Stranded in Cuba
Huffington Post - about 1 month
This time it is Cuba. Last week was Nicaragua. It's 9 am, and we've just arrived in the airport of the last leg of our summer travels through Central America. We enthusiastically exited the non-air-conditioned international terminal, schlepping our heavy backpacks with sweat dripping down our brows. The backpackers we had conversed with in Guatemala had specifically advised us against bringing cash, but rather to take out money from the ATM at the airport to avoid hefty conversion fees. Unbeknownst at the time, all the people we had spoken to were European and thus unaware of one minor detail, that Cuba does not accept US credit or debit cards. With only $25 USD cash left from our travels, we had no idea what we were in for. Heading straight for the ATM, we thought our plan was simple; we would take out enough cash to last us for the next four days. I inserted my card into the ATM, and received an error message. So we tried again. And again. And again. We tried this with ever ...

This Video Goes Out To Everyone Stressing About Thanksgiving This Year
Huffington Post - 3 months
When political disputes erupted at Thanksgiving meals last year, Adele’s “Hello” came through to cut the tension. This year, the holiday-loving Holderness family is offering another musical antidote with their latest parody video, “Welcome to My Couch.” A rewrite of Flo Rida’s “My House,” the song provides some ideas for how to deal with heated arguments at Thanksgiving, like “open up the nay nay,” watch football and segue into alternative discussion topics like Brangelina, the return of “24” or the new iPhone 7.  “Welcome to my couch, drink away your feelings, cheer at all the touchdowns and suppress your anger!” dad Penn sings. “Welcome to my couch. I’ll be watching football. I prefer concussions over these discussions.” Ultimately, the Holderni have a message of unity: “Let’s love each other.” type=type=RelatedArticlesblockTitle=For more holiday videos... + articlesList=564dde3ce4b031745ceff56a,5651e58ce4b0d4093a581c00,56705ba9e4b0fccee17015aa -- This f ...

Huffington Post - 5 months
Photo provided by El Museo del Barrio, Photograph by Sofia Reeser del Rio Not much has changed since 1979. Well, at least not when it comes to the creative and stylish social circles of New York City, according to Paul Caranicas. "I feel like this is the same as that party back then. I don't know how much people have changed since then but they act the same," said Caranicas during the event, Antonio Lopez: A Photo Cocktail Party. "We are in a very free crowd so I think free people are always free and uptight people are always uptight. But I don't hang around them so I don't know." During New York Fashion Week (NYFW), Caranicas, who runs the estate of fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez and his creative collaborator Juan Ramos, helped organize the homage to the 1979 party. When it was originally held at NYC's Robert Freidus Gallery the festive celebration included partygoers such as model Pat Cleveland and fashion designer Betsey Johnson posing before a large-format Polaroid came ...

Headline Planet - almost 2 years
Over the past several weeks, Natalie La Rose’s breakthrough “Somebody (featuring Jeremih)” has steadily ranked as one of the greatest gainers at pop radio. This week, “Somebody” is not simply one of pop’s greatest airplay gainers. It is the greatest gainer. Up two places to a new peak of #4 on the Mediabase pop airplay chart, “Somebody” received 13,640 spins during the April 5-11 tracking week. That spin total bests last week’s count by a whopping 2,045 plays. No other pop song enjoyed a gain of that significance. Some did, however, enjoy very sizable gains. Kings Can't Contain Hot Warriors
Huffington Post Sports - about 2 years
Photo by Tony Harvey Another disappointing night and the frustration continues to mount. After a strong start, the Kings had no answer to the best team in the Western Conference. The Warriors swept the season series for the second straight season after they beat Sacramento 121-96 last night at Sleep Train Arena. The Kings spent majority of the game digging themselves out of a hole dug too deep. They had a brief comeback in the third when they trimmed the lead to 12 after being down by 21. But Stephen Curry hit a 3-point shot to end the period. After that, the Warriors sailed in the fourth. "Basically, their bench came in and did a great job," DeMarcus Cousins said. "They pushed the game ahead and made it tough for our whole team." Sacramento was out rebounded and outscored by Golden State's bench 61-12. The Warriors are 22-0 when their bench outscores the opponent's bench. The Kings were helpless against a full squad and a team that shared the ball to combine for 3 ...

Dance With My Boy
Huffington Post - about 3 years
William is my hockey player. He's 13 and is navigating the awkward, tenuous web that hangs between childhood and manhood. His face still looks like it has for the past five years or so: soft chin, wide eyes, smooth cheeks. But now there are bushier eyebrows, a smattering of zits, a broadening nose. My boy is changing and since he's my youngest one, it's all the more bittersweet to observe. Having seen his two older brothers leave their baby faces behind, I'm prepared for what lies ahead... but I'm also acutely aware of what is slipping through my fingers. Raising kids has proven to be a constant tug-of-war between wanting to be their mommy forever and aching to see what kind of adults these people will become. Because of the hockey, William and I spend a lot of time in the car together. At least five days a week he has a practice or a game, sometimes close to home and other times not so close. His father, my ex-husband, helps with the driving but there are still several nights a week ...

Kanye West Commissions A 'Warhol' For Kim Kardashian
Huffington Post - about 3 years
Kanye West is really rich from selling plain white t-shirts for $120, but he's still not rich enough to bring Andy Warhol back from the dead. He is, however, definitely rich enough to ask Monica Warhol to paint a picture of the woman he is "Bound 2" ... Kim Kardashian. Monica is a mother of six who lives in Arizona and she's Andy's cousin, so that's basically the same thing. She also makes silk-screen works from photographs, even though she never met Andy and "never owned a book about him until about a year ago." But that doesn't matter, guys! This Arizona cousin Warhol is still really into painting Kardashian. She told the New York Daily News that Andy would have loved to paint the reality star, because "she’s an icon, she's famous for nothing." So, even though Kardashian is not famous for anything (like, maybe, being Andy Warhol's cousin), Monica is going to accept the job. She's also done two portraits of Flo Rida (featured briefly in the video for "How I Feel") and one portra ...

Roc Nation's Bridget Kelly on Her Life and Career
Huffington Post - about 3 years
(Ring, Ring) "Bridget, its Hova. Gonna need you in London tonight." Opportunity knocks when it's ready and presents itself, sometimes in the rarest forms. Bridget Kelly's road to the top might of had its challenges, but she was prepared to take the world head on while flashing her signature, infectious smile. My initial meeting with this striking songstress was just a mere glimpse of who she is and has set out to be. Born in New York City, Bridget was raised in Chelsea's diverse neighborhood, never identifying herself as a singer. Growing up, music always filled the air, but was not genetically set for her. Her mom and dad, who were never affiliated with the entertainment industry, accidentally stumbled upon her rare talent during a family road trip. Her rendition to Lauryn Hill's 1995 remake of "Killing Me Softly" made it clear that her 10-year-old voice was ready for a bigger stage than their back seat. Her gift was a top priority: "My dad signed me up for our local church choi ...
