior decorators declare "Design Wars." The unshaven sprout "Whisker Wars." Stan Lee presides as nerds erupt in "Fan Wars." Trick-or-treaters have scared up "Halloween Wars," not to be confused with "Cupcake Wars." These reality "War" shows seem to feature everything but real war. But even that is changing. Last summer, NBC squandered too many of its valuable Olympics advertising minutes promoting something called "Stars Earn Stripes," a reality TV contest pitting B-listers (Dean Cain, Todd Palin, etc.) in "real" war games. Critics and audiences were both appalled at the co-mingling of combat a ...

Authorities Release More Details On Mindy McCready's Death
Huffington Post - about 4 years
HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. — Mindy McCready, who hit the top of the country charts before personal problems sidetracked her career, died Sunday in Arkansas in an apparent suicide. She was 37. The Cleburne County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that McCready was found dead at a residence in Heber Springs from what appears to be a single, self-inflicted gunshot to the head. An autopsy is pending. It wasn't the first suicide attempt for the troubled singer, whose list of problems only continued to grow in 2013. McCready entered court-ordered rehab earlier this month after her father told a judge she was no longer taking care of herself or her children and was abusing drugs and alcohol. Her sons were put in foster care at the time, but it's not clear where Zander and Zayne were at the time of McCready's suicide. McCready's longtime boyfriend David Wilson, the father of her younger son, died last month in Arkansas. Authorities found his body on the same porch th ...
