She is perhaps best known for her global conservation efforts relating to marine, wildlife and habitat conservation, mediation of extinction, pollution and cruelty to animals. Sursara is widely regarded as an expert voice and advocate for environmental issues and animal rights.

    On 19 September 2014 Sursara claimed she was attacked by a shark in Australian waters off the north Queensland coast.

However by 25 September, a number of shark activists and marine biologists accused Elissa Sursara of making the attack up, expressing doubt over the image of the bite marks. They pointed to evidence of Photoshopping and other clues that didn't make sense about the attack. Sursara rebutted the fake attack claims.
