State Dinner For Francois Hollande Has French Twist
Huffington Post - about 3 years
WASHINGTON (AP) — Caviar and cotton candy are on the menu. Bradley Cooper is on the guest list. Mary J. Blige is set to perform. Yet much of the focus for Tuesday's glitzy state dinner for French President Francois Hollande centers on the fact that he's flying solo following a very public breakup from his first lady after being caught in a tryst with another woman. Call it dinner with a French twist. The White House did its straight-faced best to keep the attention on anything but "l'affaire Hollande," preparing an outsized dinner-for-350 spread of pomp and pageantry in a giant party tent on the South Lawn. (There's no room inside the White House that can handle that many guests.) But all eyes focused on who would be seated next to President Barack Obama — in the seat traditionally reserved for the guest of honor's spouse or companion. It was still a mystery even as Hollande arrived at the White House after dusk, stepping out of his limo and onto a red carpet to greet Obama and fi ...

Polanski Gets the Retrospective Treatment
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Given the highly publicized drama of Roman Polanski's personal life, his superlative work as a filmmaker is sometimes relegated to the back burner. But, far from the tabloids, James Greenberg has written an illuminating and comprehensive film book so lavishly illustrated that the reader is immersed in over 250 full-page images from Polanski's career. Greenberg, the editor-in-chief of the DGA (Directors Guild of America) Journal, took the occasion of the famed director's 80th birthday (two months ago) to create Roman Polanski, A Retrospective. And if his demeanor at the Cannes Film Festival in May is any indication, Polanski is a spry, feisty 80, and still vital as a filmmaker. Cannes had selected his Venus in Fur, adapted from David Ives' acclaimed play. Starring Polanski's wife Emmanuelle Seigner, this entertaining adaptation is about -- and contains -- layers of performance, a "theatrical" tour-de-force similar to his previous film, Carnage. In an interview this week, Greenb ...

Roman Polanski's Shocking Words On Women
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
CANNES, France — Roman Polanski says the birth control pill has had a "masculinizing" effect on women and that the leveling of the sexes is "idiotic" The director made the comments Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival, where he came to premiere "Venus in Fur," a film adapted from the David Ives play which stars Polanski's wife and toys with the subject of gender. Polanski said the pill has "changed the place of women in our times" while talking to reporters. He further lamented that "offering flowers to a lady" has become "indecent." The 79-year-old Polanski was famously convicted of having sex with a minor in a 1977 case. He was initially indicted on six felony counts, including rape by use of drugs, child molesting and sodomy, but pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse. Polanski, whose past films include "Chinatown" and "Rosemary's Baby," fled the United States after a Los Angeles judge threatened further sanctions. He's restricted b ...

Marshall Fine: Movie Review: In the House
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Francois Ozon's In the House, opening Friday (4/19/13) in limited release, gets in your head, slowly at first, then with greater and greater speed. Initially seeming like a comedy about the vicarious voyeurism of a literature teacher at a Paris high school, it casually transforms itself into something else: a psychological thriller of sorts, in which what is real is never quite clear and never particularly important. The always-fascinating Fabrice Luchini plays Germain, unexcited at the start of another school year trying to teach literature to adolescents. He's seen correcting an assigned composition on what his students did the previous weekend; most of the papers leave him in despair because they are so inarticulate. But he comes across one that sparks his interest. It is written by a student named Claude Garcia (Ernst Umhauer), a 16-year-old who seems surprisingly confident in his writing -- and who describes how he schemed his way into a fellow student's house he ...

'A Moment Of Maximum Fabulosity'
Huffington Post - about 4 years
NEW YORK — There was a moment this past December in Paris when playwright David Ives achieved what he calls "a moment of maximum fabulosity." Film director Roman Polanski had invited him to a snazzy cafe to talk more about adapting his Tony Award-nominated play "Venus in Fur" into a movie when the pair spotted the chic "God of Carnage" playwright Yasmina Reza sitting with a distinguished-looking gentleman. After the trio exchanged greetings, the mysterious man was introduced as renowned writer Milan Kundera, whose books include "The Unbearable Lightness of Being." It was all a little surreal for Ives, who maintains a down-to-earth modesty even though he's kind of a big thing, too. "You feel like your brain is going to start on fire. You feel like burning phosphorous in company like that," he recalls of the meeting, laughing. "What do you say to Milan Kundera? `How is your crepe?'" Heady stuff indeed, but Ives, a wire-thin man who favors gin martinis as dry as h ...

Regina Weinreich: Roman Polanski: Wanted, Desired, and in His Own Words
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Known as much for his personal life as for his film career, director Roman Polanski's last scandal, for having illegal sex with a 13-year-old and his flight from justice, still polarizes the public. "I don't care," said one viewer after a private screening of a new documentary, Roman Polanski: A Film Memoir, a conversation between his longtime friend, producer Andrew Braunsberg and the filmmaker while he was under house arrest in Gstaad, Switzerland, "he still had sex with a teen." The documentary, consisting of two men talking, inspired by My Dinner with Andre, may still not sit well with viewers unnerved by the famed director's transgressions, but this memoir also goes into his stellar career and the more horrific aspects of his life, deftly melding his memories with archival footage. He was himself a child when he began his odyssey through World War II Krakow, his mother taken directly to a death camp, his father to Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria. Clips from Th ...
