Carla Escoda: Diablo Ballet Shines In a Work of Mad Genius
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Hiromi Yamazaki and Robert Dekkers in Trey McIntyre's 'Blue Boy.' (Photo: Aris Bernales, courtesy Diablo Ballet.) Diablo Ballet kicked off its latest program with all-American live-wire choreographer Trey McIntyre's homage to the 18th century Gainsborough portrait, The Blue Boy. Not your typical McIntyre knock-your-socks-off athletic enterprise but a delicate, neoclassical pas de trois set to the rhapsodic second movement of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 from the era of Gainsborough. Diablo Ballet's Robert Dekkers makes a striking and graceful Blue Boy, well aware of his privileged station in life but utterly charming. He flings his arms open as if to embrace the audience, and is sweetly attentive to his two muses, danced assuredly by Hiromi Yamazaki and Mayo Sugano. Rapid changes in body facings, twists on classical port de bras and silhouettes, and the elegant costumes by Liz Prince remind us that this is a contemporary, not a period piece: Yamazaki in a glamorous swirl ...

Carla Escoda: Diablo Ballet's Flight of the Dodo (The Web Ballet) Takes Wing
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Robert Dekkers with David Fonnegra. (Photo: Erika Johnson, courtesy Diablo Ballet.) A 10-year-old girl wrote in to Diablo Ballet asking for a dance set in "the safari. The boys will be animals and the girls will be explorers." Via Twitter came other suggestions: • "The story of the Dodo Bird" • "Feel of piece: Deliberately ironic" • "Setting: insane asylum" • "Initiate movement from shoulder blades" And so on. Choreographer Robert Dekkers, who dances with Diablo and has made dances for several companies including his own acclaimed Post:Ballet, is used to creating ballets strictly from his own imagination, often from his preoccupation with physics and the parallels between scientific phenomena and human interaction. Cryptic outbursts from total strangers generally don't serve as his inspiration. But he is now on a mission, a ballet-by-social-media mission. Another bunch of total strangers had voted for him to work with Vivaldi's Double Cello Concerto in ...

The Basic Human Right That Disabled People Still Have To Fight For
Huffington Post - about 4 years
-- Millions of Americans with disabilities have gained innumerable rights and opportunities since Congress passed landmark legislation on their behalf in 1990. And yet advocates say barriers and bias still abound when it comes to one basic human right: To be a parent. A Kansas City, Mo., couple had their daughter taken into custody by the state two days after her birth because both parents were blind. A Chicago mother, because she is quadriplegic, endured an 18-month legal battle to keep custody of her young son. A California woman paid an advance fee to an adoption agency, then was told she might be unfit to adopt because she has cerebral palsy. Such cases are found nationwide, according to a new report by the National Council on Disability, an independent federal agency. The 445-page document is viewed by the disability-rights community as by far the most comprehensive ever on the topic – simultaneously an encyclopedic accounting of the status quo and an emotio ...

Daniel Maidman: THE HUNGER ARTIST: Living Two Years Without Money
Huffington Post - over 4 years
MEA CULPA There is a factor affecting everything I have done in the past couple of years, which I didn't want to share with you until it was finished, and about the sharing of which I retain some doubts even now. But since the question of art is as much a moral question as anything else, I think it is best for me as an artist, and hopefully for you as an artist or art lover as well, if I say whatever I have to say with the largest amount of honesty I can muster. I committed a crime. When I was very young, and very stupid, I got an independent subcontractor job, so I didn't file or pay taxes from 1997 through 2008. I used the money to shoot short films and draw and paint. A friend whom I see far too rarely, upon hearing of this, described me and my crime as "world's smartest man makes world's stupidest mistake." The IRS, whose job it is to notice this sort of stunt, does eventually catch up with you, and if you've made them work at it, they are not very happy when they ...
