Woman Who Donated Kidney to Near-Stranger Marries Him 3 Years Later (VIDEO)
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Talk about having a special connection. A woman who agreed to donate her kidney to a near-stranger has gotten far more than she bargained for: a love story. Chelsea Clair and Kyle Froelich met in 2009 at a car show in Danville, Ind. Although they barely knew each other, Froelich mentioned that he needed a new kidney, and Clair volunteered to see if she was a match, the Associated Press reports. Nationwide, close to 98,000 Americans are waiting for a new kidney transplant, according to LiveScience. And most of the transplants that do occur come from deceased donors. More rare is kidney donation by a live donor. Miraculously, Clair was a match, and she successfully donated her kidney to Froelich three years ago. But the story doesn't end there. Nearly four years after they first met, Clair and Froelich told the Indianapolis Star it's hard to pinpoint exactly when they first fell in love. What is clear, however, is that they are a perfect match. “There’s a bond that no one els ...

Amanda Seyfried Shines In 'Lovelace'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
LOS ANGELES — The lurid celebrity and sordid aftermath of the brief career of the world's first porn star is vividly, if not explicitly, etched in "Lovelace." Given all the ways a project like this could have gone wrong, the result is surprisingly good on several fronts, beginning with a shrewd structure that fosters an intelligent dual perspective on the public and private aspects of the "Deep Throat" phenomenon. Leaving behind the overly academic approach they brought to an earlier cultural and censorship landmark in "Howl" three years ago, directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman have made a real movie here. Linda Lovelace was the nom de porn bestowed upon Florida girl Linda Boreman when she starred in her one and only hardcore feature, the 1972 film that became the adult film industry's first crossover smash, launched "porno chic" and went on to gross anywhere from $100 million to $600 million on an initial expenditure of less than $50,000. Lovelace only ever collecte ...

Sophia Stuart: Women With Balls and Hot Flashes
Huffington Post - over 3 years
To paraphrase the great Mary Poppins, if you want to deliver a serious message (such as, "When it comes to breast cancer, early detection saves lives"), try a spoonful of sugar. The Hot Flashes is definitely sweet -- and pretty salty too -- with a witty script from Brad Hennig that gives Wanda Sykes and Camryn Manheim the sort of lines that make you whoop out loud. Director Susan Seidelman presides over a fast-paced comedy with surprisingly slick sporting action right up to the final buzzer and a powerful story that shows it's never too late to live your own life. The Hot Flashes is set in Texas, right in the middle of the Bible belt, where the women still have big hair, drive pick up trucks and have a Reputation To Protect. Brooke Shields plays Beth Humphrey, a woman who has just reached a certain age, and is bewildered and befogged. She is in a marriage (to a two-timing rat, played oh-so-silkily by Eric Roberts) that has fallen into the twin lazy boy loungers and frozen ...

Charlotte Robinson: Legendary Filmmakers Talk Movies and LGBT Issues (AUDIO)
Huffington Post - over 3 years
In this exclusive audio montage I talk with legendary filmmakers, gay and straight alike, at the 15th annual Provincetown International Film Festival press luncheon. First, cinematographer Ed Lachman (Far From Heaven, Erin Brockovich, Desperately Seeking Susan) talks about his films, receiving the Faith Hubley Career Achievement Award at the PIFF this year and his spin on LGBT issues. Then director John Waters (Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, Serial Mom) shares intimate film stories, especially about Divine, and hopefully I'll talk to him again when his new book, Car Sick, is published. John has been instrumental with the PIFF since its start and was the first recipient of the Filmmaker on the Edge Award, in 1999. Then legendary director Brian De Palma (Carrie, Dress to Kill, Scarface) talks about his new film, Passion, starring Rachel McAdams, and his belief that the LGBT community should have the same rights as any American citizen. Updated 11:52 am, Tuesday, April 16, 2013 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A man who was sentenced to death for his role in the killing of a prison guard during a bungled escape from a South Dakota prison will not face a new sentencing hearing before a jury, a circuit judge ruled Tuesday. The state Supreme Court overturned that sentence this year, ruling that Circuit Judge Brad Zell had improperly considered Berget's comments to a psychiatrist that he deserved the death penalty for taking Johnson's life and destroying his family. Berget was already serving life sentences for attempted murder and kidnapping when he tried to escape from the State Penitentiary with Eric Robert, who was serving 80 years for a kidnapping conviction. Scott Alexander Hess: Can a Hot Book Trailer Spell Success?
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
As I planned for the release of my debut novel, Diary of a Sex Addict in 2012, I knew nothing about the burgeoning new field of professional book trailers. I just wanted to create something visual to snag some social media attention. I had once optioned a film script and had a talented filmmaker friend who agreed to help so we decided to give it a go. I wrote a script and we brought on a fitness model and an adult film actor (there's a gritty sex scene) to star in the flick. In the first year after posting the short of Diary of a Sex Addict, I was thrilled to see the film got 10,000 hits on Vimeo and resulted in some nice media coverage for the novel. Later that year at a reading event, I ran into Joshua Kornreich, an author who told me about his novel and how he used a professional trailer to promote The Boy Who Killed Caterpillars. He spoke highly of Red14 Films a Los Angeles based company that creates "short art house films" that serve as a "cinematic back-cove ...

Charles Karel Bouley: Tyson KO's Box Office at Pantages
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
One individual event or thing usually doesn't cause a disaster: it usually is a confluence of events that go wrong to bring about a disastrous event. Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth is proof of that. In the ring, Tyson was an undisputed champion, holding the record as the youngest boxer to win the WBC, WBA and IBF world heavyweight titles and was the first to hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles simultaneously and has been inducted in to the Boxing Hall of Fame. His life outside the ring, however, has been somewhat of a train wreck. Three marriages, seven children, a very public and messy divorce, multiple arrests, addictions; his very public life has often amplified some very personal failings. In Undisputed Truth Tyson gets to tell his side of the story in a one man show that is funny, poignant, sad and engaging. Is it the truth? Well, we are all the heroes of our own story; seeing life through the filter of being at the center of the its universe. Akira Kurosawa's 1950s film R ...

Is Eric Roberts The Most Honest Man In Hollywood?
