Lee Hernandez: Kids Choice Awards 2013: The Future Looks Bright for Latinos in Hollywood!
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Hollywood isn't always fair to Latinos. We know this. This year, a slew of roles that could've (and arguably, should've!) gone to Latino stars, were instead given to non-Latino talent like Ben Affleck, Naomi Watts, and Ewan McGregor. All three actors played characters based on real people -- and those real people were all Latinos... Adding insult to injury, Javier Bardem was snubbed for what many believed was one of the finest performances EVER in a Bond film -- the role of the flamboyant Silva in Skyfall. In a nutshell, getting Latinos into this year's biggest movies -- and getting them to the Kodak Theater as Oscar nominees -- was, in two words: "The Impossible." And it wasn't just the big screen that was unkind to Latino stars this year. Television, where we've seen some progress in recent years, had very little interest in Latinos as well. This was the year that only one Latino actor (Cuban-American actress JoAnna Garcia Swisher) had a lead role on a new major net ...

Telenovela Stars Cross Over
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Soap operas are a very popular part of Latino culture, and they are also the birthplace of major stars who have seen in them a platform to excel and make a name for themselves. Celebrities like Sofia Vergara, Gael García Bernard, and Salma Hayek among others come from this school and today are recognized for their work in the film and television industry in both English and Spanish. Recently, NBC Latino's Nina Terrero, showed how soap operas are a first step for Latino celebrities looking to get closer to the United States, and especially to the Los Angeles entertainment scene. “We all had to pay our dues by starting somewhere and in the same way many American actors start their careers by doing commercials, many of us got our start in novelas – the best quality television available in our countries,” said “Rock of Ages” actor Diego Boneta to NBC Latino. Certainly, the popularity of these TV shows has been growing with time, creating in the last couple of years a b ...

Bed-Stuy Patch - over 4 years
If watching celebrities sing karaoke is your idea of a good time, then “Rock of Ages” could be the movie for you. All others need not apply. The film, which is based on the Broadway musical, attempts to make up for in energy what it lacks in originality. Its cast includes former “American Idol” contestant Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti and Tom Cruise, all of whom get the chance to belt out a variety of 1980s heavy metal hits and power ballads. The plot of “Rock of Ages” is obviously torn straight from the lyrics of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” which is the movie’s final number. Hough plays Sherrie Christian, as in “Oh Sherrie” and “Sister Christian,” who just happens to be a small town girl taking the midnight bus to Hollywood to become a rock ‘n’ roll star. Once there, she meets city boy Drew (Diego Boneta), who works as a bartender at a famed Los Angeles nightclub where rock stars congregate. Whether he was born and rai ...

The Express Tribune Blogs - over 4 years
LOS ANGELES:  The animals of Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted held the top spot on US and Canadian box office charts for a second straight weekend with $35.5 million business, beating new films from Tom Cruise and Adam Sandler, according to studio estimates over the weekend. The third Madagascar movie about the misadventures of escaped zoo animals lifted the animated family film above the new releases; such as, Rock of Ages, a 1980s-era musical starring Cruise that was No 3 and comedy That’s My Boy, which landed with a thud at No 5 in what box office watchers said was the worst opening for a live-action Sandler movie since 1996’s Happy Gilmore.
