Over The Top. Under the Bun.
Huffington Post - almost 2 years
In preparation for my Nathan's hot dog qualifier at the Plant City, Florida strawberry festival, I have been listening to a lot of Frank Stallone music. Not just the hits from the 1980s films "Staying Alive" and "Over the Top" but his new stuff like "Carry On" from the film "Reach Me." With lyrics like, "It's got to have feelings. It's got to have meaning. Because I need a reason to carry on," Frank could just as well be singing about eating hot dogs competitively for 10 minutes. I am a film junkie, but "Saturday Night Fever" is so much better than, "Staying Alive" and in the arm pressing 80s genre I much prefer "PK and the Kid" over "Over the Top." Granted, I was one of the few individuals who thought that the world needed two competitive arm-wrestling movies and time has not dampened my opinion. My sport, Major League Eating, is known for strength in the dunking forearm versus the bulging biceps from professional arm-wrestling. In subculture sports -- beer pong, cup-stacking, and ...

Martin Newman: Jack Reacher Is Kicking Ass at the Box Office but What Are the Best Ever Movie Punch-Ups?
Huffington Post - about 4 years
In new action blockbuster Jack Reacher, Tom Cruise is surrounded by thugs when he gives a calm, chilling appraisal of their situation: "Remember, you wanted this". What comes next is a predictable staple of just about every Hollywood action flick made today. And in a market crowded with such franchises, making these fight scenes bigger and badder than anything before is a continual challenge for writers and choreographers. But what really makes a memorable movie punch-up? The James Bond films set a standard for the tough-guy butt-kicker and since the advent of Hong Kong martial arts movies the model has been refined and reiterated over the decades. New film franchises like the Die Hard, Mission Impossible, Matrix, Batman and Bourne series have kept the box office ticking over. But they have also become dangerously generic. Whether it's Daniel Craig or Matt Damon you always know the brutal outcome. They are heroes who don't break a sweat enroute to battering ...

LISTEN: L. Ron Hubbard's Creepy Music
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Scientology has a little-known musical soundtrack. The religion's founder, L. Ron Hubbard, was a composer, singer and even had a band. John Travolta, Frank Stallone and others sang with the "Master" and can be heard below. In the early 1980's, Hubbard went into hiding allegedly to avoid tax agents probing allegations that he was skimming church funds, the Los Angeles Times reports. While in hiding, he wrote science fiction novels and less-known soundtracks to those novels. He also wrote essays analyzing musical genres, including country, flamenco, "oriental" and rock; you can read them here. Listen to Hubbard's album tracks--and see amusing album artwork--in the slideshow below of videos tracked down by Buzzfeed. Note the horse noises in the first track. Enjoy.

Sage Stallone death: Large bottles of pills, time of death probed
LATimes - over 4 years
Officials probing the death of Sage Stallone are trying to determine whether large bottles of prescription pain pills found at his home are connected to his sudden death at age 36. Law enforcement sources said Wednesday that investigators are also trying to pinpoint exactly when he died. Officials are hoping to track the prescription back to the doctors and pharmacies involved. This is a common investigative path in such a case, and officials did the same thing after musical artists Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson died. It's unknown whether the pills played any role in Stallone's death but the amount of pill bottles found at Stallone's Studio City home was enough to warrant investigation. Some of the containers were empty, the sources said. An autopsy was performed on the 36-year-old on Sunday but no details have been released about its findings. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office is now awaiting results of toxicology tests, which is common in such cases. The Los A ...

Sylvester Stallone: Loss of son Sage 'will be felt forever'
LATimes - over 4 years
Sylvester Stallone is asking the public and media not to speculate about his son's sudden death last week until all the facts are in. Sage Stallone, who was found dead at his Studio City home on Friday, was 36. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office performed an autopsy over the weekend, but authorities said the results of toxicology tests won't be known for up to two months. LAPD detectives are assisting in the case. Ed Winter of the coroner's office told reporters outside Stallone's home Friday night that some prescription drugs and other items were recovered from the home, but he stressed that officials said they don't know whether they played any role in his death. It's common for the coroner to examine prescription drugs when trying to determine a cause of death. It is also common for police detectives to assist in such a death probe. Officials have stressed there is no evidence of foul play. Sage Stallone's attorney said his death came as a total shock. "Sage didn't ...

Stallone wrote and performed "Far from Over" for the 1983 film Staying Alive.
More Details Hide Details The song was released mid April 1983. The song peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his only major pop hit. The song was nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Original Song from a Motion Picture, and the album for a Grammy Award for Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special. A self-titled album soon followed from RSO, in the style of 1980s pop. The album featured a slightly remixed (and abridged) version of "Far from Over" as well as the song, "Darlin'", which peaked at #81 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1984. In the mid-1990s, Stallone became the subject of a running gag on Saturday Night Live, during its "Weekend Update" segment hosted by Norm Macdonald. During each episode, Macdonald (at some point in the mock-newscast) would read a legitimate news headline, then would propose a question asking the cause of that news, which would always be answered by, "You guessed it—Frank Stallone." At that moment, a publicity photo of Stallone would appear on the screen behind Macdonald. Example:
