Man charged in killing of 21-year-old transgender woman, rape of 11-year-old girl
LATimes - almost 2 years
An Inglewood man was charged Monday with shooting a 21-year-old transgender woman during a robbery and forcing an 11-year-old girl into prostitution, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. Robert James Spells, a 30-year-old black man, was charged with one count of capital murder with a special circumstance of killing someone during a robbery. Spells, who is due in court Monday, was also charged with six other felonies including second-degree robbery, offering the child to men for sex and two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child. On Dec. 3, 2014, Deshawnda “Ta-Ta” Sanchez called 911 at about 4 a.m. stating she had been robbed and assaulted. While pounding on a door for help in the 6100 block of S. Wilton Place, she was shot. Police have not specified what was stolen from Sanchez but said her call was key in identifying Spells as the suspect. DNA and residential surveillance footage also helped police connect Spells to the crime. In addition, he is ...

Arizona authorities probe church fires as possible hate crimes
Yahoo News - over 2 years
By David Schwartz MESA Ariz. (Reuters) - Arizona authorities are probing a series of arson fires at suburban Phoenix churches as possible hate crimes after an apparent arsonist set Bibles alight on church doorsteps, police said on Thursday.     Authorities said up to six small fires were touched off at four churches in Mesa, Arizona, since mid-May by burning the books, said police spokeswoman Sergeant Diana Williams. Police have declined to confirm the details of that incident.     Mesa police said the first arson fire was reported on May 11 at the Mesa Baptist Church, followed by another at the church on May 17. Those blazes were ignited near a back door to the gymnasium on the sprawling four-acre grounds of the Mesa Baptist church, Senior Pastor Mark Rice said.

Obama: When you're the president, everyone takes your calls
Yahoo News - over 3 years
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The coolest thing about being the leader of the free world? Everyone will take your call, said President Barack Obama in a television interview on Tuesday. Minister Leslie Watson Malachi: African American Turnout Is Here to Stay
Huffington Post - about 4 years
In 2008, for the first time in our history, African Americans turned out to the polls at the same rate as white voters. Then we spent the next four years hearing that that high turnout was a fluke. "Experts" told us we would lose our enthusiasm. We'd be daunted by new voting laws. We'd want to protest marriage equality. We'd think our vote doesn't count. The "experts" were wrong. On November 6, African Americans turned out to vote in record numbers, many of us waiting in long lines and going through plenty of red tape to do so. One of these was a determined 100 year old "Church Mother" in Elmhurst, New York who didn't want any favors and stood in line and in solidarity with her fellow citizens. This happened not just because our enthusiasm lasted, but because our organization strengthened. African American communities had strong voter turnout operations long before there was an African American man on the presidential ballot, with many of them centered around t ...

ABC Hosts NY-6 Candidate Forum [Video]
New York Observer - almost 5 years
Yesterday, the three main Democratic candidates to replace retiring Rep. Gary Ackerman went on Up Close with Diana Williams. The candidates for this northeastern Queens district, Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley, Assemblyman Rory Lancman, and Assemblywoman Grace Meng, were forced to say specifically where they would come out on some of the contentious issues of the day. For example, Ms. Crowley recently announced her opposition to a police funding amendment that the rest of New York City’s Democratic congressional delegation supported (including her cousin, Rep. Joe Crowley), arguing it undermined the NYPD. Quizzed on how he would have voted, Mr. Lancman said he would have voted the same as Ms. Crowley, but Ms. Meng said the anti-discrimination language in the amendment was too important and said she would have voted in favor of the legislation. Psychics Offer Up Their Skills For American Legion Auxiliary
Barnegat- Ocean Acres Patch - almost 5 years
In the early 1990s, members of the Barnegat American Legion Post 232 Auxiliary noticed the success some other veteran service organizations and their auxiliaries in Ocean County were having with psychic fairs and decided to give it a try. Twenty years later, the tradition is alive in Barnegat. Seventy-six residents from all over the area, from Barnegat and Lacey to Toms River, came to the Post headquarters on Route 9 to spend Friday the 13th trying to glimpse their futures. "I saw this done in the Elks in Manahawkin, and I started it here," said Roni Covello, 55, a member of the auxiliary. "Everybody likes a psychic. Women do, men do." "We've had a lot more men lately," said Joan Sonnenberg, 59, the auxiliary's president. "We've had couples come in and do readings together. We've had people do all five psychics in one night." "I'm just out with my mom, it's kind of a girl's night," said Jennifer McAllister, 27, of Manahawkin. "It's always interesting, what they tell me, ...
