Minority Report: Not the Movie -- The Oscar Controversy
Huffington Post - about 1 year
I'm not comfortable taking issue with the hubbub surrounding the lack of minorities in major categories in this year's Oscar race. Indeed, it's unfortunate in the past two years there've been none in the four acting races, but the omissions belie a number of factors and, if there is criticism to be directed, it should not be the Motion Picture Academy. There've been 97 minority actors nominated since 1939 when Hattie McDaniel became the first Black Oscar recipient for playing a servant in Gone With The Wind. And that is part of the problem, because for many, many years Blacks and other minorities were relegated to roles not only of a supporting nature but indicative of the racist times when their lots in major professions were limited. Film icon Myrna Loy of Thin Man fame is said to have asked MGM's hierarchy, "Why does every Black person in the movies have to play a servant? How about a Black person walking up the steps of a court house carrying a briefcase?" But sadly the next B ...

Vin Diesel Shares First 'Fast & Furious 7' Photo on Facebook
Moviefone Blog - over 3 years
Vin Diesel's Facebook page is a window into his soul -- and his career. Dude does not hold back, on anything, probably to the chagrin of studios and major corporations that back his filmic endeavors. But if you're looking for up-to-date info on the gravel-voiced actor, it's a great place to go, and was the first place where he announced that he was talking to Marvel about becoming part of an upcoming project (later revealed to be a voice role in next summer's "Guardians of the Galaxy") and the spot where he dropped production artwork back when "Riddick" was just a glimmer in his eye. Now he's gone and unleashed the first photo (below) from "Fast & Furious 7" on his Facebook page, for all of his 47 million followers. "Like." The photo is pretty much what you'd expect: Diesel in a leather jacket and his girl's metal cross, looking pensive. His costar, Paul Walker, standing beside him, looking worse for wear, in a hoodie that we're pretty sure he's been wearing since the firs ...

Scott Mendelson: Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin: Films I Like or Love Despite Finding Them Morally or Ideologically Objectionable
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Let's pretend for a moment that Zero Dark Thirty does in fact do all of the things that its critics, many of whom have not even seen the film, are claiming.  Let's pretend that it endorses torture on a practical and/or moral level.  Let's pretend that it implies/states that information gleaned from torture was essential in catching Osama Bin Laden and would not have been discovered any other way.  Does that (incorrect, I'd argue) interpretation automatically negate its worth as quality film making?  There has been much discussion of the alleged morality of Bigelow and Boal's superb procedural, much of it penned by those who believe that either it is 'pro-torture' or at least will be interpreted as much by general moviegoers (a classic case of 'I'm smart enough to understand but they aren't').  The question for those critics becomes whether its alleged sins negates its worth and/or can be separated from its qualities as a film.  But quite frankly, it's more than possible to ...

Thulsa Doom, of course, being the sinister sorcerer played by James Earl Jones in the original "Conan the Barbarian." "I certainly have been working on it for some time. It’s written and I’ve just been trying to put it together." "It’s sort of like one of my projects; I put my own money on it and it’s sitting there for now," he added. "There are other projects that I’m also trying to get going as well and, like those projects, I’ve become very passionate about this project as well." Upon first glance, the choice to make a feature film revolving around Thulsa Doom might strike someone as a bit overly ambitious. But th ...
