Comic Con: The Line Between Consumers and Creators
Huffington Post - over 1 year
When you walk the floor at Comic Con, one thing becomes immediately clear; fans certainly like engaging in far more than passive viewing. Comic Con may be the white-hot center of the fan world. Tickets to the convention sold out weeks before the doors opened, with 151,000 tickets sold in 2014. Walking the floor, you see Dr. Who, Penguin, Deadpool, and Batman -- in fact, lots of Bat-men. But don't confuse these elaborately costumed characters as paid representatives of the movie studios, and comic book companies, that own the brands. In fact, very much the opposite -- these are fans. Young and old, children dressed up with their costumed parents, and provocatively dressed young women and dramatically festooned young men -- all arriving at New York's Javits Center to see and be seen. The event -- run since 2006 by ReedPop, a division of publisher Reed Exhibitions -- isn't related to Comic Con International in San Diego, which launched the comic convention trend. And what C ...

Juan Pablo Bach Recap 6: Who ISN'T One of JP's "Special Ones"?
Huffington Post - about 3 years
Monday night Johnny Pabs and his harem of eight ladies relocated from Full Metal Jacket (Vietnam) to Lord of the Rings (New Zealand). This week's episode saw a group date, two one on one dates, and two ladies sent home in tears. Andi (AKA Ombre DA, Eliza Dushku look-alike) finally scored a one on one date to which she wore a great pair of leather boots, white jeans, and a plaid button down. I'm still stumped as to how the women fit THAT MANY outfits, dresses, sweaters, and shoes into their 2 bags (not to mention make-up, curling irons, hair products), but they must be better folders/packers than I am (you don't get hair this good by only packing a few volumizing products). Johnny Pabs and Andi hop on a jet boat and tear through a waterway that I pray wasn't a "no wake zone." The weather is rainy and overcast, but that didn't stop them from stripping down to swimsuits and hopping in the water (Andi rocked a 1 piece, which looked like a swim burqa compared to the teeny bikinis w ...

Juan Pablo Bach Recap Ep 4: Johnny Pabs Is a Seoul Man
Huffington Post - about 3 years
On Monday the thirteen remaining ladies and Johnny Pabs packed their suitcases and headed for the land of K Pop, Gangham Style, and marketplaces that sell the horrifying delicacies from Fear Factor: South Korea! Upon learning that they are heading to Seoul, South Korea, California hairdresser Clare exclaimed, "Korea -- I don't even have a Kimono!" but I'm sure she meant a hanbok (the tradition garment for formal events in Korea, as we ALL know). Johnny Pabs travels alone (like a Venzuelan rolling stone) and roams the streets of Seoul solo while the ladies make the trip together while shrieking, smiling and being so damn American all along the way. The first date card arrives to their hotel suite in Seoul and it just says "Pop" from JP. The group date will be Chelsie, Cassandra, Elise, Danielle, Kat, and Nikki (as I noticed immediately, majority blonde). Cassandra wonders if the "pop" clue means that their group date will involve popcorn, apparently forgetting that Chris Harrison JUS ...

Kolten Wong and the Hawaii Way
Huffington Post Sports - over 3 years
Hawaii is well-known for a lot of things: Paradise. Beautiful Beaches. Luaus. Hotels. Waikiki. Tiny Bubbles. Rainbows (the Drive In, the real thing, and the Warriors). Vacation? It's strongest trait though, is probably not what you'd expect. Lets preface this. I watch a lot of reality TV. A LOT. If it's on primetime and it involves some kind of talent outside of the words "real" and "housewife", I'm probably in. So it was fairly early on that I noticed something pretty incredible. Hawaii as a... viewing body, is good at supporting the locals on these shows. Really good. Savant good. It began, for me at least, with Jasmine Trias. She was my age and really, my first connection to a non-athlete beyond the confines of the state. When she made it to the live shows of American Idol, Season 3, WE made it to the live shows of American Idol, Season 3. And so, buoyed on the strength of one or two above-average performances, and the relentless loyalty of her home state, Tr ...

Seth MacFarlane Splits From Emilia Clarke
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Good news for Seth MacFarlane! After enraging half of the ladies of Hollywood with his "We Saw Your Boobs" song at the Oscars, he's back on the market -- now if only he can find a date. E! News reports that the 39-year-old "Family Guy" creator and "Game of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke, 25, have called it quits. "They are no longer dating," a source told the website. "It was really a location challenge. She has been in Europe shooting Game of Thrones and he is based in California, so it was hard to make it work despite the distance. They have remained friends." The pair first took their relationship public in September when they were spotted hanging out at HBO's Emmy after party together at the Los Angeles Pacific Design Center, and were later spotted leaving together. At the time, sources confirmed to US Weekly, that the two had already been seeing each other for a "few months." Prior to hosting the Oscars in February, MacFarlane had only good things to say about ...

Huffington Post - over 4 years
Actress Eliza Dushku and screenwriter-director Joss Whedon launched a fundraising event in San Francisco to raise money for ThriveGulu, a charity founded by Dushku's mom, Judy, which aids survivors of Uganda's civil war. Whedon kicked the night off with a powerful speech about the unique and utter necessity of spreading ThriveGulu's cause. "The most basic human need is humanity. The most basic human need is to have something to strive for, to have an identity, to be heard," Whedon said. "This is ground zero for what I think is the most important concept... the concept that is behind all of the work that I do as a writer, which is human connection and respect. We want to show people that we respect them and we want to show ourselves that we're worthy of respect. That's what we're doing here tonight." When asked about her experiences in Uganda, Dushku called upon an almost familial connection with the victims, referring to Rose, a 27-year-old woman who was abducted ...

DVD Review - The Wicker Tree (2011)
Flickering Myth - almost 5 years
The Wicker Tree, 2011. Written and Directed by Robin Hardy. Starring Graham McTavish, Jacqueline Leonardas, Brittania Nicol, Honeysuckle Weeks, Henry Garrett and Clive Russell. SYNOPSIS: Two devout Christians are sent on a mission to spread the word of God to the residents of Tressock in Scotland, where they are invited to take part in a local festival. Horror is personal. So very, very personal. It’s the best thing and the worst thing about the genre. A horror story that can speak to your darkest fears will bury its images and its message that bit deeper in your memory. By the same token, a horror story full of generic frights and shocks is quickly forgotten, doomed to live out its days in the ‘£3 or Less’ bargain bin. This is why The Wicker Man (1973) is rightly deemed a cult classic, and entirely why I can’t quite remember that one film Eliza Dushku did where rednecks murder her friends with power tools. The Wicker Tree doesn’t quite sink to Dushku depths, but it’s far f ...

I had him on the brain for sure but I hadn't called him yet, but I sort of took a leap of faith and set things up with Fox and then called Joss. We went to a four-hour lunch where I just sort of used my womanly wiles. No, we've become such good friends, kind of like brother and sister and kind of like he was my watcher, my handler from when I first moved out to L.A. when I was 17 and I was a little bit of a wild child.
