Denise Crosby: Police baffled by disappearance of elderly man last seen in Yorkville
The Beacon News - over 3 years
There are plenty of people deeply troubled by the disappearance of an elderly Arlington Heights man, last seen in the Kendall County area Aug. 23. I have received several calls from Fox Valley residents who, as it closes in on a month since 84-year-old Eugene Jonsson was reported missing, are still scouring parking lots in the off-chance they’ll spot his gray 2004 Buick LeSabre bearing the vanity plate JONS507. I’ve spoken several times with Arlington Heights Police, including Det. Andrew Blevins, who told me Tuesday he’s troubled and baffled by this case that doesn’t seem to make much sense. “The …

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The mother of a Massachusetts man fatally shot inside a Harvard University dormitory during a drug-related robbery has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Ivy League school. Her lawyers tell The Boston Globe ( ) that Denise Cosby believes her son would be alive today if the school had followed its own policies. http://b.globe.com/JFzP6k The 21-year-old Cosby was shot by one of three men during a drug robbery. Denise Crosby: Music teacher’s ‘ironic’ courtroom words hit low note
The Beacon News - almost 5 years
I wasn’t even in the courtroom, but I could almost feel the slime oozing everywhere. Just reading the words that convicted sex offender Steve Orland uttered before his sentencing on Friday was enough to make me want to call in the hazmat crew. The once-highly-regarded band director at West Aurora High School, who pleaded guilty to fondling two students, had been charged with 27 counts of battery, sexual assault and sexual abuse. Yet, as he stood in front of Judge Allen Anderson in the Kane County courthouse, this disgraced music man couldn’t stop bragging about himself long enough to offer …

Denise Crosby: After four months in morgue, burial brings no closure
The Beacon News - almost 5 years
When John Ulrich learned his cousin Whitney Zenker had died Oct. 28 in his Elgin home from an apparent heart attack at age 64, he grieved for the simple, kind-hearted man who’d been more like a little brother to him. Then the 80-year-old Hampshire resident — with the consent of three cousins, the closest surviving kin — called the Kane County coroner’s office to make arrangements for the body. That’s when he learned a public guardian had been appointed to oversee Whitney Zenker’s remains and estate. According to Loren Carrera, chief deputy coroner, it’s not usual for such a move …

Denise Crosby: Spreading hope is black and white(board) to AU senior
The Beacon News - almost 5 years
With medical school in her plans once she graduated from Aurora University, Lauren Lawson pretty much thought she had her life mapped out. Then in October, the 22-year-old Oswego woman developed strep throat. And as she lay in bed battling fever, sore throat and swollen glands, she realized nothing made sense anymore. Lawson decided she didn’t want to go into more debt with all that schooling — or put her parents in such a position. And because she never gave anything less than 100 percent, she knew that, as much as she wanted to be a doctor to help others, …

Denise Crosby: When stupid squabbles turn ugly lives are at risk
The Beacon News - about 5 years
In two incidents last weekend, we saw how, in the blink of an eye, an everyday situation can careen out of control. Sometimes it ends tragically, as it did when a well-respected downtown Naperville bar turned into a bloody crime scene after a squabble got ugly — and a second-grade teacher was stabbed to death. It happened again the following day, on Super Bowl Sunday, in an Oswego Wal-Mart, when an off-duty Kendall County sheriff’s deputy got into an argument in the checkout lane that resulted in him drawing his gun and aiming it at a customer. Luckily, that second …

Denise Crosby: Happy ending for the elusive ‘Tumor Dog’
The Beacon News - about 5 years
Surrounded by her captors — now her biggest fans — Windy (the Wonder Dog) hardly lives up to her notorious reputation as a wanted fugitive. For six months the rottweiler/shar-pei mix eluded animal control officers in both Aurora and Naperville with her speed — 30 mph, they estimated — and ability to leap over barricades much like a deer. Even more amazing: She could do all that with a 5-pound tumor hanging from her underside. Finally captured Jan. 4, Windy (so named because of that quickness) turned out to be such a lovable, sweet-natured dog that everyone who meets her …
