Here's The Real Reason David Bowie Wasn't In 'The Lord Of The Rings'
Huffington Post - 2 months
“The Lord of the Rings” could’ve had a lot of ch-ch-ch-ch-changes in the casting process, but the most legendary “almost” story involves David Bowie.  Earlier this year, Dominic Monaghan, who plays Merry in the film series, confirmed to The Huffington Post that he did in fact see Bowie at the casting agency. “David Bowie came in and signed his little list and went in. And I’m assuming he read for Gandalf. I can’t think of anything else he would’ve read for,” said Monaghan. What’s this, precious? David Bowie could’ve been Gandalf? The story has always been murky. The rumors were that Bowie wanted to actually play the role of Elrond, and that he approached the studio. So what’s the truth? Did he audition? Was he turned down? Is there life on Mars? So many questions. Now, we also have answers. HuffPost spoke with casting director Amy Hubbard in honor of the 15-year anniversary of the release of “The Fellowship of the Ring,” and she finally revealed the real reason Bowi ...

Orlando Bloom Throws It Back To That Time The 'Lord Of The Rings' Cast Got Matching Tattoos
Huffington Post - 4 months
Orlando Bloom is nostalgic for the good old days. The ones when the world was unaware of his preferred paddleboarding regalia, his ears were pointy, and his hair was more majestic than Katy Perry’s ever will be.  That’s why Bloom threw it back to the time he spent filming the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy on Thursday, with an Instagram of his co-stars and their matching Elvish tattoos.  Filming a fantasy epic for more than a year straight and reuniting every year for weeks of additional filming apparently bonds a cast for life. To commemorate the experience, Bloom and other members of the “fellowship,” including Sir Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, got tattoos of the Elvish number nine.  “tbt to when we all got tats cos we loved so much,” he captioned the photo where they all look like LITERAL BABIES. tbt to when we all got tats cos we loved so much A photo posted by orlandobloom (@orlandobloom) on Oct 13, 2016 at 1 ...

Dominic Monaghan Says He'll Leave America If Trump Wins The Presidency
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Dominic Monaghan deals with all types of dangerous predators on his TV series "Wild Things," but there's one creature even he can't stomach: Donald Trump. During a conversation with HuffPost Live on Wednesday, the English actor told host Alyona Minkovski that he would leave the United States if the real-estate mogul turned presidential candidate made it to the White House. "I find him upsetting, you know? I mean, I don't think I'd live in America if he became president," Monaghan said, adding that perhaps he'd go north, "to Canada, where they seem to be a little nicer." While he might not be around to experience a Trump presidency, Monaghan said he sees a grim future for anyone who is. "I think he's a dangerous man," he said. "I think he'll militarize this country, and I think he'll go to war with every other country that he feels like, and I think we will be a much more targeted country for terrorism than we would be with any other president." This Insane, Tiny Spider Grabs Its Prey Without Weaving A Web
Huffington Post - over 3 years
By Tia Ghose, LiveScience Staff Writer: Scientists have discovered a new spider species in Laos, in Southeast Asia. The spider, dubbed Ctenus monaghani, was discovered crawling across a researchers path while he was filming a nature documentary called "Wild Things." The unobtrusive little creature measures just 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) across and is part of a genus of wandering spiders, meaning it catches prey without weaving a web. Instead, wandering spiders typically prowl the jungle floors at night, pounce on unsuspecting prey and deliver a deadly sting. Southeast Asia is teeming with biodiversity. Scientists have discovered several endangered frog species in Laos in recent years. Southeast Asia is also home to several endangered lizard species, such as the Komodo dragon. Peter Jäger, an arachnologist at the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt, Germany, was filming "Wild Things" when he noticed the little spider scurry across his path. Jäger decid ...

Dominic Monaghan On 'Wild Things' And His Obsession With Nature
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Dominic Monaghan has been well-prepared for his latest TV venture, "Wild Things," for his entire life. Besides an innate fascination with all things in nature, Monaghan's previous roles in the movie trilogy "Lord Of The Rings" and the TV show "Lost" have exposed him to natural environments he may not have experienced otherwise. To put it simply, Monaghan is an outdoorsman, and is absolutely bonkers for nature. "Wild Things" follows Monaghan as he travels around the globe searching for nature's strangest and most beautiful creatures. Some are terrifying (cobras, tarantulas, water snakes), but all are fascinating, and Monaghan shows immense respect for the animals he encounters, and bears a level of professionalism and awe that we've seen before, embodied in the late Steve Irwin. Huffpost TV chatted with Monaghan over the phone from Los Angeles -- he explained to us why he's so fascinated by nature, how it all began, and how he's trying to encourage people to get out an ...

'Wild Things With Dominic Monaghan' review
San Francisco Chronicle - about 4 years
'Wild Things With Dominic Monaghan' review Monaghan, 36, gained fame as an actor working with the formidable Patricia Routledge in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, before breaking out in such vehicles as Lost, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and X-Men Origins: In the first episode, the actor tromps through the jungles of Vietnam in search of the giant water bug, which may only be 3 inches long but has been known to capture and kill creatures 10 times its size. Along the way, like Dorothy's scruffier British cousin on an overgrown road to Oz, Monaghan makes many new "friends," such as a huge python he struggles to lift onto his own body, a water scorpion that looks like a praying mantis, and a deadly monocle cobra he grabs by the tail. Eventually, Monaghan travels by boat on the Dong Nai River to Cat Tien National Park, then treks inland to the aptly named Crocodile Lake, said to contain 120 crocs, whose eyes glow menacingly after the sun sets. On the way to the ca ...
