WATCH: A Rare Birth Defect Won't Stop This Guy From Rockin' Out!
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Dean Zimmer has arthrogryposis, a rare disorder that restricts joint movement in his arms and legs. He's 51 years old and is confined to a wheelchair. He's also an absolute rockstar on the drums. Zimmer talks about his past and shows off his raw talent in the 6-minute documentary, "Drummer Wanted," by filmmakers Ross Harris and Stanley Gonzales. "I answered a drummer wanted ad," Zimmer explains in the clip. "I said, 'Hey down here, I'm the drummer. They looked at me like I had three heads, like, 'You're the guy?'" Zimmer began playing drums about 30 years ago, by banging on his legs before moving to a drum set. He told the Los Angeles Times that he knew people would be skeptical of his new passion -- even his family had their doubts. "Nobody really told me I couldn't do it, but I could just see it in people's eyes," he told the paper in an 1990 interview. "I was the opposite of [people who didn't fight to overcome their adversities]. I wasn't handicapped; I ...

Bryce Maddock: Tastemakers: The Companies That Tell Us What We Like and How They Do It
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Heads or tails? There's something refreshing about that question. It's simple. Two possible choices. Unfortunately, most decisions are not that easy to make. We are fortunate and unfortunate to live in an era where we are confronted with not one, or two, but nearly infinite options. This plethora of choices can be overwhelming. In a recent Vanity Fair article President Obama mentioned "research that shows the simple act of making decisions degrades one's ability to make further decisions. It's why shopping is so exhausting. You need to focus your decision-making energy. You need to routinize yourself. You can't be going through the day distracted by trivia." Technology is one of the biggest bearers of choice. The Internet is endless. Even the curated Apple App Store has 700,000 different Apps to choose from. But I don't want a list of 50 different recipe apps, I just want to know which recipe app is the best! Hence, a new market has emerged and companies like The Fancy, ...

Bloomfield Patch - almost 5 years
When is a balloon festival not (just) balloon festival? That’s a tough question, especially when a huge yearly event is billed as such (I mean, it's called the Festival of Ballooning, after all) and there certainly are plenty of hot-air balloons to be displayed. Still, the Quick Chek Festival of Ballooning—in its 30th year, running from July 27 through 29 at Solberg Airport in Readington—is also part amusement park , ith a healthy number of rides, an arts-and-crafts emporium, a yoga and Zumba demonstration, and lots and lots of food. Of the 30 years, Quick Chek has been a major sponsor for 20. And for the first time, Patch is partnering with the festival to get you in at a great price. Between May 13 and 20, use this link to buy tickets with the promotional code PATCH12, and you'll get adult tickets for just $15 (they're normally $30 at the gate). 97.1/The River’s Eddie Money experiment ends after three months
ajc - about 5 years
Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll. After three months, rock station 97.1/The River has quietly ended its experiment with rocker Eddie Money as its morning host. English Nick (AKA Nick Parsons), who has been on 96Rock, 99X and Rock 100.5 in years past, has taken over for now. Tony Kidd, Cox Radio Atlanta programming vice president, said Money’s fame didn’t translate into any ratings improvement after he joined in early October. In fact, ratings in the mornings among 25-to-54 year olds, slipped from October to December, falling from 11th to 15th, according to Arbitron. And mornings remained the River’s weakest time slot. English Nick now has a morning gig at the River, which may become permanent. Money’s publicist has not returned emails, texts and calls for comment. But Money, who had done the show from Los Angeles (some live, some pre-taped), shouldn ...
