The Art and Style of Katrina
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Eight years ago, during the unforgettable summer of 2005, Hurricane Katrina ravished through the Gulf Coast. We, along with many other New Orleans residents, were forced to relocate to nearby Houston, Texas. After Katrina we saw many new businesses in New Orleans face inevitable failure. During the two years that we spent in Houston, we came together to develop a lifestyle brand that reflected the cultural influences of New Orleans and our love of high end fashion and couture. What we produced was a rare and eclectic collection we call "Jerk and Jon." We returned to New Orleans in 2007 with "Jerk and Jon," a business plan and even more tenacity. Our unique design style and custom made pieces began to create a buzz through the music, sports and entertainment industry. We had the fortune of working with the likes of Jackie Jackson, Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson, Kerri Hilson and Elise Neal. However, we wanted to find a way to share our fashion experiences with the city of New Orle ...

Myrdith Leon Mccormack: Craig Davidson: Celebrating A Soldier Story
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Raising two boys is one of the biggest challenges I have ever faced. Physically loving a child and feeding him is the easy part, even though it means employment is necessary to provide the required funds. However, the emotional, spiritual and social direction that comes with the responsibility of being a parent is another ballgame all together. Giving and showing love can be an instinctual or a learned behavior that each one of us is capable of. But you can only give what you have. You can only teach what you were taught. You can only transfer the energy that you have inside you. Raising boys into men can be a difficult task for a woman because we are forced to act out of character. We think, I am not a man, so I cannot convey my feelings to my sons in the midst of my own emotional experience. Or, I am not a man, so I cannot relate with these boys the same way when they face their challenges. What we should say as a reminder to ourselves is, I do have a human und ...

Myrdith Leon Mccormack: Elise Neal, 1982 Actress, Shines on the Big Screen
Huffington Post - about 4 years
I'm a firm believer that knowledge is the key to successfully conquering life endeavor. I don't mean knowledge as far as just being familiar with the materials, laws and rules that govern our lives but mastering them to use the knowledge to work in your favor. As persons of color, of African descent, we were banned from getting a proper education. Of learning to read or even attending school. Our legal disenfranchisement has had an impact on individuals, communities -- and ultimately -- society at large. African Americans have fought and died to gain the right to education. Our ancestors struggled to have access to the same resources their constituents had the right, the luxury, to enjoy. Today, the struggle continues. Laws barring our enrollment in school no longer exist, but the lack of access to proper financial resources continues to be a challenge. This is the story I keep in the forefront of my life, my children's lives and every young person I mentor. It i ...

Myrdith Leon Mccormack: Hill Harper: Big Brother, Big Dreams
Huffington Post - about 4 years
For the first part of my life, I lived in Haiti. I remember some of that time, but it comes to me in spurts. What I remember most is the life we started here in America. Attending school, making friends and adjusting to a new culture were part of my growing process here. It came with so many liberties which were not prevalent in my native land; the freedom, the abundance of resources available to us -- food, education, material possessions. The opportunities were extraordinary. Yes, we faced hardship growing up in the '70s and '80s, with racial stereotyping, crime, drugs taking over certain neighborhoods. But, I still recall having a positive experiences and people in my life to guide me, either by choice, need or force, preventing me from going down the wrong path. Thank goodness for my mother's relentless passion, love, dedication and sense of responsibility. My sister, brother and I grew up to be dependable, socially conscious adults. Today, having my own children, I see ...

Barack Hussein Obama. Mr. President, leader of the free world, husband, father, role model, first black president of the United States... However you want to label him, he has made an indelible mark in history. You don't have to like him, his ideals, morals or standards, but his current title has earned him a measure of respect that anyone in his position, past and future, is due. He is president. For me -- a mother, a woman of color -- and others like me, he is a symbol of hope. We can tell our children, especially our black boys and young black men, that they can be anything they want to be, if they put their mind to it and work hard. Do I want my sons to run for political office? Absolutely not. Do I want them to be strong, spiritual, responsible, law-abiding citizens, who are respected and make positive contributions in their communities? You better believe it. President Obama motivated a whole generation of young people to do things that they never imagined doing be ...

Myrdith Leon Mccormack: A Beautiful Mind -- A Conversation with Troi Zee
Huffington Post - over 4 years
As I prepare to return to school once again, for the fourth time in my lifetime, it occurs to me that I have always been excited about learning. I always embrace the opportunity to discover something new, whether it is a new place, a new culture, or the psychology of human behavior, which makes us so special. As I scroll through the list of courses I'd like to take on this journey of knowledge, to enhance my newfound career, I become giddy. Yes, I can do it on-line, in the comfort of my own home. However, the classroom experience offers interaction with others, exchange of thoughts and ideas, and the possibility to grow as a professional. The prospects are so exciting. This was the same excitement that I heard in the voice of an enchanting young actress I met this past summer, Troi Zee. At the age of 10, this charming young lady is able to hold her intelligent conversations, without sass. You will be in awe of her ability to convey her thoughts and engage in a conversation ...
