Empathy for the Walking Wounded
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Fifty years ago, I spent my summers at a sailing camp run by the Greater Providence YMCA. Having failed as a counselor-in-training, I was moved into an administrative position (running the camp's office and store). However, one thing made me stand out from other members of the top staff. Whenever one of them stood up to make an announcement to the 225 campers and staff seated in the dining hall, they were met with curious attention. Whenever I stood up to make an announcement, I was met with a thunderous chorus of "George is fat and ugly! George is gross and cheap!" The campers loved it. Realizing there was no way to stop them (and that they would all return home in a few weeks), I chose the path of least resistance. I simply got used to it. Over the decades it's become easier for me to see how we attempt to separate our society into peculiar subgroups of the general population. Some people only want to know if a person is considered Hot or Not. For years, there was no ...

Commencement exercises for Northwest Catholic High School (NWC) are held every year in the awe-inspiring Cathedral of Saint Joseph on Farmington Avenue in Hartford. The graduation is decorous and dignified, yet warm and emotional. Judge Schedules Retrial of Nicolette Sheridan's Lawsuit Against 'Desperate Housewives' Producers
North Hollywood- Toulca Lake Pat - almost 5 years
A judge today scheduled a Sept. 10 retrial in Nicollette Sheridan's wrongful termination lawsuit against the producers of "Desperate Housewives," but urged both sides to settle the case before then. "I strongly urge you to continue settlement discussions," Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Allen White told lawyers. Sheridan did not attend the hearing. Rather than go through a retrial, attorneys for Touchstone Television Productions had asked White to enter a judgment in their clients' favor in response to the lawsuit brought by the former "Desperate Housewives" cast member. The defense also asked the judge to dismiss Sheridan's claim for punitive damages. White denied both motions. Sheridan, 48, claims that her Edie Britt character was killed off the ABC series after she complained that show creator Marc Cherry smacked her on the head during a rehearsal. The actress claimed Cherry hit her while she was asking about a line that had been eliminated fr ...

More Details Hide Details Allen is perhaps best known on TV for her role as the creepy saleslady in the first-season episode of Rod Serling's original version of The Twilight Zone, entitled "The After Hours", where actress Anne Francis (playing 'Miss Marsha White') finally realizes that she is a mannequin and that her month of freedom and living among the humans is over. Allen's saleslady character (seen by no one but Marsha) is the mannequin whose turn in the outside world is up next and has already been delayed by one full day, thus explaining her slightly peeved attitude. In 1963, Allen starred with John Wayne, Dorothy Lamour and Lee Marvin in the John Ford film Donovan's Reef. She also starred in Diamond Head with Charlton Heston and Yvette Mimieux. Both movies were filmed on location in Hawaii. Allen also appeared with James Stewart in Cheyenne Autumn and won a Laurel Award in 1963 as the year's most promising film actress.
